Bring on an experienced/qualified coach to be senior offensive assistant/pass game coordinator/whatever. And if the Steelers continue to struggle scoring points early on in the season under Canada, get him out of there and promote the person in waiting to take the reins. The Steelers really didn't have an in-house candidate like that this year (Mike Sullivan hasn't been an OC since 2018).

Hey Brian.  While I was watching a little bit of the games over the weekend, I saw head coaches actually looking at play cards, covering their mouth with it while communicating to other coaches, etc..  Why doesn't our coach do that?  He spends most of the game standing there watching like a fan.

It always confuses me whether Mike Tomlin is doing too much in the Steelers organization (draft picks, calling defenses, etc.) or not enough (standing on the sideline watching like a fan). Depends on the chat, I guess.

Should the Steelers promote Flores to prevent a quality coach from leaving just so they can provide stability?
Brian Batko
2:51
No, because I also deem Teryl Austin to be a quality coach.

The 49ers seem to be providing a blue print for the Steelers.  When you watch the 49ers, what are the most noticeable differences with the Steelers today (talent at various positions, coaching, etc)?
Brian Batko
2:53
Well, the coaching certainly stands out. Kyle Shanahan is widely considered one of the best offensive minds in football. Canada, not so much. The 49ers OL (especially the tackles (especially Trent Williams)) is also pretty damn good, which always makes the coaches look better.

Brian, solid mock draft picking up Ringo, Harrison, and John. Let it Be!

Thank you very much.

Given that the oline showed consistent improvement where do you think the Steelers put the need to draft a tackle early?
Brian Batko

In an ideal world, you find a stud OL with versatility to play both LT and LG. Then you turn him loose with Dan Moore and Kevin Dotson in a three dogs, two bones position competition. Maybe even two rookies to fortify your depth if both don't earn starting spots over the incumbents.

Do you think we a good draft/off-season away from competing in the next year's post season based on what you saw last weekend? If Purdy can get this far then maybe the "light is still on"?
Brian Batko

One problem is that I feel like the AFC and NFC are two completely different beasts right now. The Eagles and 49ers are very good teams but the QB star power on the other side is just downright overwhelming. Josh Allen couldn't even get to the AFC championship the past two postseasons.

Do you think the Steelers should release Trubisky and try to resign Rudolph as the back-up QB?
Brian Batko
2:58
Sure, they can try to re-sign Mason Rudolph, but why would he do that? I think they should probably move on from Mitch Trubisky and go in a different direction entirely behind Kenny Pickett.

yo batts, would love to see us draft joey porters son. do you think we have a chance or will he be gone?
Brian Batko

Still a long way from the draft and a lot of data that will need to be sifted through from the bowl games, combine, what have you.

Good afternoon Brian. If Derek Watt is not brought back, is Connor Heyward capable of playing fullback?
Brian Batko

Absolutely.

Brian, do you think the Steelers will have any chance competing with Cincinnati, KC or Buffalo in 2023? I'm still in shock of the decision to retain Matt Canada.
Brian Batko

There's always a chance, Steve. But I think you can basically guarantee those three will be back in the playoffs next year. And I'd be shocked if the Ravens don't find a way, assuming they keep Lamar Jackson. The Chargers are still very talented with a top-notch QB. So, that's basically 5 spots accounted for right there, plus the AFC South division winner. As you can see, the Steelers' margin for error to be back in the dance next year is pretty thin. At least that's how I see it at this far-too-early juncture.

Time is up on this one, everybody. Thanks as always for the engagement. Enjoy the title games this weekend.
