Good Noon (on the East), fantasy baseball folk. Always great to log onto a full queue—but we still got room, and I"ll try to get to as many of these as I can. Reminder that some brief context to your question always helps (format, scoring, league depth, keeper/redraft, etc). That said, let's go!

Clarke Schmidt had a much better outing on Sunday, in Yankee Stadium and against the powerful Blue Jays, he came unraveled with the Volpe error, otherwise, who knows.  What did he do differently on Sunday that was working?  I suspect this is the Schmidt managers were expecting.  Thoughts going forward? Thank you.
Brent Hershey

Yep, good reminder to not bail too quickly on these talented youngsters if possible. One factor: even though it's a strong TOR lineup, it's heavily skewed w RH bats. Schmidt's learning edge is finding a way to retire lefties; which that new cutter was supposed to do. I'm still cautiously optimistic here, but will be trying to remember opponent handedness for my Schmidt sit/start decisions here for a bit. Good question!

As always, thank you for these chats! I have an opening for a hitter & a pitcher in an NL 10 team 5x5
Oops! Hit send too soon! carpenter or Barrera or G Stone, Hampson or Mathias?   Lucchesi, Estrada or R Nelson?
Brent Hershey
12:09
If it's one from each group, then Carpenter and Lucchesi

How good can Logan Allen (CLE) be this year?
Brent Hershey
12:12
Always a bit wary of rookie SP, but he's got a lot of good things going for him -- stuff, metrics, a team that's decent offensively and behind him AND who has had big success in developing pitchers. Could have some success as a mid-rotation starter type in real life. Not crazy to say he'd out-earn Mason Miller rest of season when one considers workload, win potential, etc.

Brent, did Yu Chang just have a lucky week, or is there the heartbeat of a solidly mediocre player lurking there?
Brent Hershey
12:16
I'm watching a bit; Chang has shown better Statcast metrics than one might realize in his past, but has just not quite found the PT. Dunno if that will happen here in BOS, and it's not a star profile or anything, but could be a sneaky good add depending on league depth etc

Do you see anything that makes you think Kopech can become a #3 or better starter? How about Bello?
Brent Hershey
12:18
Think a #3 is his ceiling. Some OK signs this year - velo, SwK are up, but walks are too. Think he's headed towards a frustratingly inconsistent career. Big Bello fan, but really need to see more of him at the MLB level. Rough first week obviously.

Hi, Brent. I'm in a H2H, Daily/Mixed (12 team) League where having an elite RP who qualifies as a SP can have quite a bit of value. I have Matt Brash slotted in that role for me currently, but the "kid" has been quite erratic to start the season. Should I execute a bit more patience?
Brent Hershey
12:21
Yes, you should ... underlying metrics (walk/strikeout ratios; BABIP) point to a big rebound at some point. Sounds like could be an impact guy for you if you can wait out the correction.

What are your thoughts about De La Cruz and Jose Abreu for the rest of the year for a 5x5 mixed 12 team league?
Brent Hershey
12:26
Crazy that Abreu is homer-less, but his quality of contact numbers are way down. I was one who was a big advocate for a HOU-fueled rebound, but right now things look bleak. It's early, but I'd be concerned.
De La Cruz is the flip-side ... pummeling the ball. I've been most excited about MIA playing him every day. The park and surrounding lineup are not really favorable, but he's a riser for me as long as his hard-hit rates, etc are able to overcome all the Ks.

Why so few comments about Colin Rea to date? Is he worth rostering?
Brent Hershey
12:27
Lack of strikeouts and lack of track record, teeny MLB sample so far after spending the past few years overseas. Matchup/filler play in deep leagues, can safely ignore otherwise.

Should I look to move Juan Soto in my dynasty league? Who would you accept in return for him?
Brent Hershey
12:33
There's no way to answer that second question - but I will say that you might want to at least explore the first. The problem is that you're selling low ... but this past week was the first where I really considered that perhaps he won't get it turned around, at least in the short term. His quotes to Ken Rosenthal in an article in The Athletic regarding lineup position preferences were interesting (and I'm being kind) given the world-class lineup he's a part of. Hopefully I'm wrong.

As painful as a dead spot in the lineup might be, is it best to just plug in an inactive pitcher than risk Martin Perez (@Cin, NYY) this week?
Brent Hershey
12:35
You might be overthinking it; our numbers for the Perez 2-step are not terrible. The thing w/ Cincy is the lineup is not good and MP gets a fair number of ground balls. Could go either way.

There are some whispers that Estrada (CHC) may emerge as the closer. Are you hearing anything?
Brent Hershey
12:37
No Cubs insider info, sorry. BUT ... Estrada has been hailed by us and others for having the skills to do it at some point. But purely a stash play at this point, even with the CL struggles there.

Hey, hey Brent! I have a good problem on my hands when it comes to my BP this year. We can start up to 4 RP in my daily h2h league and I currently have Clase/Duran/DWill/Alvarado in those spots with both Munoz and Joyce in my reserves (deep bench). Am I silly for wanting to shop Munoz as he inches closer to coming off the IL? This is a keeper league, so I’m always afraid to trading away the next elite closer, but there seems to be some ongoing injury risk with him. Thoughts?

Thanks!!
Brent Hershey
12:39
Not silly to me with the depth you have there. You've ALREADY got several current and possibly future elite closers; looking to trade away a high-skilled but high-injury risk RP sounds like a good plan. Good luck!

Quick quest. for you, Brent! After Lodolo got SHELLED in his last start, I think there's a brief buy-low opportunity for him in my keeper league (12 tm/mixed). Should I make my move? I think my boy has ace potential!
Brent Hershey
12:40
Yep; I'd explore that. Many more positives so far than negatives.
Rob
12:40
Who's the better option for dynasty (holds count too)? Ranger Suarez,  Clarke Schmidt, or Vesia from LAD?
Brent Hershey
12:40
Schmidt, fairly easily
Bob
12:42
Would you replace Garret Mitchell with Mitch Keller, Johan Oviedo or Tajuan Walker?
Brent Hershey
12:42
Tossup for me between the two Pirates (amazingly). Keller safer (esp if it's a redraft); Oviedo probably a bit higher upside (and likely the smarter keeper-lg option)
Bob
12:44
What do you expect for Mitch Haniger ROS?
Brent Hershey
12:44
Maybe 4 months of what we usually see from him: .250 plus power with an injury risk asterisk.

4x4 keeper league AL only. is josh lowe for real?  will Brennan upside long term? Thank you
Brent Hershey
12:45
I'm inching towards Yes to this Lowe question. Like Brennan some, but not sure he becomes a star or anything. Not a huge carrying tool; more of a solid all-around corner OF.

Small sample size but do you see any possible breakouts or at least potential in deep leagues with                                     M Tonkin : IP 12 K-BB% 24, SwK% 13.3 GB% 45     M Thompson: IP 16 K-BB% 21, Swk 13.2 GB % 41                         A. Young:  IP 10  K-BB 30, SwK 27.3 , GB% 52
Brent Hershey
12:47
Thompson interests me the most -- but again, in deep leagues only.

Who do you like best of the CLE Pitching Prospects (L. Allen, T. Bibee, G. Williams) for 2023 and as Keeper prospects (4x4 Roto, 12 team AL-Only).  It seems Bibee and Williams are the higher ceilings, but Allen got the call.  How will C. Morris fit in once he's back?  Thank you.
Brent Hershey
12:49
Tough calls; here's my shot:
2023: Allen, Bibee, Williams.
Keepers: Bibee, Williams, Allen
With all the CLE depth, and Morris' injury history, my hunch says he ends up in relief.
