Hi, sorry I was a little unclear before but my application is in the MSE in Computer and Information Sciences program. The website listed the first round deadline for that to be February 1st

Abhiraj, I'm sorry, but you can find all of the deadlines listed here: https://gradadm.seas.upenn.edu/how-to-apply/ . There were two deadlines: Nov 15 and March 15.

Hi Will, I wonder could international student use CPT directly after admitted or after one year study for MS data science major? Thanks!
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:21
Fanghao, that would ultimately be a question for our International Students and Scholars Services office, and you can email them at isss@pobox.upenn.edu. But to my knowledge, you can't use CPT for your first semester.

Hi Will, I applied for the CGGT program.  I did not receive decision on previous two decision dates, so will the graduate admissions definitely send me the decision on April 5? Besides, I want to ask whether there are still some spots for this program? Thank you very much!
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:21
Qiaosen, yes, you should be receiving a decision tomorrow. There are still spots in the program.

Follow up question (I applied to the MCIT program): I had to apply late because of when I scheduled my GRE. If rejected this round would it make sense to apply for the early/regular deadline next year?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:22
Lorenzo, the main question you'd have to ask yourself is what will have changed on your application between now (if you are rejected) and next Nov 15, the first round deadline. If nothing has really changed, then I don't know that the outcome would change either.

Will, other universities are asking me to commit in the next 2-3 weeks. I have not yet received an answer for my MEAM PhD program. If I do not receive an answer by the time I commit, I imagine my best bet would be to accept at another university. Is there a hard deadline for the rolling admissions decisions? If I don't get a decision in time, can I be refunded for my application?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:23
John, unfortunately, there is not a "hard" deadline for these decisions to be released. We are working towards that, but ultimately it's up to each individual program. To your other question, no, we don't refund application fees.

Hi Will,
How many applications are received for the MSE in Data Science program and what's the intake this year ?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:24
Sigoel, last year we received 748 and this year we received over 1000. I don't know what the intake will be this year, as applications are still being reviewed. Last year we admitted 65.

Yuhui, you're welcome!
Fanghao
10:21
Also, what would be the expected class size for MS data science?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:25
Fanghao, I don't know at this point, but last year we admitted 65.
Rohit

Hey Will!
I wanted to know my status on the admit portal is still Ready for Review. Is that expected or it should be Under Review or something for MSE in CIS?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:25
Rohit, it will remain that way until the program makes a decision. Then you'll receive an email notifying you that there is a decision available.

I applied to Masters of Biotechnology program. Since there is limited financial assistance is provided for masters students. I was wondering what is the scope of on-campus jobs ( including GA/TA/RA) for masters students. What is their availability and much do they pay and weekly work limit for international students?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:27
Sheena, RA/TA positions in Engineering are hourly paid and vary by program/dept/semester. As for On-Campus Jobs, there is literally every kind of job, and they have rates from around $8 p/h to $20+ p/h.
You can also find potential aid sources here: http://www.cis.upenn.edu/prospective-students/graduate/aid.php

Rohit
10:23
what is the acceptance rate and class size for MSE in CIS?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:28
Rohit, last year the acceptance rate was 10% and the class size was 73
Joe
10:25
For the "Open Electives" option in the requirements checklist for graduation, what are the limitations? Can we take literally any class?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:30
Joe, you'd talk that over with your program. I believe that is open as in anything within Engineering. Ultimately, the program will be able to give you a better answer though, as program requirements can change on a yearly basis, especially when it comes to electives.
Sheena
10:28
And also how many applications are received for the Biotechnology program and whats the intake for this year?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:30
Sheena, last year we received 177. I can't release the specifics for this cycle at the moment.
Ayankas
10:28
Thank you Will for the information regarding the visa applications. I'm from India and my top priority for Master's right now is UPenn. I went through the funding options and I got a bit confused. I would like to know if there are any specific scholarships or fellowships I should aim for as a student of MSE Nanotechnology. Moreover, the on campus part-time employment available, how far can they assist me in paying my tuition fees? I plan to take an educational loan, so I wish to know how far these on campus jobs can help me cut back on the expenses?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:32
Ayankas, Penn Engineering doesn't provide funding for master's students. There is a wide variety of on-campus jobs that you can find through the student employment portal, but you have to be a registered student before you can start looking. http://www.sfs.upenn.edu/seo/, in addition, you may be able to find funding sources here: http://www.cis.upenn.edu/prospective-students/graduate/aid.php

Hi, I have applied for the MSE in Data Science degree, and was wondering if you host events/Industry seminars as part of the program?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:32
Haren, yes, the program does, as does our career services office.
Tiffany
10:28
Hi Will,
How many applicants were there for the MCIT program this year? Is there a cap on the number of admissions?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:33
Tiffany, there may be a cap, but the program won't disclose that if there is. As for how many applicants, we had 715 last year. We are not disclosing this years numbers yet.
Fanghao
10:28

Hi Will! Could you please tell us how many students are usually admitted to the Data Science program each year?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:33
Yue, last year was the first full year and we admitted 65.
