Goldschmidt won last year
12:00
Regardless, broader point still stands that it's not an easy thing to do at the bottom of the defensive spectrum. Essentially takes league-best offense
12:01
Olson's a very good hitter. He's never had Cabrera/Goldy caliber offensive numbers though

Most likely to win MVP this year on the Braves? They've got a lot of good players...
Anthony Franco
12:01
I'd go with Acuna, slightly above Riley
Chris
12:02
What's Allard's role? I was surprised when they traded to bring him back... Is he viewed as a bullpen piece or a potential starter?
Anthony Franco
12:02
Just a depth starter. Not a guarantee he holds his spot on the roster all year
Minor System
12:03
Seeing the consistent producing players that come from the Braves system makes me think the entire rating system is flawed. Braves don’t market it’s system out and they get rated poorly. Change my mind…

Should Braves fans be worried about the state of the farm system?

I don't buy the idea that prospect evaluators miss on the Braves because the organization doesn't like to promote their own players. Those publications are basing reports off other teams' evaluations of players within the system too. They're certainly cognizant of the reality that teams are incentivized to try to play up their own prospects. Even if the Braves truly aren't as inclined as some other teams to do that, the publications are adjusting for that
12:08
That said, a good player development pipeline can bridge the gap. Prospect projection isn't perfect obviously and helping a fifth-round pick like Strider develop into a top 15 MLB pitcher within two years of being drafted is something that prospect outlets aren't going to foresee. It just doesn't happen that often
12:09
So I think it can both be true that Atlanta's current farm system is not good but they're 1) great at the MLB level, which is what the overall goal and 2) have a better track record than the majority of other teams at getting the most of the players they bring up
12:10
Self-evaluation is a big part of that too. 18 months ago, it wasn't a consensus opinion that Michael Harris was better than Cristian Pache. The Braves clearly had those guys lined up that way though

Looking at the olson trade involving Shea, and the Murphy trade since they lost Shea…feels like the real cost of losing Freddie freeman was the entire top of their farm system.
agree/disagree? And where would they be if he’d stayed?
Anthony Franco
12:15
Yeah, that's part of the trade-off to invest in a player who's four years younger. Obviously the compensatory pick they got back for Freeman isn't as valuable as Langeliers
12:16
The Olson/Freeman debate is fair. Not clear yet how that one will turn out but Freeman was better in year one. Braves just seemed to like Olson's long-term profile better because of the age gap

Sorry, but when is the Dodgers chat?  The Opener article usually mentions these things.  Thank you!
Anthony Franco
12:17
Didn't include that one in the opener because Mark was still finalizing his schedule. I believe the plan is for him to hop on for the Dodger chat at 1:00 pm CST this afternoon
12:18
Alright we're past 75 minutes so I'm going to head out for now
12:19
I'll do another chat at 5:00 pm this evening on everything, as I do every Wednesday
12:20
I'm also on Twitter @affranco10 if you want to throw anything else at me on there
Thanks for all the questions, sorry for the stuff I couldn't get to. Have a good afternoon!
