Brian Batko's Steelers chat: 03.14.22

That's the big question for me. Lot of calculus had to be done by the Steelers to reach a decision on this move. Is Trubisky worth it to upgrade over Rudolph? Is Trubisky good enough to avoid giving up assets for Jimmy G? I'm not sure I'd want to pay more than $5 million a year for Trubisky, but I suppose QB inflation around the league is a real thing.

In what universe does it make sense to sign Trubisky?

In addition to the points I laid out above, for all we know, Matt Canada and Mike Tomlin love the fit for what they want to do on offense. Which isn't outlandish, considering Trubisky was great at UNC with a lot of RPO stuff, is athletic enough to scramble and make plays on third/fourth and short, etc. But to the outside world, it's a leap of faith, no doubt.

what is the downside of Trubisky? I have read all the good stats and things. So what is the reason why he was available so cheap and why he didn't even really play last year? Thanks

Because he was just 29-21 as a starter for a Bears team with a damn good defense and got benched for Nick Foles in 2020? Let's just be honest, he wasn't good in Chicago. But, again, you can make a compelling case that it was an awful situation for him to walk into, and that Bills OC Brian Daboll was great for him last year. We. Shall. See...

Is it safe to say that Trubisky was the only FA QB the Steelers had any real interest in?  Sure, Rodgers would have been fun, but he's old, and Wilson cost a lot.  The rest didn't seem to be much of an improvement over Mason.

No, I don't think so. First off, those other guys weren't FAs; it would've cost the Steelers something in draft capital to trade for them. And I have to assume they did their due diligence on the other FA options and what they would cost. Maybe they only had eyes for Trubisky all along, but it wouldn't be prudent to lock in one guy because then you might miss out on value elsewhere. Clearly, they determined the price was right on this one.

Happy Pi Day Brian. Are you hearing any rumors of linebackers, or linemen free agents possibly signing here in Pittsburgh?  By the way, cherry is probably my favorite pie.😀

Incredible way to end this chat, Darnell. Happy Pi Day to you, too. Now I want some pie later - pizza, chicken pot, maybe key lime? All three wouldn't be bad, either. Have not seen any free agents linked to the Steelers yet but the day is young.

OK folks, thanks for tapping in for Trubisky talk. Surely a lot more content to come from us, written and spoken, the rest of the week as the Steelers make more moves or stand pat among the free agency frenzy. Talk to you all next week.
