Why are the Pirates ridiculously bad on the basepaths? It’s mind boggling how often they run themselves out of runs! Is this a Hurdle thing?
Bill Brink
12:37
It is mind-boggling because the coaching staff goes through baserunning mistakes with the players after they happen, so you'd think the message would get through. This year hasn't been as egregiously bad, from the eye test, as previous years, but there are still mental errors.

Would it be any real surprise if the Bucs had a quiet offseason with just adding, or keeping a veteran SS, a leftie bullpen arm and the aforementioned minor league free agent OF?
Bill Brink
12:37
Given the fact that they did not sign a major league free agent last winter, no, that would not be a surprise.

Seems like replay is going quicker in the playoffs. Did MLB make some kind of change?
Bill Brink
12:38
No massive change that I'm aware of, though they're always trying to streamline the process. With only one game going at a time, too, it's easier for the umpires in the NYC replay command center to examine potential plays even while the manager is considering a challenge.

If Keller is ready for the big leagues, what does that mean for Nova?
Bill Brink
12:39
This is one of those cross that bridge when you get to it situations. Who knows when Keller is ready, who's healthy at that time, who's performing or not performing.
12:40
Lightning round. Go.

Any thoughts on Josh Bell's power regression and what HR #s are the real ones - 2017 or 2018?
Bill Brink
12:42
Lack of commitment to an approach, not handling hard stuff inside as well, focusing on swing rather than timing. I think 20+ is still in the tank.

Starting SS next year
Bill Brink
12:42
Um. Mercer?
Mark
12:42
Does either Mercer or JHay return next year?
Bill Brink
12:42
Mercer more likely than Harrison.

Will you keep pressing for specifics to Bob Nutting when you interview him about where the $50 million dollars from Disney BAM went please? He should use most of that and get us a power bat or 2 here.
Bill Brink
12:47
Will do. For me, the thing with the BAM money is not that most or all of it should go to payroll -- not many other teams did that, or at least said it publicly, and I don't know that a one- or two-year spike in payroll makes sense -- but that an owner with a reputation regarding money among fans has been loath to give any details about how the club used it.

Any suggestions of a power hitter who is available as a free agent that might be affordable for the Pirates?
Bill Brink
12:47
Matt Adams, DJ LeMahieu (ish, for a 2B), Brian Dozier, Donaldson, Michael Brantley.
12:48
Thanks for all the participation this year, everyone. Enjoy the playoffs. I'd imagine we'll do this again around the winter meetings.
