Brian Batko's Steelers chat: 10.13.25

Steeler Joe

BB! Hope you had a great weekend. I'm predicting Freiermuth gets 10 catches on Thursday. You with me?
Brian Batko
2:45
Cincinnati is Freiermuth's personal heaven. He has at least five catches or a touchdown in all four career games there, including his career best 9 for 120 a couple years ago. But no, I'm not going to predict that, though I appreciate the inquiry Steeler Joe.

Do you think they might flex the Colts game to Sunday night?
Brian Batko
2:46
If they give me four consecutive prime-time games to cover, I'm gonna crash out, Mrbig

Do you think Tomlin learned a lesson from Brown, Pickens, Johnston, Bell, etc. that the headaches and drama aren't worth the on-field production?  This year's roster seems different than the recent past.
Brian Batko
2:47
Eh, perhaps to some extent. You're never going to win with all choir boys. But I do feel like the character quotient, if you want to call it that, has been increased in recent drafts.

Hi BB! I'm trying to become a better man and let go of looking over my shoulder, but sometimes I just can't help myself. The decision on Fields is looking wiser every game. And it's hard to say that the trade for Ramsey is anything but a good one. But I am curious how Minkah is doing in South Florida. Is he panning out well for the Dolphins, or did this FO see the writing on the wall early and shipped him off before his play declined any further (making this trade look even better)?
Brian Batko
2:49
He seems to be playing well. Only 29 tackles but an interception too and the advanced metrics in coverage are the best of his career to this point. The Dolphins are atrocious and their QB is calling out the team's leadership and players for being late, skipping meetings, so all in all, things are going well down there for Minkah.

Brian, James Franklin is an excellent recruiter. Guys want to play for him. He wins a lot of games but can't seem to beat the top teams. His game management skills are questionable at best. He does not seem to hire the best assistant coaches. He has not had much post season success. Couldn't I also be describing Mike Tomlin here?
Brian Batko
2:51
There are parallels, I suppose, but Tomlin strikes me as a coach who brings a little bit different, little more effective edge to the role that helps his team win some of those games they aren't supposed to.

Can we trade Muth for a 2nd or 3rd round pick?
Brian Batko
2:52
Lots of questions about trading Pat Freiermuth. I honestly believe Tomlin's answer today that the time's gonna come for Freiermuth to be more involved in the game plan and contribute to winning.

Hola Batsy.  Since 2018, no draft pick was selected to a pro bowl, only 3 alternates.  A few made pro bowls after leaving the team.  Only Mason Mccormick and Dan Moore were mid to late pick turned starter.  Can we say drafting has been bad to awful in the last 6-7 years?
Brian Batko
2:54
Sure, there have been too many whiffs for anyone's liking. But I happen to think Omar Khan's drafts so far have been quite strong, Jay. You want to ding them because Nick Herbig hasn't turned into a "starter" yet? I won't. Look at the impact he has on games.
Zamo
2:54
Hey BB!  Good win yesterday.  Let’s hope DK stays healthy!  He is easily the most important piece now and most irreplaceable player period - besides Boz.  Cheers bud
Brian Batko
2:54
You're probably right about that, Zamo. I don't know what this offense would look like without DK Metcalf.
Tampa Too

Brian, the Steelers took a time out for their defense in the beginning of the third quarter and the Browns were not near the goal line. Any idea why they did this?
Brian Batko
2:55
Maybe they just had some sort of mix-up and wanted to fix it rather than give up a huge play
JJ
2:56
BB, against all odds, I called a fair game and even (almost) pointed out that one of my siblings kept inexplicably lining up offsides. You're welcome,
Brian Batko
2:57
You did good, JJ. I thoroughly enjoy your commentary on these games. And calling a fair game the way you have is great cushion for CBS to keep running you out there on the Steelers.

With the trade deadline looming, Freiermuth seems to be the one who seems mentioned most on here. However, with several teams (Bills, 49ers in particular) dealing with injury issues on the edge, is Highsmith a candidate to be moved, esxpecially with the emergence of Herbig?
Brian Batko
2:58
It's a reasonable idea, but I happen to think this OLB trio is a superpower for the Steelers defense. Why weaken that unless you're completely blown away by an offer? Not to mention injuries can and do happen often at that position, too.

Brian, do you know if any of the players or Steelers staff read these chats?  Have you ever heard anything referenced?
Brian Batko
2:58
I thought they were the ones asking the questions?
Gene
2:59
I didn’t listen to Tomlin’s press conference so how severe his Killebrew’s injury?
Brian Batko
2:59
How dare you. Unfortunately, I'd be stunned if he isn't out for the season.

I can’t wait to see if the Steelers can continue to improve and look good against what is generally considered to be a “good Team”. We have several coming in the latter half of the schedule. What do you think, Brian?
Brian Batko
3:01
I think that was the kicker to my analysis this morning. And as we sit here today, I feel more optimistic about this team doing it than recent Steelers teams, for whatever that's worth. Please read if you haven't: https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/steelers/2025/10/13/steelers-brown...
OK pallies, I've got to run. Thanks for sitting down with me and we'll do it again next week!
