Welcome, chatters. Baseball is back and it's another full queue, so let's rock!

Hi Brent. With Bouchard being sent down I have an excess of minor leaguers on my bench. Who would you keep, Bouchard or Crow Armstrong?
Brent Hershey
12:02
Crow-Armstrong; you'll probably have to wait longer for the activation but the reward should be much greater. More athletic, better lineup, D will keep him in when he gets called up.
Mahomes
12:06
In AL-only league. Looking for early anomalies between BBHQ playing time forecasts and how teams have started. Seems like Tyler Freeman was forecasted to be part-time infielder but is starting CF. Is he a growth stock? What kind of stats can we now expect?
Brent Hershey
12:06
Yes, that's a fair one. Four games in, does seem like Freeman is their CFer. The one caveat is that he's not played CF at all previously -- but coming up through the minors, had a better hit tool that he was given credit for. Looked good in the short stints I saw over the weekend. Could be a 12 HR/ 15 guy if he sticks the whole year?
Bob
12:07
Do you think Kopech will be the Sox closer?
Brent Hershey
12:07
Long-term, he remains my fave in that bullpen. Scouts long saw a move there; has the stuff and the opportunity. I'm still stashing where I can.

Brent Hi! In 12-tm H2H categories, and have taken hit for SOLDS w Sewald and Duran on IL! Rank best two ‘to the rescue’ of Yimi Garcia, Yuki Matsui, McArthur, Brock Stewart, Sborz, Alvarado or Hoffman? Ratios important! Thanks!
Brent Hershey
12:09
Hoffman/Alvarado; best team w/ shots at saves. Yimi then Sborz (more for holds only at this point) in next tier.

12:15
nl only 5x5, I have two drops to make, all bench players. Tyler Black, smith-shawver, Christian Scott. Perez and Buehler both on IL, already stashing Horton. No backup at 3b, and Luis Garcia at Mi. Hold tight for black call up? Curious to see he’s started 3 AAA games at DH.
Brent Hershey
12:15
Yeah, if you need 3B backup, would probably (?) Black for now and see how MIL handles 3B early on. (I'm assuming the rest of your roster is strong and you're still going for it this year). Given your IL pitchers, I'd pick which one of AJSS, Scott, Horton you want to keep, and then begrudingly trim the rest. I'd probably go with AJSS as the keep, as he's the no-doubt 6th starter if they need it here early on. Scott, Horton may have higher long-term ceilings, but further away from MLB. Tough call.
Beano
12:18
Hello Brent! Welcome to a new season! 10 team NL 5x5: thoughts on Ben Brown?
Also - Burleson, Winker or E Olivares as possible offensive contributors?
Brent Hershey
12:18
Thank you Beano! I need to go back and watch the Ben Brown outing, frankly. If the Cubs plan to keep him up (even as a pen option), I'm interested in buying the dip. If he was leaving everything middle-middle and just getting torched, not to much for right now.
Definitely tracking Winker ... young enough to find it again; should play in WAS; hitting up in the batting order. Olivares next, then Burleson.

Overreaction to 3 games!!! What is your usual timeline of variation assessment? When do you actually start to hit the panic button? I’m in a dynasty league where you can keep everyone and keep forever and I’m always concerned I wait too long and ignore a breakout.
Brent Hershey
12:20
In a situation like that, I TRY and wait a month before getting too crazy. I know you have to act quickly and all, and I'm not saying don't use your bench, but not moving on from potential breakouts or established guys just yet. Remember all the work you did over the winter and trust those evals for now.

Hi Brent, NL only, traditional 5x5, looking for a  pitcher, non-closer who could give quality innings, k’s and wins or saves. Some available are Strahm,Ryan Thompson,Lucas sims, Gallegos,Daniel Hudson,Nardi.    Thanks
Brent Hershey
12:22
Especially interested guys like this on good/great teams, as that also gives them a slightly better wins potential. So, Strahm, Hudson, Thompson stand out more than the others from your list.

