Great question, Sarah. Exercise induced asthma (EIA) can be treated with different medications. First thing first is to confirm the diagnosis, milder problem can respond to albuterol (with spacer) 15-30min before exercise, more severe ones may need daily controller such as montelukast(singulair) or inhaled steroid (or other inhalers).

What's the difference between allergies and asthma?

Great question! Allergies and asthma may be similar or different entities depend on the trigger. As you can imaging both ear/nose/throat are continuous into airway, so same allergy process or viral infection can affect/cause worsening of both symptoms.

However, asthma is a syndrome of multiple underlying trigger to airway inflammation, sometimes this can be different from upper airway allergy.

Different allergy and airway study can help clarify the two.

Any suggestions on natural teas  that help block histamine release?

Hi Kay, good questions - natural/herbal supplements are often considered in allergy situation, including honey discussion I had above. However, most of these are hard to study. To my knowledge, I am not aware of significant natural tea or supplement significant help allergy symptoms. Excessive sugary food/beverage can, however, reduce mucus clearance and worsen congestion symptoms in airway.

My daughter seems to have a lot of allergic reactions to fruit and vegetables unless they are organic, what would cause this ?

Dear Angela, great question but the subject is a vast one. Quick answer would be: organic food/label are poorly regulated, and I'm not sure if there's difference when it comes to fruit/veg (organic or not). We do suggest less processed food is good, and wash fruit/veg clean before consuming. If she gets evaluated doctors can help distinguish problems.

Is it safe to take Zyrtec or Claritin when pregnant?

Thanks Lisa, great question. Many of allergy and asthma medicine are acceptable pregnancy risk, but it would be important to check with your OB doctor to help clarify/coordinating.

Either claritin or zyrtec at 1 pill a day are considered pregnancy category B (same in human data), for asthma medicine, many inhalers (including inhaled steroid) are safe and necessary to control asthma/allergy during pregnancy - I would definitely check in once with allergist if you have additional concern (or symptoms) during pregnancy (and even better, have a conversation before you plan pregnancy).
