Good morning Bats. How much credit do we give the Steelers D? As opposed to how much derision do we heap on the Patriots ball carriers?
Brian Batko

Why is it a good morning? Because we're one day closer to death. Mike McDaniel said that. And the Dolphins are 0-3. Anyway...

Hey Brian, Aaron Rodgers is a bit of a temperamental guy in his last rodeo.  How long is his fuse if the passing game either can't scheme anything other than dumps to Warren and fades to the endzone, or simply doesn't have the personnel such that they can spring open in the designed route tree?
Brian Batko
10:44
That's a good question. Something I'm monitoring, for sure. Pat Freiermuth and Calvin Austin both were telling me last week that the trip out to Malibu not only broke the ice, but started laying the foundation for those relationships with Aaron Rodgers that it's not jarring to have those tough conversations in the heat of the moment. We'll see if they can get it going more downfield. The chuck-it-deep shot to DK Metcalf didn't produce any yardage in the box score but that PI was huge.

good morning Brian, smoke and mirrors.  Steelers should've lost that game.  I get it, a W is a W.  But man.  200 yards total?  giving up 400.  My question is how many passes parallel to the line of scrimmage can we throw?  Are guys not open?  It seems Rodgers is frustrated as well.
Brian Batko

From the press box I didn't feel like there were a ton of open guys he was missing but I'll have to watch it back on the All-22 at some point. Rodgers has seen his intended air yards per attempt and completion decline pretty steadily and this season it's even lower than last year with the Jets. Something to keep an eye on, obviously.

Hi Brian, with the Pats tying score you could clearly see Wilson and Queen look at each other confused as to whose responsibility this was.  I know this was the third game but these problems carry back to last year?  Still?  communication issues??
Brian Batko
10:49
Yeah, that was bad. Effing bad, to quote Teryl Austin from Thursday. So if you're scoring at home, last week the Steelers gave up a touchdown because of lack of communication/assignment understanding in the secondary. This week it was the linebackers. Maybe they've got them both out of their system now and the coverage will be airtight going forward.

What do you think is the main reason things just aren't (and haven't been) clicking for the Steelers?  Yes, they won.  But, with 5 takeaways, it should have been a blowout.  Can't count on that every week.
Brian Batko
10:51
I don't know, Scranton. Not to make excuses, but they are missing key pieces on defense right now, particularly at safety and corner. But this is even more alarming when you consider the three teams they've faced so far are all in the midst of transition, be it with their QB, front office, coaching staff or a combination of two or three. The Steelers are dealing with a lot of new faces too, of course. But when they're veterans of this caliber, there's a different expectation for how soon they can fit in.

The Steelers would have likely lost this game if they would have had 4 turnovers instead of 5. Is that correct?
Brian Batko
10:51
Yeah, probably

Hi Brian, is Pat Meyer regarded as a good coach, bad coach, or a meh coach ?   Seumalo, Frazier, and McCormick seem to have regressed under Meyer.
Brian Batko
10:52
Hey Kevin. Did you just include a Google search in a chat question? Never seen that one before. Impressive. Let me know what the internet says.

Brian, why do the Steelers play a soft zone and allow those 8-12 yd catches all the time?  Are they playing too conservative on defense? On offense too because they don’t air it out early to set up the run?  Thanks for your comments.
Brian Batko
10:53
We all surmised the Steelers were going to be playing more aggressive, man-to-man coverage this season with the additions of Jalen Ramsey and Darius Slay. Then again, Joey Porter Jr. was a key piece of that and he's out right now. Then again again, Brandin Echols is that kind of corner and he was in there for 84% of the snaps yesterday.

This team feels like the car you bought for the looks, because it was "cool," even though the warranty was way past expired, and you're ignoring the check engine lights, because you don't want to feel stupid about what you purchased. This car is going to put us upside down on payments. Thoughts?
Brian Batko
10:54
Maybe, but either way, you didn't dip too much into your funds for a new car next year.

Happy Victory Monday Brian!  AR leads the league in TDs thrown. Is that a sign that once this team figures out what works on O, that the expectations can only go up?
Brian Batko
10:55
He's tied with Caleb Williams. To be honest, I think there are much better ways to evaluate QB play than touchdown passes. That's pretty archaic and circumstantial.

Hi Brian. I'm thinking we start a GoFundMe for Heyward's non-all-pro contract he had to settle for this year, if he continues making the game changing plays like he did yesterday.... anyways, the secondary to me seemed to get absolutely shredded by Maye. I usually find Ray's grading agreeable, but I thought he was generous there w/ the B-. Do you think the secondary was at fault, or the d-line didn't get enough regular pressure, or both? The defense just didn't look great minus the splash plays, as many as there were.

Cam should've included batted passes in the incentives. He'd be able to buy the Steelers when he retires. Anyways, this is where I tell you that you can ask Ray himself at 10 am Wednesday! Because I'm signing off. Everyone enjoy the rest of your Monday, safe travels if you're heading across the pond, and we'll talk soon.
