Priceless

Can we conclude that David Price just doesn't have what it takes to be successful in the postseason?
august fagerstrom
12:44
Price, career, regular season: 23 K%, 6 BB%, 44 GB%
Price, career, postseason: 22 K%, 5 BB%, 46 GB%
no, we cannot conclude that at all. David Price is David Price, which is one of the best pitchers in the world, no matter when he is pitching

Everyone knows it's really the Jordan Bastian Bowl
august fagerstrom
12:45
This is a good point.

12:45
The Cubs "have the best team in baseball"? Don't have such a big head, august.
august fagerstrom
12:46
literally have no idea what this means

Who do you think has the most obnoxious fans? As a rational jays fan I'm starting understand that with all the beer can throwing and large Internet presence we are starting to move up the obnoxious fans latter but I still think Giants fans and to a lesser extent O's fans are the worst
august fagerstrom
12:47
I don't think any fanbase is characteristically more obnoxious than another. That's painting with a pretty broad brush. From the perspective of a FanGraphs writer, the most obnoxious fanbase is whichever one is most outperforming their projections in that given season
They seem to somehow feel personally slighted by the authors or the website, when the authors/website are just relaying the information provided to them by math and computes. What they're actually feeling personally slighted by is an emotionless algorithm, which is a bizarre stance to take

Does Heyward make that play off the Gillaspie hit, or was that simply unreachable?
august fagerstrom
12:48
Can't expect anyone to catch that ball
Eric
12:48
Since the Dodgers need two wins, what's the difference if Kershaw starts game 4 or 5? They need another starter either way. Might as well hold him back and pitch him on full rest.
august fagerstrom
12:48
there's this, too
BumMad
12:50
True or false: the late-inning heroics of the Giants' offense saved last night from tarnishing Bumgardner's legendary playoff rep.
august fagerstrom
12:51
In some ways, Bumgarner's legend is already cemented
There's no tarnishing what he did in 2014
But either way, no, it'll take a lot more than one mediocre start to tarnish whatever bit of his legacy is even possible to be tarnished

Could it be an arguement that jose ramirez is cle mvp througout the season. Fills in and all he did was hit, play good defense, and steal.
august fagerstrom
12:52
Depending on how much you care about context and timing, yeah, you could probably make that argument

"legitimate World Series" roster just means there's a lot of OH I KNOW THAT NAME HE'S GOOD players that the majority of fans of heard of mixed with a bunch of OH WOW I DIDN'T KNOW THAT GUY EXISTED HE'S GOOD players.
august fagerstrom
12:53
no, it means they have a really good roster
which I guess is kind of what your comment implied?

Favourite Tame Impala album?
august fagerstrom

Lonerism>Currents>Innerspeaker, but they're all pretty incredible
Alex
12:54
Could you see my Red Sox making a run at Matt Kemp to replace Papi?
august fagerstrom
12:55
There are many more ways to improve the Red Sox than by adding Matt Kemp
Matt Damon
12:56
MATT. DAMON.

Re Ortiz in the 2014 playoffs -- more to the point, Papi won ALCS Game 4 with a walk-off HR in the 12th, tied Game 5 with a HR in the 8th and won it in with a walk-off RBI in the 14th. Legendary moments.

His HR rate and K% are what they are, would the perception (right or wrong) be any different about Josh Tomlin if he were left handed? People seem to "value" soft tossing lefties that pitch like Tomlin but because Tomlin is right handed, he seems to get less cred. I know Jamie Moyer's changeup was good and he was more adept at keeping the ball in the yard, but does he get more love than Tomlin because he was left handed? Tomlin's command has to be one of the higher grades in baseball.
august fagerstrom
12:57
This is actually a fantastic question
I've never thought about it that way, but yeah, I could totally see Tomlin being viewed in a different light were he left-handed
12:59
It's also possible that the perception of him doesn't differ much from the reality. After all, we're talking about a guy with a 103 ERA- since getting healthy again in 2014

I know what it means, I just meant to most baseball commentators who use the term "legitimate World Series roster"
august fagerstrom

Gotcha

True or False, Cleveland will live or die with Miller.
august fagerstrom
1:01
Baseball teams don't ever live or die with one player, but yeah, Miller's probably the most important player on the Indians
Matt

EE will replace Papi. Seems Soxian, no?
august fagerstrom
1:02
IDK, a part of me thinks the Red Sox might be looking forward to not being hamstrung by having two full-time 1B/DH types on their roster anymore
Just because one DH leaves doesn't mean you have to go get another
