First off, this kind of volatility has become the rule rather than the exception. But if you're looking for a reason why there was selling today, it wasn't the crude oil production report released by the US Energy Information Administration. Not only was US crude oil production flat from the previous week, but crude inventories declined at their fastest pace since the week of August 25. There was also a reported decline in Russian oil exports as well as North Sea Forties output.

What may have offset all of that was waning concerns about oil flow disruptions in the Red Sea, as Maersk's decision to resume shipping there has apparently emboldened oil shippers to resume as well. That's of course something that could change at the drop of a hat--which is one reason why trying to make sense out of daily moves in prices is basically problematic.
