Hi Will, at what point to students get their credentials for logins and able to register for classes for 2019 and have more info as to being able to talk to people in their department to start planning their academic cirriculum? Is it after an acceptance has been submitted with the form?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:34
Alex, you should get the information, a Penn Key and Login info, usually 24-48 hours after submitting your decision form. However, you can reach out to the specific dept that admitted you before that time, if you have specific questions that you'd like answers to before deciding whether or not you're going to attend Penn Engineering.

Will,I noticed that the number of students who study for material science mse is very small compared to other program,is it because this department in Upenn has a smaller scale?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:34
HH, that is one of the primary reasons, yes.
10:36
However, it doesn't stop the Materials Science program from doing some pretty amazing things! You can read about it on our blog: https://medium.com/penn-engineering
HH
10:36
But this department still has a very high rank in America!

And yes, it DOES have a very high rank.

Hello Will, I got into MSE Materials Science. When is the optiongiven  to choose between thesis and non-thesis?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:38
Harshit, it is usually something that the individual student decides at either the end of their first year or beginning of their second.
Liad

I've been admitted to the MSE in Systems Engineering. Is there anywhere we can see statistics regarding post program career placement? Like what percentage of graduates got a job right away, how much do they earn on average?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:38
Liad, yes there is - https://www.vpul.upenn.edu/careerservices/surveys.php#GradStudent; scroll down to see all of the Engineering survey results.
Sasi
10:39
Hey Will, could you provide the acceptance rate and class size foe the BioEngineering program?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:40
Sasi, sure thing! We accepted 36% of BE MSE applicants and 24 started the program this past fall.
HH
10:40
If I want to switch to PhD before graduation, could you tell me how does that work please.
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:41
HH, you would have to formally apply to the PhD program. We don't have internal "transfers," for our PhD programs.
Harshit
10:41
I read international students have to take atleast 3 course units per semester. So to complete the degree, you have to take 10 courses. Can they take courses in combinations of 4-4-2 or does it have to be 3-4-3 only?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:41
Harshit, no, you can do a reduced course load for one semester, so many will do a 3-3-3-1 or 3-3-1-3, depending on job/research/life
Sasi
10:42
Is it possible for BE masters students to do research with Penn medicine or CHOP?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:42
Sasi, it is possible - Penn really encourages cross-discipline research, and gives you the ability to make your own connections and find research opportunities where ever you want to do research.
B
10:42
Hi, would it be possible to learn an estimated city/state tax amount a PhD stipend will be subjected to in Philadelphia?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:43
B, that's a specific question that you should ask your program, as this varies based on the size of the stipend and how it is structured. I'm sorry that I don't have more information about that.
Sasi
10:43
And is it possible for masters students to obtain RA/TA positions for BE?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:43
Sasi, it can be - but you have to have completed at least one semester in good academic standing before you can apply.

I had a look at the World Ranking For Graduate Employment and it was difficult to find UPenn. Post-grad employment is an essential part of my decision as Ivy league schools come with Ivy League prices. UPenn is an Ivy league school which should mean that employment should not be an issue but this list got me a bit worried.
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:44
Dajr, you can find our career survey results here: https://www.vpul.upenn.edu/careerservices/surveys.php#GradStudent. As you'll see, the vast majority of our applicants have jobs/positions/additional opportunities.
Harshit

Thanks for the info!

10:44
Are the Salaries quoted in the Graduates' Survey before or after taxes?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:45
Dajr, that's most likely before taxes, as tax rates vary greatly across counties, states and the country.
HH
10:45
I read the master degree can cost from 55000to 63000,is that correct for material science mse?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:46
HH, you can find the current costs for all of our SEAS graduate programs here: https://gradadm.seas.upenn.edu/paying-for-your-education/
Harshit

Got it!
Kelvin

Hello, I submitted my application for the online MCIT program. Are you able to provide acceptance rate for the online program? Also, if I am not accepted during the early round, will my application be considered again during the regular round? Thank you
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:46
Kelvin, I'm sorry, but I'm not able to provide that at this time. As for your second question, no, applications are not reconsidered due to the number of applications we receive.
Harshit
10:46
Does UPenn have a quarter system or a semester system for Masters?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir

Harshit, we are on the semester system.
