Good Monday, all! Thanks for coming out and/or leaving a question, got some good ones lined up but always room for more. In four short weeks, we'll be in spring training mode. Let's go for now with what we've got ...
12:03
Actually had this question from last week, saw it late and punted until now: "Hey Brent, love the site and content. I tend to be a Mayberry Method user. Just wondering if there is a right way or wrong way to use it. What else should I be using to separate players and ultimately rank them?"
Brent Hershey
12:06
Wouldn't say there's a 'wrong' way to use it. It serves as a great short-cut look into a player's skills, once you know which each digit stands for. So, can be used both in prep for a draft/auction, say if you group together similar types of players -- or, in-draft ("I know I'm behind on speed, who are the best remaining SB options,' etc). Like most useful tools, knowing their purpose and practicing with them lets you hone your own process. Mayberry tries to also fold in playing time, which is helpful in a big-picture way. Hope this helps; it is a wonderful tool for sure.

When will the new MACK be ready?
Brent Hershey
12:12
Quick explainer: MACK is BaseballHQ's fantasy team tracker that has been in need of an update/refresh for ... let's just say awhile. BHQ is undergoing a facelift this offseason (in heavy testing right now) and a MACK-like tool will be part of the 'new' site. Hate to cop out, but "very soon" is as good as we can do, given where we are in the calendar. Not ruling out a pre-Opening Day release, but not promising it, either. We want to be sure that all the tools and other functions for Draft Season are in the best shape possible. It's very exciting, though; stay tuned!

Happy Monday Brent! In a dynasty 5x5 OBP league. The variability of some of my keepers is giving me angina. I can’t figure out if I’m one player away from actually competing. My pitching is dynamic but my hitting is a gigantic question mark with players like Gelof, N Jones, J Walker, etc. It’s the second year of a rebuild. At what point do you make the decision it’s time to go for it?
Brent Hershey
12:15
If that's your foundational 'core', then I'd probably keep building as best you can, just b/c none of those players have done it over a full MLB season. On the other hand, those ARE the types of players you need to have blossom, and right now it's better than relying on a team of rookie hitters, even top ones. If you have some other foundational pieces in place, and these are your next guys up ... then  it would seem that you're certainly close. But for dynasty, you are always balancing the now and later, of course. Good luck!

What is Pressley's role?  Set up, co-closer, trade bait?
Brent Hershey
12:18
Ugh; those of us drafting early (and who have rostered Pressly) got bit for sure. It sure sounds like he's going to be Hader's top setup guy; would think he'd still get a stray save or 5 barring injury. The upside is he's certainly the no-doubt #2 should something happen to Hader. In real life, I highly doubt that he's trade bait. HOU obv wants to build an elite back-end bullpen .. and that they have.

Auction philosophy question.
10 team, NL only, Roto, auction, keeper league.
Brent,
Would like your approach/philosophy on when/how to nominate your “sleeper” candidates in an auction to try and get them at a cheap price.
·      Do you throw out their names early in the draft hoping teams will hold their dollar/positions for top tier players?
·      Do you wait for the middle rounds, hope teams has gone to sleep and sneak your guy through?
·      Do you hold until dollar days, watching team budgets/ open positions and hoping no one throws out your guys and you cannot over bid?
·      Do you try to hold onto “the hammer” at the end, meaning keep more dollars at the end to bid with and risk leaving dollars on the table at the end?
Really enjoy BBHQ & your Monday chats!!! Thank You!!!

Rule 1: If at all possible, know your room/competitors. As a keeper league, take whatever knowledge/tendenices the other teams have given you in past years and adjust your choices from there.
Any one -- or several -- of these can work. The one I've personally had the least success with is #2 - trying to sneak guys through in the middle rounds. Unless it's a deep position and/or you're sure that your competitor's evals are different than your own. I'll also say that for the end game, I'd prefer to have the hammer, but also be really flexible/willing to move off that when necessary - again, to avoid leaving $ on the table.
Lastly ... if doing that hammer strategy, don't worry about going 'over value' if you have the room and you find yourself unexpectedly in a bidding war over a certain player. If he's your guy, and you got the cash, spend it -- even if everyone chuckles at the end b/c he's wildly overpriced. Unless you're taking 2024, that shouldn't matter if you believe in that player. Get your guy.

Thoughts on reranking Henry Davis with him potentially regaining catcher eligibility (assuming Pittsburgh follows through on what they’ve said). He remains off most catcher lists and I’m assuming his value goes up as a C/OF. Also, that hand injury should be healed.
Brent Hershey
12:27
Yes, I find him totally in that deep, acceptable CA2 pool. Came up with a hitters pedigree, didn't hit the ground running as expected, but now—as long as you can 'stash' him in the OF for a couple weeks--I like him as a sneaky CA play. But in drafts I've been in, others have thought the same. Don't feel like, however, that he's at the CA1 level just yet. And no, not worried about the hand injury.

Brent, Can you give us some updates on the Baseball HQ website changes?
Brent Hershey
12:30
Thanks for the question and your subscription! Covered it some above, but having the site be mobile-friendly is one of the biggest things we're excited about. Frankly, it's also a challenge given our data- and table-heavy focus at times, but excited about where we'll end up. Will be a bit of a learning curve for subs (as always of any new site), but we're trying to minimize that and will be available in different forms to introduce subscribers to new features and where to find things. Can't wait!

