Jump in a time machine, possibly to as far back as the 2019 draft? There's really not much they can do, Greg, at least not with the in-house options. Joe Haeg has been in concussion protocol for a while now, but I suppose he could be a last resort at LT. Chuks Okorafor clearly never got comfortable over there when they tried to switch him last year. Trent Scott is Trent Scott. HCBB would tell GMOK to GMAG (get me another guy).

Brian, we haven’t done a good job of assessing and drafting o line talent.   Why the disconnect here when we can be so good at brining if in other positions like wide receiver?  New line coaches very Year doesn’t help but what is the answer ?

To me, it's been more circumstantial than systemic, if that makes sense. I'm pretty sure the Steelers could've told you two years ago Creed Humphrey was a beast. But they liked Pat Freiermuth more, then took a chance on Kendrick Green. The Steelers probably liked some guys in this year's draft, but by all accounts, they fell in love with the boy next door in Kenny Pickett. The answer might be to scheme around it at this point. Good luck, Matt Canada.

Brian, are any of those betting web sites taking action on the length of my tenure? I’ve often thought of returning to the college game….

Pat Meyer checks into the chat, folks. I think those betting websites send me every imaginable prop in the world, but nothing yet on the job status of the Steelers' O-line coach.

Brian-  Which position group has improved the most from last year in your opinion?  Not just starting talent but depth of talent?

Hmm good question. I'd probably go DL off the top of my head. Remember all the hand-wringing about that in recent years? But Larry Ogunjobi is here now and seems ready to roll. Chris Wormley's sack production was nice. Montravius Adams was a pleasant surprise and Isaiahh Loudermilk was a draft pick that left me flabbergasted, but has been better than expected, although both guys need to get healthy presently. Did you know presently can mean both "now" or "soon"? That's confusing.

A starting WR who consistently drops passes gets benched/replaced.  Just the same, an ILB needs to attack, shed blocks, and make tackles.  Why does Devin Bush still start, he is SO bad!

Hey, he had a TFL yesterday! But I also noticed him getting taken out of the play by tight end TJ Hockenson on that long run by the Lions on third-and-12, a play that Mike Tomlin called "painful" after the game. It sure seems like it's his job to lose going into Week 1 but when he's out there he'll probably be up and down. That's often the case with average players.

Hi Brian..In watching the game against the Lions I think input any QB with the first teamers would have given the same Result. Same as if you swapped out Masons one series and threw in Mitch for his position. Not sure it would of looked much better. Why not just go with Kenny to start the season, Keep Mason cause he is less cap costly, release Mitch (higher cap) and sign some OL or other player to help the team?

Stop. They aren't gonna cut Mitch Trubisky, who moved his family here and has said all the right things about being in this QB "competition" with a first-round pick drafted after he signed in free agency.

Moore and Daniels are both playing much worse than they were last year. I keep hearing about new techniques being taught to the offensive line. Maybe Meyer isn’t the right man for the job. How about do whatever works for you to keep the qb from getting pressured, without getting penalized?
Brian Batko
2:55
Moore is a concern. James Daniels, he's a fifth-year guy with a solid resume. I'm willing to pump the brakes on that after just three preseason games. And how about we give Pat Meyer a little bit more leeway, too? Again, I'm not saying you shouldn't be worried about the OL play going into this season, but the season hasn't even started yet.

Offensive Line and OLB seem like the popular choices for the Steelers to make a move before Week 1. But do you see a surprise position pickup elsewhere? Maybe safety depth due to injuries?
Brian Batko
2:57
How about RB? I know Jaylen Warren has been a preseason/camp darling but perhaps the Steelers still feel they don't have a clear-cut No. 2 to Najee Harris between the rookie, Benny Snell and Anthony McFarland. Not expecting or predicting it, but you asked for a potential surprise addition, so that's my 2 cents.

From reading reports from around the league it sounds like the Niners are a team with a surplus of edge rushers. Do you know if the Steelers are looking at anyone there?

SF plays a 4-3, so tougher to find a natural scheme fit there. One guy to keep an eye on is Quincy Roche. Remember him? Steelers' 6th-round pick a year ago who had yours truly leading the parade for him as a Day 3 draft steal ... then got cut in favor of UDFA Jamir Jones. But Roche might get squeezed off the Giants roster, despite playing well from what I've read, so maybe he'll circle back to Pittsburgh the way others have done in the past.
OK, friends, that's it for today. Great to chat with you all and we'll run it back next week, game week, Bengals week. Be ready.
