Very important. I think yesterday's outcome might be different if they don't lose McDonald in the first half. That was another monkey wrench that Randy Fichtner had to adjust to on the fly. Tough with a second-year guy under center.

Tomlin is a good CEO, but needs to be told hes been awful rebuilding this defense.  He would need new coordinators moving forward.
Brian Batko
12:47
Well it's not really his job to rebuild the defense. That's up to Kevin Colbert. He put a lot of faith in Devin Bush and Mark Barron at the second level, and has put a lot of money into the D-line of a 3-4 team, not to mention bringing back Bud Dupree for his option year. All questionable decisions, more or less.
Todd

Defense gave up 168 yards rushing!  Is that, below the line?
Brian Batko
12:47
yes, Todd

Why do we continue to run WR screens when the defensive backs have no threat of getting beat over top and are therefore giving no cushion?  Like running your head into a brick wall (which ironically is how I feel watching this offense).
Brian Batko
12:48
Better than TE screens

It seems this team just isn't good enough.  They can't overcome their mistakes and those of the coaching staff like previous teams.  Bad time to have given up a top 10 pick, even for Minkah, no?
Brian Batko
12:49
I still don't think so. That was gonna be one of, if not the biggest, positions of need in the 2020 draft regardless. And I really don't think they would've drafted a QB anyway.

Can Ben serve as interim OC? Couldn’t do worse could he?
Brian Batko
12:49
Now that'd be interesting.

What’s Fitzpatrick doing on the line not Edmonds?
Brian Batko
12:50
The safety spot is more interchangeable than a lot of people realize, I think.
Zack
12:50
Why not play Gilbert instead of Barron?
Brian Batko
12:51
Well, obviously they don't believe the rookie sixth-rounder Ulysees Gilbert is ready for that kind of role. He's been playing exclusively on special teams.
Pat
12:51
Do you see Keith Butler making it through the season?
Brian Batko
12:51
Yeah, this isn't the Browns we're talking about.
BB - Big Ben or Brian Batko?
12:51
Brian, is the world about to end? Or is this feeling just the result of an 0-3 start? Also, are you a Seinfeld and/or The Office fan?
Brian Batko
12:52
I woke up today. Still had all my faculties. My house was still standing. All good things. Never watched Seinfeld, but I'm sure I'd enjoy it. Haven't seen The Office all the way through, but I like it.

Remember when you guys said Conner was good enough to replace me.....

Loved your Grimble hoops analogy.  I would add: and when he does get to take the ball to the hoop he clangs the slam dunk off the rim.  Thanks for the chats!
Brian Batko
12:53
Appreciate you, Guest.

Brian, I am under the impression that a lot of the steelers' problems on defense comes from not having a legitimate run stopper who can also push the middle. The run defense has not been good since Hampton retired and Tomlin and even Colbert have reasoned the game is changing. Is the game changing only for the steelers or is Tomlin and Colbert doing a Huntington spin on the fans?
Brian Batko
12:54
Javon Hargrave might not be making himself any money with the Steelers this season. Stephon Tuitt is finally starting to justify the big contract he got in some ways. But Cam Heyward? He hasn't been good enough these first three games. Has not been disruptive. And this D-line's depth isn't showing itself, either.
Juice

O-line was getting pushed around most of the game. Would it kill Finctner to roll Rudolph out of the pocket? Also, yet another game with limited half-time adjustments made by the coaching staff. Thoughts?
Brian Batko
12:55
I thought we'd see some more play-action, Juice. Or maybe some RPO stuff like Rudolph did in college? They need to get more creative, for sure. Especially if McDonald is gonna be down for any length of time.

Second week in a row bud played against backup lineman and did little to nothing. Cant believe they shelled out 9 mill for him this year. You?
Brian Batko
12:56
Agreed. He couldn't take advantage of the dude filling in for Joe Staley at all. Been a disappointing start for him so far.

I think they're getting around $30M in cap space next year between Brown and Bud.  Have to be big players in FA for once - not much on this team worth resigning to big $$
Brian Batko
12:57
They're gonna want to lock up TJ Watt and JuJu now, as they should. The Conner situation gets murkier by the game, for sure. Steelers spent some money this offseason in free agency, but uh, look where they are with it.
Tom
12:57
Brain,  Is is time to give Buggs a shot?  Thanks.
Brian Batko
12:58
I wouldn't say that. Maybe it couldn't hurt, but obviously he hasn't been showing enough in practice to warrant a hat.
this guy
12:58
Mason is young and he's going to make some mistakes.  However, I think he has shown enough to think he can be a legit starter in the NFL.  thoughts?
Brian Batko
12:58
Yeah I'm kind of with this guy. Way too early to write him off. He's faced a couple solid defenses.
Steven
12:59
Who is having the last laugh?  Bell? AB? Ben? or the Steelers?
Brian Batko
1:00
No one's laughing right now, Steven. Bell is 0-3, AB is 0-9,00,000 and Ben is out for the year as his team languishes with a winless start. What's that phrase, mutually assured destruction? And now, this chat will self-destruct. Thanks, everyone!