How likely is it that Bo Bichette turns in a $15 season or less? I feel like his success relies on a tightrope act of skills and his name might actually carry more value than the majority of his range of outcomes.
Brent Hershey
12:25
I don't think it's "likely", but it is in the range of plausible outcomes. The issue for me is that he's still so young, and while being a mild disappointment so far, the skills and pedigree could pop really at any time. But you're not wrong, either, that he tends to be slightly overvalue b/c of that name and prospect hype. If he's not running much, then the downside to the $15 end of season valuation is greater, obviously.

Are we getting a full szn of Foley in the closer roll in DET?
Brent Hershey
12:27
Too early to say; my bids in leagues last night reflected my lack of confidence in this happening, however. Partially the non-traditional closer skills (from a swing + miss, stuff standpoint); partially the 'meh' team context (for now). Don't hate it as a short-term play, though, which was reflected in my bids.

Health is a skill. Ask Senzel, Jimenez,  and Lewis. They are like concrete; it’s not if they crack, but when. Just bad luck, or is the Jobu doll working?
Brent Hershey
12:36
Amazing, right? Took that trio four games to all be on the shelf. Would put Buxton, Stanton on that list, too, unfortunately, and there are others of course. It's why I TRY (not always successfully) to fold that risk into my pre-season draft evaluations. Until proven otherwise, the seasons that players in this group stay healthy all year are the outliers -- and likely, I'll miss out.

I over drafted SP.
Brent Hershey
12:38
Nah, too early for those sweeping declarations. Roughly 1.9% of the 2024 schedule has been played.

Mixed 5x5 - drop Brebbia for Wacha, Cortes, Paxton, or Detmers?
Brent Hershey
12:39
Detmers first; Cortes next
Larry Cleese
12:41
AL OBP Lg - Korey Lee, Reese McGuire, or Thaiss?
Brent Hershey
12:41
Rough for sure. Thaiss had better walk rate in the minors. Lee might get more PT?
T. LaRussa

Hi Brent - I had the great misfortune of having Puk, Nola and Ober in my H2H points league.  Dropped Puk for Kroshay.  What is your worry level for Nola and Ober on a 1-5 scale?
Brent Hershey
12:45
Where 5 is very worried ...
Nola a 1 (gives up HR; but huge track record of success; facing one of the top offenses in ATL)
Ober: 2.5. Has shown has the goods to make it work in MLB; no reason to cut yet. Give him a few more. He makes this same start in July, and while it stinks, no one hardly blinks an eye. First one in April is magnified because that one game ERA = season-long ERA (and WHIP and everything else)

Need desperately a 3B for the next 3 months in deep NL-only 5x5.  Can you rank the first three? Mastrobuoni, Triolo, Short, Monasterio, Dunn, Eguy Rosario or Sosa.
Brent Hershey
12:48
With trying to maximize AB in an only-league ...
  1. Triolo, far and away. Has won a fulltime job for now
  2. Monestario, feel like he's next closest to a job; most AB
  3. Crap shoot now ... probably Dunn - just b/c that MIL 3B job is unsettled; the others all pretty much behind solid starters.

Hey, Brent. How big are you on Crews? Do you think he debuts this season?

Thanks!
Brent Hershey
12:50
Yeah, I'm a believer. Think he makes his debut this year, but Wood still is likely ahead of him on the timeline given JW's monster spring. But Crews should be a well-rounded fantasy player once he gets settled. All depends on the timing of the call, but not sure I'd pencil in immediate impact in 2024.

12:51
A last-minute question from Jack's mom! Be honest, aren't you feeling a little better about my son now? On to Oakland!
Brent Hershey
12:51
Sure, I'd rather him put up the start he did yesterday than get smacked around. There's a path there for success for sure. Encourage him to continue throwing strikes.

12:53
What to make of Lourdes Gurriel Jr.’s hot start? We are four games in and all of them were vs. COL… but anything suggest that this early power surge might stick?
Brent Hershey
12:53
Eh, a bit (could stick) ... but you mentioned the big part. That COL staff is just not very challenging. LG Jr a very solid performer on a very good team and is young enough to possibly take another step up.
