Hey all -- welcome to the Monday chat! Lotsa great topics in general and questions in the queue ... feel free to add as we go. Onward!

Would you rather drop Fairbanks or Kimbrel?
Brent Hershey
12:05
Wow, a doozy to start with. With what we know now ... I'd probably choose immediate health. Which means as of this writing Kimbrel is not yet on the IL, I'd stick with him. But don't envy that choice if it has to be made today.

Hey Brent, NL only, 5x5, need corner pick-up. Any insight on my options: Mervis, wisdom, senzel , Tyler Fitzgerald, I Vargas, eggy Rosario,  Emanuel Rivera.   Thank you
Brent Hershey
12:07
Like the first question, I think I'd let PT form my answer for right now. And to me, that's Senzel, even though his long-term injury history creates some pause. Mervis, then Fitzgerald would be next. If they keep finding PT for Fitzy, there could be some interesting output there.

good afternoon...MJ Melendez...good spring, great start....and now...well, I'm looking for good things under the hood.  What do you have for me?
Brent Hershey
12:11
  1. Age
  2. Still crushing the ball from a Statcast perspective - barrels, exit velocity all still oustanding
  3. Has cut his K% back some from 2023. Still not great, but it's better
  4. Getting killed by unfortunate ball-in-play data (.211 BABIP; league average around .280). Means BA due to improve.
I get the frustration — esp given the spring — but hold if you can.

Are Uribe's struggles just a blip or does it look like more of long-term issues?  Still see him as a future closer?
Brent Hershey
12:13
Without watching all of his outings closely, seems like regular young-player struggles. Needs to be benched in fantasy right now, and while yes, there's still future closer stuff, seems more likely it's 2025 than 2024.

12:16
Have Ruiz on my team solely for the stolen bases of course, but he's eating up a roster spot if he's going to remain a part-time player. Do you see him back to holding a full time position this year? Do you see him as a starter the next couple of years or more likely always a part-time player?
Brent Hershey
12:16
First part (this year) ... no idea given how odd the A's treatment of him has been. Doesn't seem to bode well for 2024.
Second part (longer term) ... I think there's too many flaws in his game to be a long-term full timer on a good club. Doesn't mean he won't be productive fantasywise ... but in for instance in a dynasty format, I don't see him as a foundational piece. I'm probably not giving up on him for 2024 redraft just yet, b/c of the explosive potential, but he's not someone I'm looking to acquire, for instance.

Hi Brent. Someone in my 12-team 5X5 OBP league dropped Torkelson. I’m tempted to pick him up, but he hasn’t hit the ball hard at all this year, and I’d have to bench Michael Busch to play him (and probably cut Fraley to pick him up). Gamble on Torkelson remembering how to drive the ball, or sit tight with Busch and Fraley?
Brent Hershey
12:17
In this case, I'd sit tight I think. Great example of 'it all depends on your options,' b/c in certain situations, I think it makes sense to take that shot. But with Busch/Fraley in hand, I'd hold.

In AL-only 5x5. Here at end of April, considering swapping out 1-2 bad SP with good non-closer RP. Several already have multiple wins - Luke Weaver, Shelby Miller, Scott Barlow, Justin Slaten. Any of them worthy of a pickup for ROS W, ERA, Whip? Or is it better to target higher-skilled non-closers like Brock Stewart and Chris Martin? Thanks.
Brent Hershey
12:24
Think this is a classic 'chase skills' question. (IE, don't get enamored with wins to date; esp fickle w/ relievers.). So I'd throw all 6 into one list and come out with something like
Stewart / Miller / Slaten / Martin <gap> Barlow, Weaver

Hi Brent,  playing in 12-teamer roto league where will also score OBP and SLG.  Have a choice between Kepler, Adell, Larnach, and Joc P as bench depth (so platooning vs. LHP is not necessarily) a bad thing. Who offers the most upside?
Brent Hershey
12:26
Fantasy upside is probably Adell; given he's providing SB so far along w power and (thankfully) a smaller K rate. But, aggressive approach will not help w/ OBP as much. Next are likely Larnach (nice strides in 2024 so far), Kepler and JocP

Hi Brent, 12 team NL only Mendoza league  (basically uses RunsCreated for hitters and RunsAllowed for pitchers) Have Davis and Campusano at V - both are sucking and Davis maybe on a sort lease. Been offer Wm Contreras or Pat Baily in a swap involving Jordan Walker. I think I can get a little more for Walker and I like Turang, India and Miguel Vargas on his roster. I suspect he'll balk at Turang but India and Vargas are possibles. Should I go forward?
Brent Hershey
12:29
I'd explore, yes; and more seriously consider the Contreras (MIL, right?) offer for Walker. Like that a lot better than India + Vargas. Also ... I'd be patient with Campusano if you can. Have more confidence on him than Davis turning it around.

