There's a reason why Mike Tomlin mentioned quarterback mobility so often this season in press conference settings. He probably had the least mobile regular starter QB in the league this year.

Isn’t it telling that Butler confirmed he didn’t call the plays. When Ben retires will he call out Canada for horrible play calling?
Brian Batko
2:46
No I don't think Ben will sling any dirt on his way out the door.

After watching that game last night, it seems that Qb search will be difficult. It going take a very good, young, mobile QB to compete with this new crop of QB on teams now. And I don't are wh where yo can find one this year in draft or FA, do you?

On the bright side, most QBs coming out of the college ranks these days are dual threats. Now, that doesn't mean they're "running quarterbacks." They're quarterbacks who can run. Kenny Pickett, Sam Howell, Desmond Ridder and Matt Corral all can threaten defenses with their legs. Malik Willis is the most mobile of all coming out in 2022, but he played at a lower level at Liberty and NFL teams must determine how his style will translate.

What are the chances the Steelers have a new OC & DC, and Tomlin actually gives up play calling duties?
Brian Batko

I'll go with 6 percent.

Hi BB, If KC is going to retire, would it be better to let the new GM draft his own team this year.  Thanks!

Not sure that's a huge deal given how collective the approach always is with Kevin Colbert, Mike Tomlin and their scouts. Most likely, an internal candidate will step in for Colbert, and that internal candidate will be someone who has worked closely with the Steelers for a long time and thus shares many of their same values when it comes to team-building.

Bats, I cant help but vent frustration in the Steelers Idiotic handling of the Coordinator positions.  They announce the promotion of Teryl Austin to DC.  Who in their right mind would interview for a position that was 1) Filled already and 2) not allowed to call the plays.....???

It's not as if Mike Tomlin is the only HC in the NFL who calls plays, on offense or defense. I'm guessing there are plenty of coaches out there who would jump at the chance to work for an organization like the Steelers that wins a lot, makes the playoffs and values stability.

Washington asked to be traded and was denied even though there was some depth at WR, at least until JuJu got hurt. Ingram got his wish with very little depth at OLB. Why?

I'm assuming Ingram and Washington handled things quite differently behind the scenes. How can you not? Washington is a guy the Steelers drafted and invested in and got to know over four years. Ingram was essentially a hired gun and Tomlin even mentioned that taking those risks in free agency can be costly. It's also possible that they asked around about Washington's value and discovered it wasn't very high.

Brian, is ARII a football guy? The Steelers success since the 70's had Dan Rooney's fingerprints all over it. He grew up in the business.  ARII was an attorney by trade. Not sure Dan would have allowed the team to steer the course it has recently. Coordinators without authority, malcontents forcing their way out (Ingram this year). My worry is that the rudder that now steers the ship does not have the football acumen or decisiveness that Dan had. Who is next in line?

Next in line figures to be Danny Rooney, Art II's son. He played QB here in Pittsburgh at Shady Side Academy, then in college at Dartmouth. Hopefully that can assuage any concerns you have about his "football guy"-ness.

Wow, it's 3 p.m. already? Thanks as always for joining the chat. Tons of readers and questions even in the offseason, so I'm sure we'll keep it going, as there's never nothing to talk about with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Have a great week.
