Yeah, it wasn't  a horrific throw, just a normal off throw
Ben Clemens

I don't think so, though I don't have great insight into their thinking. They aren't the Nats, with a bullpen made of papier mache and good intentions.

OMG HE'S BEING CHASED BY A CIRCLE

Which Oakland reliever goes further than Manaea?
AvatarDan Szymborski
9:19
Well, Petit is baseball's long reliever.
Derek

Morton is awesome to watch.
AvatarDan Szymborski
9:20
He's looked sharper this inning so far.
Much better locations on the curves.
5 Run Homer
9:20
Oh my god it’s only the 3rd
AvatarDan Szymborski
9:20
Yeah, what is this, Red Sox-Yankees?
Ben Clemens
9:20
There's a tendency to do this 'use your starters as relievers' thing in the playoffs a ton, and while it absolutely has its place, using starters as starters has value too.
Audrey Stark

I still can't believe they don't just bunt in this situation. There's no one on the left side of the infield at all.
Cat

I am sorry for your loss, Dan.  I didn’t realize you lost Galileo....  =(
Ben Clemens
9:23
As a connoisseur of bunting for a hit, I'm not sure I'd be in favor of it here. It's hard to do, and a runner on first is so much less valuable with two outs than with one or none.
You'd want your success rate to be *really* high to bunt there
In fairness, it might be really high there. I don't know how good of a bunter Olson is offhand.

He passed away in mid-August at age 20. He had an abscess on his chin on a Thursday, but even with antibiotics, a secondary infection took over really quickly. In a 24 hour period, he went from normal to shock and the emergency vet wasn't even sure he could keep Galileo alive long enough to put him to sleep.
I mean it's a blessing he didn't have a long, wasting illness or anything, but it was still so shocking and quick.

"ESPN2 stream for every postseason game" is my presidential platform. i lose disastrously but get more protest votes than nader in 2000
AvatarDan Szymborski
9:24
Protest votes are the best. You don't want to actually get stuck BEING a president!

Every time I see Audrey's name I think of Game of Thrones and I am sorry

so do you guys think MAT was hit last night by the pitch from Hader, or did it hit the bat first?
Audrey Stark
9:25
MAT can do no wrong.
Hader should be fined for hitting such a precious cinnamon roll.
@Belli Flop I prefer Tony.
5 Run Homer
9:25
Audrey, do you get more dumb GoT jokes or dumb Iron Man jokes?
Ben Clemens
9:26
Matt Olson in 2017-2018: 4 fair bunts, 4 outs. Matt Olson in 2019: 5 fair bunts, 5 singles
AvatarDan Szymborski
9:26
There's a sort of cruel 2019 irony that the A's get a run in Morton's best inning so far
Derek
9:26
Honestly I didn't mind the TBS broadcast too much - Ernie Johnson is always fun and Ron Darling is usually pretty good. Franceour was meh...
Audrey Stark
9:26
@5 Run Homer I don't get it much at all. In baseball it's just getting asked if I'm related to Jayson. Which is a no.
AvatarDan Szymborski
9:27
Fun? In NBA, yes, but Ernie sounded almost bored to me yesterday. I was hoping he was going to do some Childish Gambino lyrics when he mentioned Soto's nickname, but no.
Jeremy

Ernie Johnson announces baseball like a guy who watched a lot in the 80s, but watches five games a season now.
AvatarDan Szymborski
9:27
This.
Ben Clemens
9:27
EJ seemed disinterested last night. I like him a lot on basketball broadcasts, but this wasn't as good.
AvatarDan Szymborski
9:27
There are very few broadcasters who can credibly do multiple sports.

Where is Cistulli?
AvatarDan Szymborski
9:27
At his house on the Styx, I assume.
Ben Clemens

Ron Darling is weird -- he's quite good on Mets broadcasts, especially when paired with Hernandez, but I don't always love him on national broadcasts.

WE chart on ESPN2 seems artificially wavy
Matt

Dan, are you implying that Joe Buck is basically Bo Jackson?
