Brian Batko's Steelers chat: 02.10.25

Well I certainly think Arthur Smith is in the Justin Fields camp, if we want to call it that. But let's not get Gerry's great reporting misconstrued. He wrote that "there is sentiment in the organization" to bring back Russell Wilson. That can be people other than coaches.

Hey Bats, thanks as always for your chats.  Do you think the league will make any rule changes regarding the "tush-push" in the off-season?  It seems like it's one that the league could get ahead of, before someone seriously gets hurt..
Brian Batko
12:44
Sure thing, SW Steel. I go back and forth on this. Part of me hates the play because it just seems so ... barbarically gimmicky, if that phrase makes sense at all. But the Eagles are light-years better at it than some other teams that try. It is within the rules, no doubt. And legislating a push from behind for a ball-carrier would be somewhat tricky.

So the Tomlin take home from the superbowl is “get better defensive lineman and corners to overwhelm other teams.” Pretty sure those will be the first two picks now….
Brian Batko
12:45
How about quarterback mobility, while we're on that topic? Jalen Hurts scampered for 72 yards and it's a built-in function that helps that offense be so difficult to game-plan for.

We all know about the Rooney Rule. I would like to propose the 'no Arthur Smith guys' rule. That is, do not allow Smith to bring in any of his guys who he loved in the past. His guys took helmets but provided no value. What do you think?
Brian Batko
12:48
I think that's pretty funny, Silent Bob. Feels like I'm not as down on Smith than others after his first season on the job, but I do agree that the personnel usage is a reasonable criticism, maybe even my biggest one. Cordarrelle Patterson just ... doesn't have the juice anymore, I'm sorry. Nice guy but it's over. MyCole Pruitt is fine in that role, but can you upgrade there? And Van Jefferson is gonna be on the weaker end of WR2s in any given season at this po int.

Hi Brian, Thank you for the chats, always insightful!  Question, last the the #1 defense in the league shut down KC in commanding style.  Seems a bit embarrassing to have the #1 paid defense in the league and perform the why we did, will the Steelers make a change and get a respected DC to take over the duties for MT?
Brian Batko
12:49
If it ain't happened by now, it ain't happening this season, Mark.

After watching the Super Bowl, anyone have any doubt the Steelers need to draft defensive linemen?
Brian Batko
12:49
The Eagles wideouts are pretty good too, Momo. And the offensive line, for that matter.

as an Iowa State fan, I resent your Houston statement. LOL
Eagles have won 2 Super Bowls with 2 different QBs and 2 different head coaches since the Steelers last playoff win.  Just sayin'.
Brian Batko
12:51
Sorry, PJ. I'm not in on the Cyclones this season. But yes, the Eagles have managed to thread the needle of riding the ebbs and flows of NFL cycles, changing coaches and coordinators, drafting and developing QBs and the like. If Omar Khan can be the next Howie Roseman, that'd be very nice for the Steelers.

Do you think that since Eli Manning didn’t get into the Hall on the first ballot that perhaps Ben won’t be a first ballot entry? Both 2 time Super Bowl winners and Eli was MVP of the game twice…
Brian Batko
12:53
Ben Roethlisberger was a much better player (that's my opinion) and was much better statistically (that's fact). I think he'll be first-ballot. But I would've thought the same for Eli too, honestly. This small HoF class strikes me as ... strange.

Rodgers, Wilson, Fields, or Darnold who you signing?
Brian Batko
12:54
Zach Wilson?

12:55
Bats do you think we draft a QB this year or next year when we host the draft?
Brian Batko
12:55
Can I say neither? I might go with neither.

Hi Brian, do you see the Steelers trying to trade for Deebo Samuel or maybe signing him as a free agent if he is released?  Thanks.
Brian Batko
12:56
Not gonna pretend I paid a ton of attention to the 49ers and specifically Deebo this season, but following from the outside, I lean toward thinking he's lost a step.

Brian, Watching the SB last night, I could not stop thinking how very far the Steelers are from being competitive with either of these teams, even KC at its worst.  How many seasons do you think we are away from a serious run at the SB?
Brian Batko
12:57
Couldn't tell ya, Artie. I could throw out a number but then there'd be some headline on a Steelers blog like "Brian Batko says it'll be 17 years until team makes a run at a Super Bowl again"

What's the best broadcast booth in the NFL?
Brian Batko
12:58
I'm partial to Tirico-Collinsworth but lots of great ones

What's the best halftime show of all time and who do you think is doing it next year?
Brian Batko
12:59
Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson. Turned me into a man.

Hey Brian! Now reports (albeit from the national media versus you guys) are suggesting the Steelers won't re-sign either QB from last year if a veteran QB becomes available. What are you hearing in this regard?
Brian Batko
1:00
Get off the veteran QB carousel and try to make it work with Fields, that's my thought
Its Over

Can we just accept that the days of the Steelers not being an absolute embarrassment are done. I foresee decades and decades and decades of losing ahead
Brian Batko
1:01
I'm gonna leave you all with a dose of positivity: The Steelers do not have decades and decades and decades of losing ahead.
1:02
OK folks, that's all the time I've got for today, but the mailbag will be back on Thursday. Talk to you there.
