Of all the players I expected to have their names botched by national announcers, Tyler Glasnow was not on the list.

Thanks for doing this chat. Lets start by simply saying thank you to the entire Fangraphs staff for once again providing the perfect sauce complement to the meal of baseball. Food metaphors are still cool, right?

We'll take the compliment, thank you!. Not every day is equally good, ahem, but it is both a privilege and a pleasure to write about baseball for a passionate group of readers like our audience.

Anyone else feel like this isn't the "real" playoffs? I'm excited for these games, but it doesn't feel as hype to me as the DS and beyond.
AvatarDan Szymborski
3:28
It's just that we have so many teams now! So if you grew up with a lot fewer teams it still feels weird
AvatarJay Jaffe
3:28
This isn't nearly as fun as the one-and-done Wild Card Games.
AvatarDan Szymborski
3:28
Especially since it took away our game 163s!
AvatarJay Jaffe
3:29
indeed. Pouring one out for Rangers-Astros as well as last year's Mets-Braves
3:30
And the Rangers are on the board first, as Jung drives in Lowe with a sacrifice fly.
AvatarDan Szymborski
3:30
When they first made that announcement, my first thought was literally "damn, they're totally killing Jay's yearly piece."
AvatarJay Jaffe
3:30
Team Entropy had been a big part of my annual cycle! They're taking bread off my table!
AvatarDan Szymborski
3:31
I've still heard Jung pronounced with a hard J way more often from random people than it should be at this point
3:33
If they want to add yet more playoff rounds to the mix, instead of adding two even worse teams, they should make the WS champion play another series against last year's winner! And that team gets all those original players back!
Ben Schneider
3:33
The Orioles should definitely break out some 1966 throwbacks to honor Brooks and bring in some good WS vibes
Dan Evans
3:34
Thanks for doing this! Love your site! Which Wild Card series is most likely to see an upset?

As a Blue Jays fan, I certainly don’t feel like my team was in the playoffs last year, and I probably won’t this year unless they beat Minnesota
AvatarDan Szymborski
3:34
I think that's probably fair
If you don't beat the Twins are you really in the playoffs? They've become the Glass Joe of the playoffs
3:35
You gotta get to at LEAST Von Kaiser or you're not in the playoffs

I still don’t understand why people disliked the 1 game wild card. I treat WC like the first four in NCAA, the winner is a playoff team, the loser is basically forgotten. If you want to be guaranteed a playoff spot, win more games! There should be a reward for the best teams.
AvatarDan Szymborski
3:35
I like that it's a severe punishment for teams that don't win the division!

Jay! You're watching too fast for my feed.

Ha, and my office feed is a pitch or two behind my living room feed (which my wife is watching). I thought I was safely on delay when I typed that.

Why is Texas batting Robbie Grossman third? I need to say something about it on the broadcast and don’t know what
AvatarDan Szymborski

I like them better as the Devil Rays
or if you just keep one word, keep devils

One way to shorten the wild card round and have the DS start on a Friday would be to adopt the KBO process whereby the higher seed hosts for two games, but the lower seed has to win both games to advance.  Thoughts?
AvatarJay Jaffe
3:38
I like that idea a lot more than the current arrangement. In fact, our close viewing of the 2020 KBO season led contributor Brendan Gawlowski to write about applying that to MLB https://blogs.fangraphs.com/lets-rethink-the-playoffs/

I dislike that under the current system the second best division winner often has an easier path, with the #4 and #5 teams both being better than the #3. The five team system was brilliant.
AvatarJay Jaffe
3:40
Agreed. Loved that the Wild Card teams were penalized and the division winners rewarded, with nobody getting too much extra rest (rust?) between the end of the regular season and the start of the playoffs.

I sort of like that the new system will punish the central divisions for only trying so much.
AvatarDan Szymborski
3:40
that is a nice feature

Announcers said Lowe has the most power by a lot on the Rangers. That seems a bold choice. Lowe's a good player with pop in his bat and all but...

3:42
What's with all the bunts?
Derek
3:42
Okay Jordan Montgomery!

To be fair, the announcers said Bochy said Lowe has the most power on the team
Dan

Dan if this years winner played last year's winner what if there were the same team?
AvatarJay Jaffe

Noted Game 1 Starter Jordan Montgomery with a great play to catch a popped-up bunt