How likely is the scenario: Bobby Miller ends 2024 as a top 10 SP?
Brent Hershey
12:34
I do think it's possible; there are lots of things stacked in his favor. The stuff, of course, which we all saw last year, but also the possibility, given his team context, of running off mid-teens wins. Not a given, but a possibility -- which if it happens, will push his seasonal value very high. Also the fact that he could go as high as 170-180 IP - again, possibilities - is something in his favor.

NL only 5x5. I used to troll 6th starters who would eventually find their way into the rotation in the end game. But they're a pretty risky proposition. I'm thinking that there's new pitcher value in 80-100 IP guys who get 100K, put up decent peripherals, and notch a half dozen wins. Last year I got Nick Martinez for a buck, and he delivered very nice value.
Any speculation on an NL guy or two who might fit that profile this year?
Brent Hershey
12:37
Kerkering, but he's not really flying under the radar and is more of a back-end guy. But maybe Matt Strahm? ReyLopez in ATL; Hicks now in SF. Would try to target, when possible, guys on good teams for this role (better W potential). Kyle Hurt in LA, maybe? Fun exercise.

Roster decision time on Nootbaar. Can he be a candidate for a minor breakout now that there is somewhat less OF competition in ST L or will his splits against LHP be limiting? Our league does not score OBP.
Brent Hershey
12:39
Yeah, I think there could be another step up for Nootbaar (I think you're reading this correctly). And yes, some risk again LHP, but there were stretches last year when he played against most LHP. No problem on holding on here.

chances Tyler Oneil puts up a profitable season after this change of scenery?
Brent Hershey
12:42
Frankly, would kinda prefer change-of-body more than change-of-scenery, just in mitigating some of his injury risk. And not to say he wasn't being (it seemed) scapegoated in STL ... but just that his chances of a profitable season are much more tied to him staying on the field than WHAT field he's playing on. He stays healthy ... he'll be profitable.

Do you trust Carrol, Witt and Tatis as first rounders in re-draft this year? (5x5)
Brent Hershey
12:44
Yes ... I really think Carroll COULD put up an Acuna-Lite line this season, and Witt is close to that, also. Tatis is a bit more risky, but with a full year of RF under his belt, with his youth and skillset, yes I think he can still return 1st round value. Definitely third on this list, though; highest risk factor for me.

Is Yordan the biggest value in the top 12-15 picks right now?
Brent Hershey
12:46
Could see this, yes. I still think he has a 50-HR, .300 BA season in him. Like others, health has to cooperate, but great lineup around him means IF plays 150 games, counting stats should explode in addition to the above. Just a feared all-around hitter.

  • 15 team, mixed. 6x6, where holds & saves are separate categories. Down to my last freeze. C. Martin Taylor Rogers or Alek Thomas? My concern over Thomas is PT & lack of skills. Thank you
Brent Hershey
12:52
Would prefer Martin to Rogers, even with his age risk. For now, with Kenley in front of him, holds should be there, and saves could, too, if Kenley get moved at some point. But feel like Thomas is a better bet than both ... you don't say how many keepers but if these guys are your last ones, I'm thinking Thomas is your 3d or so OFer? He's young, looked pretty good in the playoffs, great D in center. Yeah, might sit against some lefties and skills aren't eye-popping, but could see him as an accumulator who take a small step up. Would probably lean that way.

Is it wrong to want to roster the entire SEA rotation this year regardless of format?
Brent Hershey
12:53
Ha .. nope. All are very good options, even at different points in the draft. SEA got some good things cooking in the pitching development department.
Greg
12:56
Thoughts on Luis Robert.  Will he put it all together or is he going to be one of those guys that is injury plagued and never quite come together as we think he should?
Brent Hershey
12:56
The injuries have kept me away, and last year was the first that it "burned" me (or, just that he was far more useful than my pre-season eval). Also had a lot of things go right for him ... but is still just 26. I'm likely still out ('prove it to me again'), but admit that I could eat my words again this time next year. Individual skills there for a superstar season, for sure.

Kebryan Hayes looked intriguing down the stretch lasy year, any chance of him putting up a 265 20/20 line? Not a bad speculation for a buck at the auction table!
Brent Hershey
12:58
Yep, love this. Made launch-angle strides coming back from injury, has always hit the ball hard -- really interested to see what he can do  over a full season. Think the BA could be even higher than you have here. Would love him for a buck in just about any league.

Welcome back.  Some decisions need to be made for cutting my AL scoresheet down to 35…rank these prospects in order of preference to keep:  Spencer Jones, Roman Anthony, Gabriel Gonzalez, Michael Arroyo, George Valera, Danny Espino, David Sandlin, Spencer Arrighetti, Emmanuel Rodriguez.  Thanks!
Brent Hershey
1:01
Yes, Scoresheet! My rank is Anthony, Jones, Rodriguez, Gonzalez, Arroyo, Valera, Espino, Sandlin, Arrighetti. Clear 1-2 for me, then less separation between the rest. Espino probably best overall talent here, but injury risk just too high, sadly. Good luck!

Who are a couple of bounce back candidates you like this year!?
Brent Hershey

Let's do 3 in each league ...
NL - Kelenic, Arenado, Trevor Rogers
AL - J Peña, Fedde, M Andujár
