Spin (RPM) and ride (vertical movement) are also important, yes. I try to look at all three. Duffy, as an example, has tremendous ride. I learned from him to look at movement rather than per-pitch results, because once Duffy started getting ahead in counts, he was able to throw that great moving stuff in counts where batters had to swing.

Is pitch movement stabilized within the first game?
Eno Sarris
4:31
I'd guess you want three. Velocity is stable in two to three games.
4:32
yo was that a 94 mph nasty as splitter from Gausman or what

Eno, we were talking earlier today about Thor and how his slider might be more of a cutter. The way he appears to grip it suggests more cutter to me. thoughts?
Eno Sarris
They throw a cutter/slider hybrid in New York. Keep it in your fingers, snap it a tiny bit at end, but otherwise throw a fastball.

First Cesar, now Freddy goes yard of Feldman!
Eno Sarris
4:35
Freddy is like the one-man test. Is he hitting 20? Yah ball still juiced.

Gausman v Bautista
Eno Sarris

thought that first one was a strike.

Any suggestions for how to improve pitch recognition as a fan watching on TV?
Travis Sawchik
4:36
More straight-away CF camera angles would help
Eno Sarris
4:36
Watch with gameday open, too. Velocity helps. Establish the fastball by velocity. Then breaking balls generally cut towards the glove hand, changeups fade towards the throwing hand.
Shirtless George Brett

Not an encouraging AB for the Buxton Breakout Bandwagon.
Travis Sawchik
4:37
It wasn't

benintendi facing rivero can't be fun
Travis Sawchik
4:37
Rivero would look really good in the Nats' pen

My wife and I (both Mets fans) tried to watch the Yankee game on YES yesterday since, you know, first game of the season. Egads, if there's ever been anything that makes me glad to be a Mets fan, it's how much more watchable their broadcast is. The glacial pace of yesterday's game didn't help but we tapped out after 2 innings.
Travis Sawchik
4:40
This is not a comment on YES broadcast, but too many clubs seem to take the approach that it's OK to dumb-down broadcast. Mets' team/V.Scully can make even a poor game worth watching, because they're interesting and broadcast is full of detail .... I'd love to see smarter/more interesting broadcast teams. They add value

Duffy has enough plus pitches to succeed. Why was everyone freaking out about his velocity in March?
Travis Sawchik
4:41
Duffy, perhaps, took a safer approach to WBC than Smyly
Eno Sarris
4:42
It's a big drop but he was sort of in the pen last year and he's still above average. I shrug I guess.

Milwaukee defense blowing the game

Davies can't be Hendricks with them behind him.

I was working on a community article about Bethancourt and hybrid pitchers/hitters throughout history. Imagine my dissapointment when i just checked the FG home page haha.
Eno Sarris
4:43
sorry dude

Following on the mlb website - how does one "pop out sharply?" Apparently that's what Sano just did.
Travis Sawchik
4:43
117 EV, 88-degree launch

David Freese isn't taking awful swings. He's just playing excellent cricket.
Travis Sawchik
4:44
Freese had a 3:1 GB:FB ratio last year but a 20 HR/FB% but he seems resistant to adopt a new swing plane
Jordan
4:45
I'd love if Arod did broadcasting
Travis Sawchik
4:45
ARod would probably be great. Everyone says he has an impressive volume of knowledge

Last year Duffy started striking people out, but he also generated, by a mile, a career low on IFFBs. Which is more likely to regress: the IFFB rate or the K rate?
Eno Sarris
4:46
Went to sinker over rising 4s so it's a pitch mix question.
bosoxforlife
4:47
Those numbers cannot be real. It is impossible to generate that EY with such poor contact.
Travis Sawchik
4:47
I kid, I kid .... but that would be a loud pop-up
Chris
4:47
Travis, what would his exit velocity need to be to get a homerun with an 88 degree launch?
Travis Sawchik
4:47
Mach 2?
I don't know. It would be insane though
