This isn't just Maddon. All managers do this in the postseason.
Jansen closed out like a 4-5 run lead in the DS, I believe.
Ben

How can we automatically assume he's unavailable tomorrow?
Dave Cameron
11:09
It isn't about availability. It's about quantity.
The Walking Man

Tito used Allen with a 6 run lead as well
Mike Oxawoppa
11:09
Jansen was with a 6-run lead!
Bryn

Even Miller has thrown some non high leverage innings with a lead.

Maddon is in the game. Not watching the game on TV or on the internet. He is not playing to 'not-lose' game 6. Im sure the guy is nervous as hell, and doesn't want anything getting out of hand and wanted to quash any possible chance of a loss.
Dave Cameron

That's dumb.
You have to win two games to win the series. You make decisions based on winning two games, not one.

Can we add Dave Cameron onto Undisputed. All he says is "That's Dumb" apparently.

I love it when Dave gets fired up!
Dave Cameron
11:11
There are plenty of things where reasonable people can take both sides in baseball. Almost everything. Not this.
11:12
Baez.
I wish he could hit.
Eno Sarris
11:12
They might have some defensive problems in the outfield as they age but they've got some plus infield defense... and Almora I guess.

Baez is so good that didnt even look impressive

11:13
shat would you think if they pulled chapman here?
Dave Cameron
11:13
It would make a bad situation less bad.
But he won't.
Chapman considers himself a closer. Maddon will let him close.

11:14
Does Baez realistically learn to hit, Dave?
Dave Cameron
11:14
Anything is possible. Ben Zobrist wasn't Ben Zobrist until he was like 26. But current version Baez? No.
Matt
11:15
Do we even have provable evidence that Chapman will be worse tmrw if he goes out and has an easy 9th inning?
Dave Cameron
11:15
Again, it isn't about better/worse, or about available/unavailable; it's about quantity.
No way Maddon asks Chapman to throw 40+ two days in a row.
So you could have gotten this tomorrow.
Now you get ~20 pitches, maybe.

I sense an article coming tomorrow on the Chapman decision...
Dave Cameron
11:16
I'm already working on it. It will be up tonight.
Nick
11:17
how long does an article normally take to write?
Dave Cameron
11:18
Once I have the idea and the data, I can knock it out in an ~1 hour.
Eno Sarris
11:18
Yeah it's the first part that sometimes takes for-f'in-ever.
Dave Cameron
11:18
I'll have to talk to the wife when I get home though, so this will take longer.
Eno Sarris
11:18
Or at least for me. I'm not the greatest at data.
Eric Weinstein
11:19
How does theCubs front office not call up the dugout and say this is crazy - get someone other than Chapman in there?
Eno Sarris
11:19
And the interview ones take much longer with travel, research, transcribing.
Can we pull Chapman now?