What to make of Gleyber's awful start? A man can only be so patient
Brent Hershey
12:30
Hold; last 7 days were better at least. Still early.

12:34
Hiya! As always, thanks for these chats. NL 10 Team 5x5. I am looking at a FAAB bid on M Mervis (we have $100 for the year) - 1. should I ?  2. Is $10-$15 in the right range?
Also- thoughts on T Fitzgerald, M Vientos?
On the pitching side: S Cecconi, H Wesneski?
Brent Hershey
12:34
Hey Beano! I'd def prefer Mervis over Fitz and Vientos (would be much more into Vientos if I knew he was staying up). You're gonna know best, but 10-15 seems on the high range for Mervis. I'd monitor Fitzgerald's PT closely; he's likely not too far from being relevant in a 10-team NL like yours. Would be worse options than putting down $1 for him this week. No guarantees, but has shown some hit and speed skills.
Have some affinity for both of the pitchers; watched Cecconi's starts and came away impressed. Probably slightly better opp right now to stick than Wesneski, who still has to prove he's beyond the swing-man type. Good luck!

Follow up on the earlier Ruiz question: if interested in this year only, would you drop Ruiz for a "hot hand" SB player like Jacob Young? I drafted Ruiz to be my primary SB source but if it takes all year (or longer) to work through A's playing time drama would it be better to stream the roster spot?
Brent Hershey
12:36
This seems like a great option (treat it as an SB streamer spot). Young fits that perfectly for now -- just be ready to move on if he struggles and/or Woods/Crews arrive and seem to take his PT.

Who wins the battle for 3B at NYM? Baty or Vientos?  Or more likely a time share all year?  Much chance Vientos gets a lot of AB at DH or elsewhere?
Brent Hershey
12:38
I'm Team Baty on this one; like the adjustments he's made so far. In fact, I was under the impression that MV is up only for as long as Marte is away. Obv if he keeps up the walk-offs, they'll find room and then there's a longer discussion, but this is Baty right now.

Hi Brent, BBHQ sub here.  I have Rosario and Caballero and have been mixing and matching SS/2B in Yahoo roto 5x5. Do both of them have juice for the rest of the year?
Brent Hershey
12:43
Very fair question. Been surprised at Caballero's output and still not quite sure I believe it (1% walk rate; .247 xBA, 87 xPX). And Rosario has been great also. I probably would ride what you have right now with them both, but not consider it a closed case for the rest of the season. Especially once Caminero comes up (who I expect will be close to an everydayer), things will shift for sure.

12:47
Help please.  I need to drop one of Senzel, Tim Anderson, Blake Perkins or Donovan.  10 team NL only; I need help in all hitting categories thanks to slow starts from Carroll and Lindor.  Leaning towards Senzel, both because of his history (injury and low BA) and where he's batting in relatively weak offense. Your thoughts for ROS?  Thanks
Brent Hershey
12:47
Think I'd likely move on from Tim Anderson. He's playing every day, but the Ks are WAY up and the power is pacing like last year's. Has 3 SB but a 270 OBP in a worse offense than Senzel's. And I hear ya on Senzel's injury history, but right now he's playing every day and showing some pop. I'd cross my fingers with that one and just go, I think.

Love your work, Brent.  I have Pablo Lopez in my 12 team roto.  The underlying numbers look ok but it has been a bumpy ride.  Will it smooth out?
Brent Hershey
12:47
Yes; not worried. At this point trust the underlying numbers.

Barger 4x4 AL only keeper..20 plus HR 2025?
Brent Hershey
12:50
20+ in 2025 might be a bit steep ... in general, yes, I think there could be some keeper-league value there.

George Springer and Bichette, are they really struggling or just small sample, thank you!
Brent Hershey
12:54
Note that both can be true :-)
Bo - should be fine. BABIP and a bit too many grounders killing him right now. Running some more, so that is good. Patience here.
Springer - even less concerned, as contact metrics are up
Probably just need to wait these out.

12:56
With all the pieces Cubs have what do you see as chances of Crow-Armstrong sticking around ROS?
Brent Hershey
12:56
Not a slam-dunk for sure. The one thing he has going for him is the amazing CF defense. That could extend his stay and make them adjust elsewhere -- a bit like the Phillies are doing now with Johan Rojas (lowering offensive expectations; just catch the ball, kid).

Dear Brent, I have hope in my heart that CES will start to produce some usable stats in my 12 team roto league.  Should I keep a space open in my heart or is it time to move on?  Thanks,  a loyal read at Baseball HQ.
