I don't think it works that way, Dan. Any FA, QB or otherwise, should be aware of the situation they're signing up for when they agree to a new deal. It's all baked into the situation, and more than anything else, money talks.

Brian, would it make sense to go all out on D line and WR in the draft and meanwhile just get the bang for the buck QB, whoever that is? Can’t see this team being a Super Bowl contender in the near future. Maybe time to rebuild the core group first, your thoughts?
Brian Batko
10:39
That's pretty much what they did last offseason, Alan. Just substitute O-line for D-line. On one hand, it's smart business. On the other hand, you get what you pay for.

Brian, if the Steelers were to sign Fields to a multi year deal do you envision them actually crafting an offense to take advantage of what he does well or will they try to shoe horn him in to the bland conservative offense they ran last year?
Brian Batko
10:40
I harbor some optimism for the latter, Happy. Mainly because Arthur Smith seems like he'd be all for that.

Next podcast idea....1 of you read Tomlin/Rooney end-of-season quotes from the last few years and the other persons have to guess what year the statement is from
Brian Batko
10:41
That's pretty good, actually.

The typical work week for most folks is 40 hours.  What's the typical work week for the players during the season?
Brian Batko
10:43
Not that dissimilar, really, although they technically only get one day off, work on weekends and sometimes take a private jet to get where they're going.

Good morning Brian, enjoy your work.  If the draft plays out the way the Steelers want it to, do you think it’s a possibility that they could take Ben Sauls in the  7th round in case age or injury catches up to Chris Boswell?  Thanks.
Brian Batko
10:44
I'm a big fan of Ben Sauls, but no. He'll probably have a good NFL career somewhere else.
Dan
10:45
I'm leaning toward Fields but think Russ has been treated unfairly. He faced 3 playoff teams in 11 days, the OL played poorly and the OC and MT handcuffed him. Am I wrong?
Brian Batko
10:46
The OC and MT didn't tell him to fumble at the goal line, serve up a pick-six to Marlon Humphrey or throw an end-zone pick to Justin Reid.

Good morning! If what we are hearing is true( BIG IF) that the Steelers want Fields back, what is taking this long to sign him? He is still a Steeler until FA starts. Not knowing who the QB would impact free agency wouldn’t it? Why would a playmaker want to come here if they don’t know who’s throwing them the ball?
Brian Batko
10:49
Maybe because Fields and his reps feel like they have all the leverage now. And the Steelers aren't the only franchise devoid of a franchise quarterback. We also know the Steelers' playbook when it comes to hammering out significant deals. They typically take their time when it comes to extending their own. So I presume all parties are gauging the market, negotiating, etc.

Bats, assuming Adams, Kirk, Cooper and Slay are available as free agent WRs. Which one do you prefer?
Brian Batko
10:52
Darius Slayton strikes me as the best value among those four. Davante Adams and Cooper Kupp, I can't imagine them wanting to be here. Christian Kirk doesn't move me whatsoever.

Good morning Bats. If you had to bet a sum of money that mattered to you, which position are the Steelers taking with their first pick this year?
Brian Batko
10:53
You know, I went WR (Emeka Egbuka) in my first mock draft but the way you phrased that, JP, I think I'd go DL.

10:54
Brian, any talk about whether Fields and/or Wilson wants to leave for another team?
Brian Batko
10:55
They both have said all the right things. I tend to believe them, but wouldn't it be more likely that Fields wants a fresh start? After all, Mike Tomlin pivoted to Wilson when Fields was 4-2. Couldn't blame him if he's not jumping for joy to be back here.

The NFLPA survey came out and Steelers at the bottom and Tomlin's hiring of Dino's S&C coach from college gave them the worst grade in the NFL.  Does Tomlin know he can go outside the Pittsburgh area or son's school to hire coaches?  Can somebody help him with his hiring practicies in all areas he has not been good in this area since Cowher's guys left!
Brian Batko
10:57
Yeah, it seems the players spoke loud and clear about how they view the new strength and conditioning staff. But it's March now, so seems to me the Steelers won't be making a change there this offseason. That's...awkward.
Eric Carr
10:57
Brian, what's the percentage chance that we sign as an UDFA a certain WR from BC?
Brian Batko
10:58
The NFLPA sent a long list of draft-eligible prospects and Dino Tomlin was not listed. He may not even be pursuing it after a super senior season in which he only caught three passes for 40 yards. So seems to me we can stop with this bit.

you always hear coaches and pundits say they should play to their strengths.  what would you say the steelers strengths are and you can’t say place kicker or punter.

Jump balls to George Pickens?

Is the only way the Steelers ever move off of the endless loop of mediocrity if they somehow stumble upon an unknown franchise type quarterback late in the draft (Brock Purdy?) who manages to get into the lineup because all other QBs on the roster were injured earlier in the game and lights it up so to speak in spite of the Steelers self imposed outdated quarterback restrictions and shows a Patrick Mahomes type ability to put an entire team on his shoulders and will them to victory?
Brian Batko
10:59
No but that would be pretty convenient.

Hey BB!  I want DL Grant in 1st round or a WR. DL typically takes a few years to make an impact but Grant can step in day 1 and stop the run - which is really what we need. Thoughts?  Hope you had a great weekend
Brian Batko
11:00
Kenneth Grant from Michigan sure has a lot of bullet points in his favor, yes.

Oh man, you're right, I do have to get on that. Thanks for the reminder, SG. And thanks for chatting, everyone. Ray Fittipaldo is on deck for tomorrow at 2 p.m.
