I think that white people did what they did because they wanted to feel that they are in control, or to feel that they are better than others.
Dominick
1:26
they should treat them differently

Great discussion you all. So proud of you.

David C.  people dont respond well to change sometimes...and some people thought that giving black ppeople the same rights could also take away their own freedoms and rights
Brandt H
1:25
My thoughts on what David C had to say is when people see something different they react either in a good way or bad way. I feel that white people looked at black people the bad way therefore creating a bias against them.

We do that all the time--so I agree Alexis

Gauge does have a good point, and so does Cash.
Alexis Starling
1:24
They thought that they should probably treat them differently because they looked different from them.
AvatarMichelle Johnson
Confidence--was that important?
1:24
Me too Troy.
Troy Somers
1:24
I agree with Gauge, many people would probably feel the same.
AvatarMichelle Johnson
1:24
Me too David C. Thoughts everone?
DavidC
1:23
and what I've thought about is why did the white people choose to treat black people in the bad way
Brandt H

You don't have to have many experiences to grow character. If you were to be taught certain character traits you could be shaped into who you are. However it is not the best way to become a certain person.

Interesting Mrs. T and Brandt---what do you mean Brandt?
Brandt H
1:22
Not necessarily.
Ms. T.
1:22
Brandt so...if you don't have many life experiences that are meaningful does that mean you dont have much character either?
AvatarMichelle Johnson
1:22
David--great point--color was used a visual for smart or not. But it wasn't truly intelligence it was truly just a chance to become educated.
Alexis Starling
1:22
The goal would be to learn so that you have a good education. You don't just need intelligence and character to get a good education
DavidC
1:22
what i thought that he spoke the speech to to paint a picture for the kids that heard the speech and in the future they could speak to people who were continuing racism
Jeb M
1:21
Agreed with Troy
David Torres
1:21
i mean they think they was not smart because of there color
AvatarMichelle Johnson
1:21
Two VERY good definitions of character!
Troy Somers
1:20
Character is the aspects that make up a persons personality based on experiences.
cool 1
Brandt H
1:20
Character is experience based off of different events in your lifetime and how they shape you.
AvatarMichelle Johnson
1:20
Brandt--that is so true imo.
Brandt H
1:20
No because it involves much more than jus those two to grow. You need experience to go into character, and you need mentors to go into intelligence.
David Torres
1:20
i agree with emily they just think they are smart
Jeb M
1:20
Yes, the quote gives a good representation.
AvatarMichelle Johnson
1:20
What is character?
1:19
What is the goal then Alexis?
Alexis Starling
1:19
Intelligence is good but it's not the goal of education but you have to learn to get true education
Troy Somers
1:19
I feel that this quote is accurate.
AvatarMichelle Johnson
1:18
Intelligence plus character--that is the goal of true education.  Do you agree?
Ms. T.

The metaphors give a visual to help his case
AvatarMichelle Johnson
1:17
They do add a visual component Troy--good.

I think the metaphors make Dr. King's speech much more powerful, and provide more visual aspects to the speech.
DavidC
1:17
you should all people the same
AvatarMichelle Johnson
1:17
Agree Alexis and Brandt
Brandt H
1:16
The metaphors definitely add meaning to the speech especially since MLK is trying to get people to feel emotion.
