I will openly admit that I am rooting for Gary Sanchez

The best thing about MLB-TV is the radio overlay. I enjoy Tom Hamilton so much. Bob Uecker, Pat Hughes, Denny Matthews and many more are such a part of the game.

the microscope that Sanchez is under from the NY beats is just insufferable

With this weather, I wouldn't read much into results, good or bad, from today's game in Detroit.
AvatarJay Jaffe
1:52
the number of otherwise respected reporters who have talked themselves into Austin Romine or Kyle Higashioka as a plausible everyday catcher is something Statcast would lose track of
Kevin Goldstein

You have a stolen base yet Jay? Robbie Grossman just swiped one.

Tigers keep running. SB for Grossman. Love the aggressive approach.

no steals here. 2-1 Yankees through 2

Anybody else's MLB.tv app acting super glitchy? I keep getting Network Error messages.

I'm rolling just fine on two devices, but I have great internet here in DeKalb.

What do you make of the Jake Lamb signing in Atlanta? Think he's good enough to make the Braves give up on the Austin Riley experience before the end of the year?
AvatarJay Jaffe
1:56
Uh, Lamb is a White Sock now. Lost out to Pablo Sandoval for the backup 3B job and signed a major league deal reuniting him with La Russa. Wrote about it in the context of Eloy Jiménez's injury https://blogs.fangraphs.com/the-white-sox-cant-easily-replace-eloy-jim...

Bieber gets out of a second inning that could have been worse. Tigers up 3-0 after two.

Was Gary or Miggy first?

There's something wrong with a Brewers fan drinking vodka.  Especially five before lunch.

Clearly you've never seen the tailgate scene in Milwaukee.

So let's say the Padres win 100, the Dodgers 98, the Braves 92 and on down.  Is it the most stupid thing that the Padres would then have to play the Dodgers (if the Dodgers win the wild card game) in the first round of the playoffs? It makes no sense not to reseed this part of the playoffs.
AvatarJay Jaffe

I like that the current structure places a premium on winning the division. It's not perfect but should lead to even very good teams trying to improve if it means the difference between one guaranteed game and at least a best-of-five.
AvatarJay Jaffe

I don't think the Padres make all of the moves they did if they only care about claiming a Wild Card spot

This is likely the last year of the current playoff structure, anyway....

Another first of the season. I just said "turn that!" on an infield ground ball with a runner on first. I will say it 1,492 more times this seasson.

What do you make of the Dodgers not fully commiting to Will Smith?
AvatarJay Jaffe
2:01
I think they're pretty committed — Ruiz is in the minors, after all, and Barnes is the backup — but Smith's defense is at least somewhat questionable; he was IIRC tied for last in our framing runs metric during the short season

That was a pretty damn nasty inning for Cole...

Do either of you gentleman have developed any habits of scorekeeping games you watch on TV? What are some of your preferences? Any suggestion from someone who is picking it after learning the trait from my grandfather as a youngster?

Barnes is Kershaw's personal catcher; that's why he's not in the lineup today.
Kevin Goldstein

I'm not doing it today, but I do have a scorebook that I use when I feel the impulse to do so. I love looking at other people's scorebook to see how they are doing it wrong, as everyone has their quirks.

I don't keep score at home but I do when I go to the ballpark unless I'm taking my kid
very nice charging play by Bichette at shortstop to get Frazier on a slowish grounder
