Blue Jays Outlook '23

Business decisions have to be factored into the overall equation, like it or not.

But, my counter might be that Guerrero's stock amongst the Jays fanbase isn't exactly high right now.  Trading him two seasons ago or even last year would've been a drastically unpopular move, but probably not now

Should the Jays try to trade Varsho for Gurriel and Moreno?
Mark P

Well, Gurriel is a free agent after the season, so such a deal technically can't happen.

There are also, uh, a few other reasons why the Diamondbacks wouldn't take that offer.

Do the Jays match up as a trading partner with the Guardians on Shane Bieber?
Mark P

Maybe not just Bieber, as the Guards also have a lot of young infielders that the Blue Jays might be interested in for their 2B/3B gaps.

To be very clear, Jose Ramirez is not available in these hypothetical Cleveland/Toronto talks.  Neither are the Naylor brothers, speaking of the "hometown hero" talk from earlier.  But getting one year of Bieber would cost the Jays something significant in return, and since the Guardians need outfielders, the Jays aren't exactly deep in that area themselves.

Could you imagine a massive McGriff/Fernandez for Alomar/Carter deal happening?  Say, Vlad/Bo for Soto/Tatis?  Or Kim instead of Tatis?  Dang, if only the Jays had taken Kim when he wanted to come here .... sigh.

I think the ship has sailed on acquiring Kim, as he was low-key San Diego's MVP last season.  But yeah, the Padres are a fun team to consider when it comes to thinking about wild blockbuster deals, though I'm still not sure if they'll actually move Soto

Who wins a championship first, Jays or Leafs?

Annnnnnnd that seems like an appropriately gloomy enough question to end the chat with.  Thanks to everyone for submitting your questions.  We went a bit longer than usual with this one since.....well, because I've got a bit more to say about the Blue Jays than other teams.

Stay tuned to MLBTR for more offseason outlooks, and the follow-up team chats.
