Griffin Canning
3:36
Now that Griffin Canning seems past his injuries, can he take that next step forward and push his ERA down, or is he likely to remain what he's been through his career so far, and 4.00 ERA back-end guy?
Anthony Franco
3:38
I'm a fan of both, still not sure what happened with Sandoval that caused him to underperform this year. Stuff seemed more or less the same, I expect a bounceback closer to the 2022 level
3:39
I've always liked Canning as a #4 starter type. Just feels like you're crossing your fingers on him to stay healthy constantly, more so than the average pitcher. Was happy to see him hold up for a full year

After the trade deadline fiasco, is the Angels ability to sign free agents affected?
Anthony Franco
3:40
Nah I don't think the salary dump stuff will have an impact on their ability to sign players. It's not a great look but it made sense to try to get back below the CBT threshold and they're not the only team that did it. Yankees waived Bader, Guardians waived Moore themselves like two weeks later

put me in the minority, I LOVE Minasian. He has done so well in the draft but doesn’t reflect in our “rankings” because our prospects are already in the MLB and performing !
Anthony Franco
3:42
I've generally liked what Minasian has done over his tenure. I was really high on a lot of their moves last winter, think they were right to go for it at the deadline even though it immediately blew up
3:44
He's had a really tough situation. Most GM's get a season or two as a kind of grace period when they take over. Minasian came into an organization that didn't have that luxury because they knew they were three years from the Ohtani FA. Consistent mandate from ownership to go for it every year despite a preexisting bloated payroll and a mediocre MLB roster and farm system
3:45
Not everything has worked obviously. Giving up a pick for Tyler Anderson looks rough. The Giolito trade flopped. Stassi extension didn't pan out. But in general, I've found the thought process beyond the majority of their moves pretty well thought out

Does the MLB have the same ability to renegotiate a contract so that more money is tied up to one-time bonus, somewhat like the NFL? IE: would it be possible for Trout to take a big lump sum in 2024 as a bonus, while taking lesser AAV on the remainder of the deal? If he's more concerned about winning, but doesn't want to leave LA, it seems like such a move would benefit both sides.
Anthony Franco
3:47
They could restructure the contract however they want. I doubt this is of much interest to Angels ownership though
Or the front office if they're under pressure from ownership to show immediate progress next year
BuckRogers
3:47
Do the Angels roll with Shanuel as the 1B going into next season? Do they sign a backup or utility type to fit the need? I'm assuming Drury will be the full-time 2B and Jared Walsh gets non tendered
Anthony Franco
3:48
Agree on Walsh. I think Drury and Rengifo could split second base and move around the infield on occasion
3:50
The Schnauel call is really interesting. He was better than anyone reasonably could've expected making the jump directly from mid-major college arms to the big leagues. I think he's earned the right to get the initial look at first base
3:52
At the same time, he's going to have to hit for more power. Even if you're reaching base at a .400 clip, you can't slug .330 as a first baseman. So he'll have to keep improving as the year goes along to hold the first base job all year, but the pitch recognition and bat-to-ball skills were so impressive for a guy who was jumping about five competition levels compared to the pitching he was seeing in May
Non tenders
3:52
Do Suarez and Quijada get non-tendered? If yes, who do the Angels get to fill the lefty role in the pen?
Anthony Franco
3:54
Quijada gets NT, could try to bring him back on a minor league deal. The projection on Suarez is cheap enough I'd keep him around and let him battle for a sixth starter or long relief role
3:55
They fit on any of the non-Hader lefty relievers. Will Smith, Matt Moore reunion, Wandy Peralta, Scott Alexander, Andrew Chafin
Take your pick
West Coast Mets
3:55
What's your take on the fate of the coaching staff? Is it something we won't know about until a new manager is brought in?
Anthony Franco
3:56
Probably, that's typically how these things go. The coaches are kind of held in limbo until the new manager comes in and decides whether to reshape the staff
Guessing most of them will be back, but it's not uncommon for a new manager to make two or three changes
No name
3:57
Where does Kenny Rosenberg fit in next year?
Anthony Franco
3:58
Got a few questions about Rosenberg. Depth guy for me, I think he's best suited for long relief
DETMER
3:58
Will I become an ace? #2, #3? I fell a bit short last year.
Anthony Franco
4:02
Detmers is a #3/4 type for me. Reasonably deep repertoire but the breaking stuff doesn't miss quite as many bats as they feel like they should. He had a really hard time with LHH last year, which is atypical for a pitcher who leans so heavily on breaking stuff
4:03
Should be an effective starter overall but I think the game-to-game performance will continue to be pretty volatile
Grichuk
4:03
Any chance of resigning him to a one-year deal ($5-7MM). I like him as a relatively inexpensive corner OF with Moniak as a 4th OF. And you have to expect injuries over the course of 162 games.
Anthony Franco
4:05
I don't see it. He was terrible down the stretch and they placed him on waivers a couple times. I agree they could use a veteran outfielder in the price range you mentioned, but it feels best for everybody if Grichuk heads elsewhere and they get Adam Duvall or sign someone who'd been non-tendered instead

Seems like the Angels are the AL equivalent of the Rockies. Willing to make moves and spend money to win, but the moves just don’t pan out. Feels unreasonable for fans to expect that every front office is always going to hit on every transaction, no?
Anthony Franco
4:07
They're kind of similar. Both ownership groups have a lot to do with why they haven't translated slightly above-average spending into on-field results
4:08
The ways they get there are different though. The Rockies are loyal to a fault to both their employees and players, to a point where it's clear that they don't have a great sense for how their own players stack up against the rest of the league (probably in part because their park is unique)
4:09
Arte Moreno's a lot more erratic when it comes to handling upper management, and I don't think their front office is misevaluating their players so much as they're just always trying to play Whac-a-Mole because they're not in position to build the organization from the ground up

Do you see a contract with Ohtani benefiting the Angels because he could "rehab" here, where he hits well, have the first year be bit less than the rest and have an opt out clause after one year where he can go elsewhere?
Anthony Franco
4:11
I don't think Ohtani will have to do this. The record contract should be out there now
Grichuk
4:11
I was terrible down the stretch?  The stats would say otherwise.  And they put me on waivers for $$ reasons
Anthony Franco
4:13
Fair point, I should've worded that better. He was fine in September. His overall Angels tenure wasn't good though -- .216/.264/.412 in 54 games. And the fact that he cleared both times they tried to offload the money suggests that the league was pretty down on him overall
Ohtani Contract
4:13
How soon after the World Series will we see the first serious contract offered to Ohtani.  It sure seems like his signing or not signing will affect nearly 10 teams' offseason strategies.
Anthony Franco
4:14
Feels like a situation where things really start to pick up around the Winter Meetings
