I wouldn't say their credibility continues to dwindle, but their believability in public settings? Maybe. If you're a fan, though, perhaps you don't even want your front office being 100% transparent with the media. It's not like you want them sacrificing potential advantages just to be honest with the press.

Hi Brian, thanks for your chats.  From what I’ve heard, the Raiders need receivers.  Is there a scenario where the Steelers could trade Pickens and a future draft pick for the Raiders’ first round pick  this year?
Brian Batko
12:33
Raiders have the 6th overall pick, so I highly, highly doubt it

Brian, Is Tomlin making himself and the entire organization look desperate by chasing his man crush Rodgers all over the school yard? This is a one year rental. Wouldn't they be better off using those cap dollars on guys who could help for 2-3 years at least? Are the Steelers delusional enough to believe they are a 42 year old QB away from a Superbowl?
Brian Batko
12:36
Ehh yes and no. I do think some unbiased onlookers are shaking their heads at the Steelers playing this waiting game. But others are plenty cognizant of just how thin the NFL QB ranks have become and thus more understanding of this pursuit, so to speak.

At what point does Tomlin, Khan and Mr. Rooney listen to Cam about the Steeler way and stop chasing waterfalls?
Brian Batko
12:39
Well, as much as they value Cam Heyward's input, I'm sure they also believe the QB room still needs plenty of TLC

will MT fail to win playoff game with 3 different future HOF QB's? that would cement his legacy.
Brian Batko

Why are you writing off a Duck Hodges comeback?

John-Franklin Meyers seems unhappy in Denver. They need a wr. Is a George for JFM and picks possible?
Brian Batko
12:41
Interesting thought but just from a cursory search, it seems as if Broncos DT John Franklin-Meyers wants a nice new contract and I'm not sure that's something the Steelers would be too eager to do with how much they're already paying other guys on this defense. Yet another reason why getting a first-round D-lineman and having him on that rookie deal for 5 years makes so much sense.

Which is fewer - the number of licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop or the number of swings HCMT takes until he finds a QB that can win him of playoff game?
Brian Batko
12:42
Depends. If you're the owl, you just bite that thing clean off after a lick or two.

Brian, We seem to have LOTS of depth needs and limited picks.  Less worried about corner with Slay on board (at least for this year) but the DL room is a mess, we didn't make any FA moves that even make me comfortable with rotational pieces, despite the Ekuale signing. EVERYONE besides Cam and Benton are completely forgettable.  Also, we need RB, a QB to develop (gotta keep taking swings every year) , rotational OT, etc... Wish we worked the compensatory pick strategy earlier than this year.  We HAVE to go DL on first round pick, but don't we also have to take DL at 3 or 5 as well? Do you think there is any chance they trade a pick next year to get a second DL pick?
Brian Batko
12:44
Sure, I could see them robbing from that projected 2026 stash to pay themselves in the 2025 draft. But they did that for Isaiahh Loudermilk once upon a time and we saw how that worked out. Good thing about working your way toward those comp picks is it does give you some flexibility/peace of mind for wheeling and dealing, though. My sense is this will become a staple of the Omar Khan GM regime. And finally, no, I wouldn't say they absolutely need to double down on the DL. But it'd be nice.

Hi Brian, regarding Steelers draft busts that often come up around this time of year, relative talent aside, do you think that a lot of this is due to a lack of coaching?  Perhaps they were good in college because they had good coaching and the Steelers just don't provide that.
Brian Batko
12:46
Yeah, I think there's always the debate/discussion of whether a guy missed because of a bad evaluation or a lack of development or some of both. And of course sometimes the fit can matter, too. Injuries, sometimes, as well. It's in inexact science, as we always say this time of year, and that applies all the way until careers or tenures come to a close.

How is signing ARod costing us draft picks (as implied in your answer to Butch)?  I thought he was released by his former team and as such doesn't count in the compensatory formula.
Brian Batko
12:47
He doesn't, but I presume Butch meant it'll cost the Steelers draft position by trying to lean into yet another middling 9-8/10-7 season with mediocre-to-decent QB play instead of blowing it up.

Do NFL front office have an actual “trading block” .. A la Madden franchise mode?  I assume not in the exact same way, but GMs must talk about their rosters amongst themselves as to the players they are willing to negotiate a trade for/away..right?  The list of remaining FA’s we know are meh, but wondering if there are any possible trade partners for pieces the Steelers might desire?   Thats a harder “list” of players to know about.   Shhhh🤫
Brian Batko
12:49
Yeah, I mean, Omar Khan says it himself all the time that he's constantly in communication with other teams about players he believes could help the Steelers. Naturally, that goes both ways, too. Howie Roseman is known for calling up every GM in the league trying to get a second-round pick for a player who's on his quote-unquote trade block. So without pretending like I've ever sat in that seat or anywhere close to it, that's generally how the sausage is made.

Hi Brian  Why don't the Steelers draft a mid round QB, Play Mason as the starter and use money to build all around a better surrounding team? instead of spending money on an older QB.
Brian Batko

Fine by me!

12:51
With tomlin closing in on chuck nolls games won record, once tomlin breaks the record, maybe in 2-3 years, he can then retire and allow the team to begin a rebuild, yes, no, maybe?
Brian Batko
12:52
He only needs 11 more, Hilt. Interesting factoid for you to bring up. Maybe that is a reasonable milestone/checkpoint to keep in mind with him and what his endgame is, when it starts coming into focus, etc.
I'll leave you all with that food for thought. Something to ponder from the chat room. Thanks as always for stopping in and Ray will be back with you tomorrow for more fodder.
