Well, they didn't pick up Hassenauer, they just kept him around. Not at all surprising given that he's cheap and got some valuable experience last year. I imagine the focus is still OL and RB in the early portion of the draft.

Even with all the end-of-season post-mortems, I’m still not really clear on WHY the Steelers were running the offense where nearly each down was a passing play with multiple WRs running short routes.  Was it a function of Ben—i.e his medium/deep passes weren’t accurate, or he didn’t want to get hit waiting for deeper routes to develop, or his arm was shot?  Was it a function of the OLine—i.e. they can’t run block and they can only hold pass rushers for 2 seconds?  Please don’t say all of the above...  It was outright bizarre watching this especially when the Steelers were several games into their end-of-season collapse.

I don't know! No one does except Randy Fichtner, Ben and the others who were heavily involved in planning each week. Can I say that? Or, if you choose to believe Paul up there, it was simply a replacement for the putrid run game, and that's it. With a better run game next season, the Steelers will wing it around all over the field. Greatest show on Kentucky bluegrass.

Totally agree on Haskins nothing to lose. Was just wondering where Louis Lipps lands on all time Steelers wide receiver list

He's fifth on the team's all-time receiving yards list, but fourth among wideouts. After AB, Stallworth, Swann and Ward, he has as good a resume as any.

Given the voidable years in Ben's new deal and fact that Rudolph is in the last year of his contract, his seems to be the year for the Steelers to draft a QB early. Do you get the impression that the Steelers have a sense of urgency to find the next franchise QB?

It's an interesting situation. On one hand, you always want to have an eye on the future, especially at that position. Guys like Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson benefited from not being thrown into the fire right away. But I'm more of the belief that bringing back Ben means you need to build a better cast, so I want someone in the first round who can help right away.

If the Steelers trade their first round pick back to a team picking in the top 10 of the 2nd round, what would be the expected compensation?

J-Bone followed by J$Money. Wonder if there's any relation. But according to the draft pick trade chart, trading 24 overall could get you a team's high second and high third.

If Ben retires after 2021, what's the dead money that will be charged to 2022?  I'm hoping it's a lot less than they would have faced this year.

Yes, it will be. Hence the new deal and paycut. It will be $10.34 million. But the nice thing is, if they want to continue following the Saints' plan with Drew Brees, Ben could decide he wants to retire next offseason and stay on the payroll until after June 1, giving the team more flexibility with the cap until they officially incur the charges

OK everyone, I gotta punch out. Next time we chat, a week from now, it'll basically be a free agency frenzy around the league. Should be fun.
