Julio - I think you just said it; you've been doing high impact research that would potentially bolster your application when looked at regarding a potential (in your mind at least) lack of academic rigor for your degree. The entire application is looked at as a whole, so it is rare that one factor will cause the entire thing to be dismissed.

Thanks, also what is the last date for they to hold interview? CIS Phd program
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:22
Yunchu, it is up to the dept, so unfortunately, I don't know.

Hi Will, thanks for your time, I was wondering if the admission committee release the short list student before final decision?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:23
Nastaran, no, and I'm not familiar with that practice at all. If you are admitted, you'll be notified directly of the decision.

Hi Will, for CS PhD applicants, 1) what's the timeline on decisions 2) If one of my submitted papers just got accepted(this week), can I possibly update my CV/SOP/etc. by sending new results to the school? Thanks!
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:24
Alch 1) We try to get them out 6-8 weeks after the deadline, but before April 15th. 2) You can send an updated cv/resume to admissions2@seas.upenn.edu, but there's no guarantee that new information will be used at this time.

Good morning Mr. Fenton, can I update my transcript for the application? My degree was still in process when I submitted the application so the transcript I uploaded did not cover all the courses I have taken. Can I update a complete transcript? I applied for PhD program in mechanical engineering.
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:24
Dahan, you can send a new transcript to admissions2@seas.upenn.edu.

Hi Mr. Fenton, I have applied for the ESE program hoping to do a specialisation in robotics. Is that a viable option or should I opt for the MSE robotics program. I am applying to the ESE department because I am an Undergrad in electrical engineering.
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:25
Ranjani, it is really up to you - the best option would be to apply to both, if you are truly concerned. However, please note that the degrees to specialize in different areas, so you should look closely at the program pages for the example course list that you would take, should you be admitted.

Hi Will, I was wondering if you happen to know whether all interview invitations for the Bioengineering PhD program have been sent out. Thanks!
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:25
Guest 1, I do not, as this is handled directly by the program.

Hi Will, am I guaranteed a decision on my application by a certain date? I would imagine that an acceptance would come in 6-8 weeks, but would a rejection come as well? I know some schools only give out rejections in March or April so that they may release more acceptances if enough people do not accept their offers.
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:26
Nick, you are not if you applied to the PhD program. I'm sorry, but these decisions are made on a rolling basis.

Hi, do you know when I will head about decisions regarding my phd application for computer science
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:26
Guest, nope, we try and send them out 6-8 weeks after the deadline and before Aprli 15th, if possible.
Habib

Is there any interview as a part of EE Ph.D. admission process?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:27
Habib, there usually is, but those are handled by the dept.

Good morning Will!   My toefl score is 92, and my GRE score is 317+3. May I ask the possibility of applying for the master program of TESOL? Or do I have no chance
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:27
Cindy, I'm sorry, but this is the Engineering school - we don't offer a master in TESOL. That is the Graduate School of Education.
Jesse Kemmerling

It is okay thank you very much. Is there any financial assistance, such as, fellowships, scholarships, or assistantships offered to MS students? I am applying to the MS EE program
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:28
We do not offer financial aid to master's students. You can find a link to potential aid sources at the top of the chat.

AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir

Hi Dr.Fenton. I am applying for CGGT program. When will the decisions go out?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:29
Steve, decisions will be released on April 5.
Brendan
10:29
Hi, I applied to the bioengineering PhD program. While I hope to be admitted, I recognize that UPenn is very selective. If I am rejected, is there an opportunity to apply for a master's degree? I really like the research and faculty at UPenn and would love to study at the department.
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:29
Brendan, you can apply for a master's program, but only until Feb 1, as that is the master's application deadline.
Tom Zhang
10:29
Hi Will, what email should I send my updated transcript to for CS PhD program?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:29
Tom, you should send it to admissions2@seas.upenn.edu.
Felipe Borja

Hi Will. In your opinion, what is the most noteworthy unique feature of pursuing graduate studies at UPenn?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:30
Felipe, I'd say number one is the cross-discipline opportunities for working with world-class faculty.
Ranjani
10:30
Good morning Mr. Fenton. Is it possible to pursue Robotics even while applying to the MSE in ESE? Or do I specifically apply to the MSE Robotics program?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:30
Ranjani, there are specializations you can pursue, but if your true desire is robotics, then you should apply to the robotics program.
iambishwa
10:30
That's great. Can you pls tell me how much time do they give to an applicant between invitation for the interview and the interview interview itself?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:31
Iambishwa, I don't know as the dept handles all of the planning of the interviews.
Rachel
10:31
Hi Mr. Fenton, for the BE PhD program, how important is it to be invited to the interview weekends in February?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:31
Rachel, it is not imperative, but it is still pretty darn important. Also, they will be having a total of four weekends, so if you don't make the first cut, there is still hope.
