Brian Batko's Steelers chat: 06.02.25

To me, the main inflection point there is that Arthur Smith will trust Rodgers more pre-snap and open up more of the offense with him in there. But generally, I'm with you, TX. The Steelers appear to have zero vision at QB. First it was mobility. Then it was veteran leadership. It all kind of just makes you think Mike Tomlin is flying by the seat of his pants depending on whatever (sometimes brutal) options are out there, which is actually what a lot of QB-needy teams are forced to do anyway.

Brian, As long as the Steelers don't spend draft capital or money that goes beyond the 2025 cap I don't care what the Steelers do at QB in 2025. What say you?
Brian Batko
1:13
Nihilistic as that may be, I get it. Which is also why I'd try to avoid any unforced errors in terms of major distractions, headaches, whatever you want to call them with the QB position. And uh ... well ... here we are.

Hey Brian, obviously all eyes are on the offense this year and QB in particular.  If you were the GM/HC what philosophy or personnel change would you be pushing for this coming year outside of QB1.  Thanks and hope you have a Cartertastic Day!
Brian Batko

I'd turn it all over to Christopher Carter!

three chats I sent reasonable questions and none were answered. Why
Brian Batko
1:17
Could be because of the typo in your username. Or because there are always more questions in my chats than I can possibly get to and I don't give preferential treatment to one person or another. But thank you, Not Nuttimg

Hi Brian.  Have you congratulated Mason for winning the Freddie Mercury look-alike contest?
Brian Batko
1:19
No I have not but he's somebody to love for a lot of Steelers fans these days. Still, he'll be under pressure if he ends up being QB1. Imagine if he has this team singing we are the champions

The next person that mentions Aaron Rodgers should be put in a barrel and sent down the river to sleep with the fishes. Why does every fan, radio host, writer talk about this guy non-stop? Seems like there is a 99.9% chance he's going to sign here. But ultimately, there are only two outcomes, he signs or he doesn't. That doesn't need dissected 20 different ways. Aren't you sick of it also?
Brian Batko
1:20
Whoa whoa whoa. Am I sick of it? Sure. But I do think there are more layers to it than whether he signs or doesn't sign. A lot more layers.

Good Morning Brian.  I have not seen this addressed but-----If AR signs, does he get to wear the number 12?????????  It will be entertaining to see the reaction if he gets to wear number 12.
Brian Batko
1:22
Highly doubt that, CA John. But it is quite convenient that the only person wearing No. 8 is Corliss Waitman, a punter who's not likely to be on the team (and probably doesn't have many people hanging up his jersey at home).

Bats- can't ask a Rodgers question. So - how have we NOT signed Watt? I get that we generally wait too long for contract negotiations but we should have set the market and let other people make stupid decisions as opposed to now having to take into account the Garrett contract. Is the delay at this point due to needing to figure out other salaries ( quarterback, wide receiver) ? Or is there another reason. If you're not going to let Heyward go you darn well shouldn't let Watt go...

If I had a dollar for every time the answer to a question was "the Steelers are old school and they do things the way they do things" I could pay TJ myself! In all seriousness, there's something to be said for holding strong to your core beliefs, certain philosophical tenets of the organization, etc. But you also have to learn to adapt and change as the business does. And reading between the lines with this situation, especially with some of JJ Watt's public remarks, TJ would like the Steelers to be a bit less stuck in their ways on this one.

GM, there seems to be outside looking in of course a lot of turmoil with this team. At what point do we blow it up ? Not the Steelers I’m used to following.
Brian Batko
1:25
I wouldn't say that, CP. The Rodgers stuff might be bringing some unnecessary drama, but how quickly we forget some of the Kardashian-esque Steelers teams of recent vintage. Plus it's the NFL, there's usually some turmoil somewhere

Aside from TJ, do you see any other extensions possible?

Nah, nothing comes to mind

Dear former teammates,  Dallas will win the Super Bowl. I will block for my team at all times. I will show up on time. I don't need or want the ball every play. I will not throw Dak under the bus. I love Dallas. Everything is better and bigger in Dallas.
Brian Batko

Yep, you don't care at all about your personal stats, just as long as the team wins.

Good morning ... er ... afternoon, Brian! I am perplexed by the reported interest the Steelers have in trading for that Falcon's TE whose name escapes me. Due diligence or a serious inquiry?
Brian Batko
1:29
Kyle Pitts? Jonnu Smith? Due diligence, serious inquiry, either way it's routine business for NFL GMs. Sometimes these moves work out and sometimes they don't.

Can you ask the PG Help Desk to fix the DNS issue - www.post-gazette.com works, but post-gazette.com does not.  Hasn't since Thursday or Friday.
Anyhow, I love Watt.  But I loved Ward, Troy, and Harrison at least as much and in each of those cases the Steelers avoided sentimental spending.  I'm afraid those Steelers are no longer these Steelers. Are there ANY rumors re: how Watt is feeling with the reported contract that's on the table?
Brian Batko

You got that from Nerd, PG Help Desk? That's certainly above my pay grade and IT abilities. As for the latest on TJ Watt, I'll point you to Gerry Dulac's story from juuuust about an hour or two ago on WWW.post-gazette.com https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/steelers/2025/06/02/nfl-otas-tj-wa...

As for me, I'm out. Appreciate you all dropping by after missing our time together on Memorial Day. We'll do it again next week.
