Of course, yes. But in the all-time history of the NFL, the Steelers clearly are an elite franchise. New England isn't "elite" right now either, is it?

Do you think it will ever permeate into that ego of Tomlin, to hire coordinators who are forward thinking new NFL era talent, and let them do their jobs, or will he forever be meddling in everything? I get why he wouldn't leave, it's a cushy job where upper mgt doesn't hold you accountable and lets you dictate your tired old philosophy as long as you meet a "winning record", and waste valuable talent year in and year out.. .all the while the players want to play for him, as it seems they are programmed to accept losing instead of lifting Lombardis.

They hired a new OC last year but to me it's fairly obvious they aren't one of these organizations content to hire and fire coordinators every year or every other year. Like it or not, that's how they operate. Who was it who said the Rooney family thinks in generations?

The Ravens claimed Diontae Johnson even though they weren’t going to play him, apparently to get a compensatory draft pick when he signs elsewhere. What is that process and why didn’t the Steelers do that? It seems the Ravens have mastered the compensatory process.

As I understand it, there's no guarantee they get one for him. They basically just made a procedural move in an attempt to help their chances in that complicated formula.

Brian, watching the games this weekend, the innovation on offense, the talent of the coaching staffs, does not appear the Steelers are woefully, across the board, behind the times of today's NFL?

Well, I'd say they're behind the elite teams (two of which they actually beat this season) but ahead of a lot of those that didn't even make it to the postseason.

Good afternoon Bats, Trivia question for you - what sound does a Raven make when it chokes? Maaaark. Congrats to Bills for doing what the Steelers should have been able to do.

Ouch. Yeah, tough end to the season for them. Mark Andrews is gonna have a brutally long offseason.

Hey Brian, will the Post-Gazette be writing any articles about Skylar Thompson signing soon? It seems like the first domino to fall, in the Steelers committing to Fields as QB next year, and having a backup with a similar skillset.

Gerry Dulac has a new story up right now on the QB situation that mentions Skylar Thompson. But it's a routine offseason signing, fredward. Nothing more. No guarantee he'll even make the 53 come September. He's the QB equivalent to them signing Jonathan Ward to a futures deal at RB.

It really seems like a missed opportunity rebuffing the Bears inquiry into trading for Tomlin. Shouldn't they have at least approached Tomlin on the possibilities?

Not if they knew he'd be 100% opposed to the deal. But honestly, at this point, I do think if there were a team that Tomlin wouldn't mind coaching, it'd be the perfect off-ramp for both sides, the Steelers and Tomlin, and obviously a third party would benefit from that, too. Sure doesn't sound like it's gonna happen, though.
OK everyone, we're out of time for today. Thanks for jumping back in the chat and we'll do it again next week.
