ok, let us begin
12:15
while listening to Andre Benjamin:
Borkmeisel
12:16
Hello, friend!
august fagerstrom
12:16
hello, Bork!
The Lure of the Animal
12:16
Any idea on why a lot of guys with middling power like Galvis are doubling and tripling their HR totals, while most traditional heavy hitters like Trout aren't experiencing a significant bump?
august fagerstrom
12:18
Not a great one, no, but it *does* seem to lend some credence to the thought that maybe this sudden power spike has more to do with coaching/process than anything else. It does seem that many of these guys hitting for more power/loft than we expected -- Altuve, Betts, Bregman, Dozier, etc -- are smaller guys, and maybe that's something teams have realized, that small guys can be power hitters too, as long as their swing is right
Still doesn't explain the fact that the home run spike was so sudden after the All-Star Break, and it's not like every coaching staff came up with the idea to get their small guys to create loft all at once last July
But the home run spike doesn't have to be explained by just one thing
12:19
I think coaching has a lot to do with it
Edward Van Halen
12:20
Clayton Kershaw has regained the MLB lead in SP WAR. Is he your Cy Young?
august fagerstrom
12:21
As far as I know, there's no innings/qualification restriction for the Cy Young, so it'll be a fascinating argument
12:22
I... kinda think so?
It's funny, for as much talk as there's been about the AL Cy Young pool being ambiguous, the NL candidates might be equally so
12:23
There's not much clear separation between Scherzer/Fernandez/Syndergaard, and the case for Hendricks probably isn't too crazy
Kershaw has obviously been the most impressive of the three
Mike_C
12:24
Dansby Swanson is currently slashing 305/358/421 while posting a wRC+ of 98. Am I just missing something or is that really a below league average slash-line now?
august fagerstrom
12:24
It's above-average on-base and below-average power
That OBP is 28 points above league-average. The ISO is 49 points below league average. About evens out.
nelson
12:26
Will Mike clevinger ever cut down on all these walks?
august fagerstrom
12:26
Ever? He's thrown 45 major league innings. It's not like he's running out of time
This year? This year's a different question

Your favorite Brian Eno album?
august fagerstrom
12:29
his work with Talking Heads/Bowie is my favorite stuff he's worked on
12:30
as far as solo stuff I'm a fan of Another Green World, though I admittedly haven't listened to as much of his discography as I probably should
matt
12:31
are home runs per plate appearance up? or just the total number of home runs?
august fagerstrom
12:31
home runs per plate appearance are the highest they've ever been, ever
tied with 2000
that's home runs per hit
my initial statement may have been a lie
it's close, though
Alex
12:33
Was listening to BP Mets podcast and they brought up an interesting point, relevant today for Lugo and Gsellman. They mentioned that the Mets pitcher development is crazy unique (in a positive way) in that you can look at a Mets minor league pitcher evaluation and simply say that when they reach the majors, they will add 2-3 mph on the fastball and add a plus slider. The thought of this seems crazy, but looking back at Matz, Harvey, Degrom, Thor, Gsellman and now lugo, this notion might not be so crazy. What do you think?
august fagerstrom
12:34
the "add 3 mph and a plus slider" is probably a bit of a generalization, but it's not a generalization to say the Mets appear to have gotten very good at developing pitchers
and obviously Warthen has a reputation for teaching the slider
they haven't done a great job of keeping them healthy, though, and that can be just as important

ESPN has an article about Epstein up today. Epstein said that acquiring Chapman raised their World Series odds, based on their own modeling from "less than one in five" to "slightly less than 1 in 4". Aroldis Chapman, 5% of a World Series title? Now we know why they made that trade.

I'll do it since nobody else will. Bumgarner is a douche. Deshields, Gomez, Puig, Guerrero, Heyward, Myers. All guys who's barked at the last season or so because they don't play the game to Bumgarners sensibilities. He deserves a little old fashioned chin music, if you ask me.

Is it crazy to see the 2017 A's as a wildcard playoff team? They've looked like the Giants of late, with non-heralded prospects (Healy, Wendle, Cotton, Mengden) coming up and immediately slotting in on a regular basis as above-average players. Then you've got Khris Davis with 40 HR and still more prospects to come...

At the end of a season, Arod heading into his last inning of his at bats, was sitting at 28 home runs and 93 RBIs. In that inning, he hit a grand slam and a 3 run homer, getting to exactly 30 homers and 100 rbis to keep that streak going. fun fact

how unique is Kevin Kiermaier? How rare are his defensive skills? Are players like him changing the way teams scout CF prospects? Seems like defensive stats are getting more robust, but I imagine they are hard to gather for college players, and obv high schoolers. it'll be interesting to the age curve on his defensive skills...

Dude rocked over the left field wall a perfectly spotted 98mph fastball knee high on the outside corner, then smacked into the left field corner a perfectly spotted 93mph slider on the outside corner and well below the zone. Dude is on fire.

Gary Sanchez now leads all AL position players in WAR and has a slightly higher WAR than Fulmer (0.1). Is it possible that a 2 month guy can convince the voters that he should be ROY? Also, considering a total season has the ability to pull value back as players regress, would it be fair?

Seems odd to me that in all the NL CY talk, Jon Lester is often left out of the conversation. Do you think that's because (like Hendricks) doesn't have the strikeout numbers of the assumed frontrunners, or (like Hendricks) people are discounting his performance because of the defense behind him?

I was just browsing league stats from year to year and noticed that the average WAR for a team's position players has been stable at 19.0 WAR +/- 0.0 for 40 years which is when I stopped looking. Since MLB expanded and added TB and AZ the league's position players have totaled between 569 and 571 WAR annually. Basically a 9-10 WAR player gets his team half-way to having an average roster of position players by himself. I have no point to make, just an observation.

Why do FG writers and saber writers, in general, get so snarky when they're questioned on their opinions? If a better understanding of how baseball works and what metrics should be tracked to measure which things is the ultimate goal, then shouldn't you welcome differing viewpoints?

Sidenote to your (great) article on Roark. He's tied for second in baseball with hit batters. I'm under the impression that if he messes up his sinker for one pitch and doesn't get the armside run that he depends on for called strikes, it goes right into an LHB's hip

What are the players of this generation that won't make the HOF but were great and our kids will have to ask us about? For example, my uncle's favorite player growing up was Cesar Cedeno. When he told me this (I was about 15, now 22), I had never heard of him and looked him up. I'm thinking Adrian Gonzalez might get lost in the shuffle.
