it's February!
we'll chat at noon
11:49
chat soundtrack: Pixies - Come On Pilgrim
and then probably also Surfer Rosa because Come on Pilgrim is so short but damn if that's not one of the best EP's ever

Are you the prospect guy or just the weird name guy? I forget.
august fagerstrom
12:02
weird name guy only

Great music choice. Just spent my morning with Surfer Rosa!

Is Andrew Cashner a fit for the Orioles? What would it take to get him, if so?
august fagerstrom
12:05
absolutely, and it shouldn't take too much. he's a FA next year, owed $7M this year coming off a season in which he had a -1 RA9-WAR
he's obviously much better than that with considerable upside, but he doesn't have immense trade value

The Ian Kennedy contract keeps getting worse and worse. A $6M buyout if he decides to opt-out? What?
august fagerstrom
12:08
yeah, it's definitely a bad contract. I've been thinking about it, though, and in a perhaps misguided way, I can kind of see where the Royals are coming from, if they truly think they're going back in the tank when Hosmer/Cain/Moustakas/everybody walks after 2017. I mean, if he's not good, and they're saddled with the contract through the rebuilding years, they might just... not care? and if he's good and walks, then he's good during the time that they want good players?
I don't know, that's probably not a good way of thinking about it, and the Royals probably aren't / shouldn't plan on just being bad starting in 2018
but it's maybe a way to rationalize it?
there's gotta be rationalization in there somewhere
Stu
12:09
Surely, the Royals are shaking in their boots as the Indians have signed 34 year old Napoli, 35 year old Rajai, and now possibly 37 year old Uribe? And they wonder why fans dont go to games
august fagerstrom
12:09
got a pretty good roster in a division that seems pretty up for grabs

12:09
besides inventing a time machine to go back and try harder to sign upton/cespedes, what do the white sox do?
august fagerstrom
12:10
sounds like Andre Ethier, which would be a nice fit, though it wouldn't do a ton to help that whole "putrid outfield defense" thing
then again, neither might Fowler. or Upton
Richard
12:10
What are your expectations for Steven Souza this year? Is he a 20/20 guy? Does Dickerson's arrival dampen his stock?
august fagerstrom
12:11
yeah, Souza's probably going to start the year in the minors and needs an injury or something to get the call back up
Guyer definitely leapfrogged him in the pecking order last year, and obviously Kiermaier/Dickerson/Jennings/Pearce are above him on the outfield depth chart. He's their 5th outfielder
Matt
12:12
If a short stop fielded every ball perfectly that was in the upper limit of possible range, how many wins is that worth?
august fagerstrom
12:13
depends on your definition of "possible range" but I'd guess 5 wins? Andrelton's peaked at ~3 so far and I can't imagine there's *too* many he's missing out on
The Other Sox
12:13
Is there anyone the White Sox can sign to make them the favorites in the AL Central?
august fagerstrom
12:14
not at this point, no, but the division looks to be so up for grabs that their spot on the win curve could make any addition pretty impactful
Raindog
12:14
True or false: the difference in expected production between Fowler and Austin Jackson will not be worth the difference in money they get + a draft pick.
august fagerstrom
12:14
prooooobably true

Over/under on Hyun-soo Kim this season: 0.7 WAR

12:17
When do you think the ETAs of the Nationals: Turner, Giolito, Robles and Lopez may be?
august fagerstrom
12:17
Turner's the closest. Could even crack Opening Day but I kinda doubt it
Giolito's arrival depends on health of current rotation. They'd probably like to exercise caution but if something happens I could see him being up fairly quick too
12:18
Don't know much about Robles and Lopez but they seem to be further off
Trystan
12:18
Would Papelbon be worse than Trump?
august fagerstrom
12:18
at being the President?
yeah

If you were to theoretically line up Goldy/Votto's careers once they are done, who has the advantage as a hitter for each season in which they were the same age? So far, their 25-27 years are fairly similar.
