Hey Bill, do you think the bucs will use the extra money to get to where the payroll has been the last couple years or will they stay around where they are now??
Bill Brink
12:31
I think they need too much to stand pat if they want to contend. They need an answer at short, they need a lefty reliever and they might need another starter.

What is the wait on getting the LHP for the bullpen? Plenty of arms out there and I don't think Pirates going after the big named ones
Jeremy jordan
12:32
Any knowledge of the pirates talking to any LHP or SS
Bill Brink
12:33
I've spoken to people who are surprised they haven't checked in on certain SSs and LHPs, but I do think they get a lefty between now and opening day. There's no rush yet; the offseason doesn't end after the Rule 5.

What percent chance do you think the Pirates actually reinvest the savings from Nova, Harrison, Mercer, and Freese? Or will we see payroll drop for the 3rf straight year?
Raven Hater
12:34
Nova’s savings??   Already spent?  If so, can we expect any return this year from this trade?
Clark
12:34
Regarding Huntingdon's comments regarding already using some of that savings--that sounds to me like they were already over a budgeted amount with the prior signings, and this trade is to free up some more of that money. Is that a fair read in your opinion? Already spending savings that weren't there yet implies overspending to me.
Bill Brink
12:36
Similar questions, so I'll address them together. I think Clark's point is a fair read, given the drop in attendance and its corresponding effect on revenue, and the way the front office chooses to allocate that revenue. I think it's possible they spend more, but it would not shock me if they didn't, and remember: Huntington's job is to allocate the money he's given. He can't spend money that ownership doesn't give him.

Any talk of extending Dickerson>
Bill Brink
12:37
None that I've heard yet but it would make sense. He fits in well and produces. But the Pirates also have Reynolds and Martin in the minors.
Tony Ritz
12:37
With the addition of Lyles and if he was to be in the bullpen and not 5th starter where do you rank the pirates bullpen among the mlb right now? I find it really strong
Bill Brink
12:37
That back four of Vazquez, Kela, Crick and Rodriguez is really strong. Brault and Kingham as swingmen could go either way. A lot depends on who that final piece is.
Nyger M.
12:37
Do you really think the Pirates are comfortable with Erik Gonzalez and Kevin Newman as their short stops to start the season?
Bill Brink
12:39
I have yet to see Gonzalez play, though I've heard good things from those who have. I don't think they'd be comfortable with Newman alone. I still think they look for help.
dane

Is the depth chart today: Newman SS, Kramer 2B and Chisenhall RF?
Bill Brink
12:39
Frazier at second and I bet Gonzalez gets first crack at short.
Frank
12:40
Chisenhall a back up st first base?
Bill Brink
12:40
He's played a little bit there, so maybe, but that could also be Osuna.

Robert Murray reports that "Pittsburgh will give Lyles a chance to start." Do you think this means as a full rotation member or a spot starter / opener?
Bill Brink
12:40
I heard the same yesterday, and for now I believe it means full rotation member.
On the Bill Brink
12:40
If the Pirates do not add any more payroll, were the Kela and Archer trades pointless?
Bill Brink
12:41
No, because they still have both players for a few more years.
On the Bill Brink
12:41
Were you surprised Cutch got 3/50?
Bill Brink
12:41
A little bit, not because of anything he did or didn't do but because of how last year's free-agent market played out for players his age.
dane
12:41
Who is the next primetime OF prospect? The guy from AA who was part of Cole deal?
Bill Brink
12:41
Jason Martin (who briefly got to triple-A) and Bryan Reynolds are the two who come to mind.

I am curious about the plan to replace Polanco in right field until he is really ready to return.  I honestly don't think that player is on the 40 man roster now.  Has anyone been linked, and I'm guessing the answer is going to be "Chisenhall."
Bill Brink
12:42
I hate to disappoint you, but I think it's Chisenhall.
Ethan
12:42
What’s the likelihood of the Pirates adding a major league bat, say Jed Lowrie or a similar player?
Griz
12:42
What are the chances of the Buccos going after Brian Dozier with the Nova money?
Bill Brink
12:43
They sound ready to give Frazier the everyday second-base job.
Tyler
12:43
Are the pirates done making moves at the meetings?
On the Bill Brink
12:43
Buccos are done this week, right?
Bill Brink
12:44
Who knows? Things happen quickly when you get a thousand execs and agents in one building (actually it's two buildings, connected by a casino).

12:45
do you ever see MLB having a salary cap?  When you see what teams like Washington are spending and you see the Pirates trading Nova for a minor league player its hard to get excited about this season.
Bill Brink
12:45
I don't see any momentum toward that, especially when big-market owners have large TV deals helping their cause.

Bill, does NH have more latitude this off season from Nutting due to him turning down the Giants job? Do we know what type of promises were made to keep him here?
On the Bill Brink
12:45
Reading Pirate Twitter one would assume NH is terrible at his job, but SF was interested in him, so what is his reputation across the league?
dane
12:45
With all this talk about money and Huntington being hand-cuffed by ownership, why didn't he take that job w the SF Giants?? Seems like a no-brainer
