Monday greets; ya'll! Ready to rock here, and looks like from the number of questions, so are you! So we're off...
Bob
12:02
Would you rather stash Skenes or Woo ROS?
Brent Hershey
12:02
Interesting; think I'd prefer Skenes, just on upside alone -- and I'm a big fan of Woo. Do the right thing, Bucs!

What is going on with Astros RP Bryan Abreu?  Velo down, hittable and hasn't pitched all that much. Hidden injury?
Brent Hershey
12:08
So early to make these judgements, espec with relievers. Our numbers say the FB velo change has been 0.6 mph; hard to call that a "dip" this early. OTOH, we all know relievers are fickle. Just don't have enough solid info through 3 appearances and 2.2 IP.

gotta ask. did  r. blanco find something is houston in for a treat?
Brent Hershey
12:10
Could be ... and even post-Brent Strom, this org has had success turning little-hyped pitchers into solid rotation pieces (pre-injury Luis Garcia; Javier; France to an extent last year). That change-up is a filthy weapon. Good spot to take a shot early this year.

I just  read that  Cole could be back by the end of May, whats your opinion,Thanks, possible trade
Brent Hershey
12:11
Totally my opinion, but I'm skeptical of counting on him for much in 2024, especially in light of a few minor skills setbacks in 2023.

Hi Brett! Thanks, as always, for doin these chats. NL 10 team 5x5
Your thoughts on Ashby?
Also - which hitter would you prefer to have: Winker, Dunn, I Herrera, Madrigal, Amaya or Burleson?
Brent Hershey
12:15
Walks and health are the things to watch with Ashby. In an NL-only, probably taking a shot; otherwise willing to wait it out through a few starts.

After getting burned last year, I'm back on the Winker train, and for sure he's my choice of these six. Feel like WAS is the best place for him to rebuild his value. IF the struggles the past few years were health-related and he's over them, seems like a perfect landing spot for him to play every day. Young enough to still thrive.

Hi, for 2nd catcher Wong or Mcguire? Thank you for answering my question
Brent Hershey
12:15
Wong. Think what he provides has broader category appeal.
Bob
12:18
Do you think Kirby Yates has a shot at saves in Texas?
Brent Hershey
12:18
A shot? Yes, and with Sborz at least temporarily out of the picture, he probably only trails Robertson if Leclerc struggles. But it's a longer-term play at this point.
Marcel
12:21
Hi, any observations on Max Fried? According to your website his velocity dropped from 96 to 89 mph between his two starts. Do I bench him this week?
Brent Hershey
12:21
Definitely a rough two starts, and yes that velo drop (and corresponding hittability - 10 H, 7 ER) is concerning. Our data still likes him v NYM this week ... but could see holding him back if you have other options.

Hi, I need a 5th outfielder : benintendi, sheets, mccarthy, t taylor, renfroe, gordon, fletcher, burleson, Profar? Please rank,  Thank you
Brent Hershey
12:23
Will assume reg 5x5 scoring: Would go Beni, then Renfroe due to those two playing full-time. Then McCarthy, Taylor, Fletcher, Burleson, Gordon, Profar.

Charlie Morton worth a pickup? Would probably release Pfaadt.
Brent Hershey
12:28
Yes, probably a good move for now esp if you're needing wins. Though I'd keep an eye on it throughout.

Drop E Ruiz for Cowser in a 10 team w 5 bench?
Brent Hershey
12:29
Yes, though I wonder if you couldn't find a better full-timer instead of Cowser in a 10.

Can I panic on Aaron Nola yet? His results were decent last outing, but under the hood he hasn't looked good yet.
Brent Hershey
12:30
No, you can't. Too early — and I hear you that the metrics have not been good. But you likely have decent draft capital in a player like this, I'd continue to ride for now.

I have McCormick OF in 10 team league. Kiriloff is available . Wondering what you think. Head to head league  OPS, HR, BA, RBI, R, SBN
Brent Hershey
12:32
Pretty even, I think -- though right now I have more confidence in McCormick getting more AB. MIN has faced only 1 LHP so far, and AK was on the bench. They do get 2 this week; watch to see  if AK is in there or not.

How concerned should I be about Griffin Canning at this stage? Thanks.
Brent Hershey
12:35
Don't like that the SwK rate is down after two starts. Liked him a bunch coming into the season. I'd consider benching, but likely not replacing, just yet. Does get a positive rating via our BHQ Matchups tool vs. TAM this week.

Tovar making hard contact and lifting the ball early on.  Love to see that.  Do we see him moving up the order and maybe some Coors magic pushing stat line to a $15-20 season?
Brent Hershey
12:36
Think that's entirely possible. The COL lineup overall should not have too many obstacles for that to happen.

Happy Eclipse Day! Not as much a question as I just want to complain about the Baseball Gods. We are less than 14 games into the season and my team includes: Matt Brash, Bryan Woo, Jhoan Duran, Nick Lodolo, Noelvi Marte and get the Spencer Strider news on top of the Josh Jung news. I originally thought I could wait out some of these injuries but they are starting to pile up. I’m really leaning into the “If I didn’t have bad luck I’d have none at all.” It’s a dynasty OBP 5x5 league and I figure I’m just going to wait and see what happens before I make moves.  Thanks, I feel better already. Good talk.
Brent Hershey

Here for ya, Michael. Enjoy the eclipse!

12:42
Good afternoon Brent-I want to eclipse all my league buddies and have two questions. 1) In a 12 team 5x5 $260 dynasty league-Would you trade Gavin Williams ($5 in year 2) for Xavier Isaac (in minors) as I am weak at CO? Other pitchers I have are Gerrit Cole, Kyle Bradish, John Means, Jordan Romano on IR and Brady Singer,Luis Gil, Erick Fedde, Ross Stripling and Shelby Miller guys I picked up after the draft. 2) I have my last draft this Wednesday, what IR pitcher would be best long-term between Jeffrey Springs, Jacob DeGrom, Lance McCullers, Drew Rasmussen, Shane McClanahan and Felix Bautista-looking next year/long-term? As always thanks for your input! Greg
Brent Hershey

Had to post this for the intro alone. Well done!
  1. Depends on your contention window. If you feel you're still in the running even with those injuries, then I'd hold and hope for a G-Williams influx the rest of the way. If your offense is shaky and/or you're purely looking to the future, then that trade makes some sense.
  2. deGrom-Bautista-McClanahan are three that stand out, not necessarily in that order. Good luck!

MJ Melendez always seems to be a statcast darling, further confirmed by Nickrand's column this morning.  But despite that, the projections are quite modest.  Why the disconnect between the two?  Thanks.
Brent Hershey
12:47
Young player variance. Projections are going to lean conservative, b/c that's the most plausible long-term outcome.  Stephen and others' work on the site take into account more short-term skills gains to give readers tips as to what "could" happen -- and his rosy writeup this morning points to a ~10-G sample that is not enough to move our projections.

12:49
Jose Siri start has been very enjoyable so far.  Chances we get a 250 - 15/40 line?
Brent Hershey
12:49
It's possible -- would still be near the top of his outcomes (especially that BA). But ride it.

encouraging starts from Severino and Gore yesterday. How confident are you that these two will be viable SPs moving forward?
