Brian Batko's Steelers chat: 10.14.19

No way, Conner was really effective last night, too. But it showed the coaching staff they can trust Benny Snell to spell Conner. I'm still of the mind that good RBs are kind of a dime a dozen. It's an unfortunate reality for guys that play such a demanding and grueling positiobn,

What did Bush do (or say) that drew the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty?
Brian Batko
12:44
Not sure, that was kind of a weird one. It must have been really bad or just really right in front of the official.

When Bush was hurt, it made me realize how different the defense is with him and Barron in there. With those 2, Nelson, and Fitzpatrick, this has the makings of a truly great defense. What say you?
Brian Batko
12:46
I don't think Barron has been particularly good, but yeah, Bush and Fitzpatrick really change the complexion of this thing down the middle. Nelson has been terrific on the outside. And the DL/pass-rush can dominate games, as we've seen. Positives all around, really.

What a difference a day makes, eh?  Are the Steelers finding their "identity" now?
Brian Batko
12:46
Their identity might be that they can win against sub-.500 teams?

Defense is starting to look better and better every week. Offense is still a serious work in progress. What bothers me is the first possession of every game on O is so predictable. Pass on 1st down usually incomplete...run on 2nd down for a loss and throw on third down either incomplete or for short yards... punt. That has happened every game this year on Offense's 1st possession. Was quite the same last year as well. Where is the creative part from OC???
Brian Batko
12:47
I'll tell him to run the fumblerooskie next time on their first drive!
What the Duck
12:47
After last nights game do you see Duck getting more first team reps and them getting rid of Ben...just kidding.  However, do you think the 2 and 3 QBs we have are promising enough for Colbert to focus on other needs in next year's draft?
Brian Batko
12:48
Yeah, for sure. No need to draft a QB in 2020.

12:48
Bush looks a lot like Joey Porter.
Brian Batko
12:48
I don't know about that, but he's doing the 55 proud. Porter's legacy was complicated a bit by his coaching tenure and off-field incidents, but he sure was fun to watch as an outside linebacker.

Justin Layne tried to pull a fast one on the punt. Almost got away with it too. Why wasn't a penalty enforced?
Brian Batko
12:49
I was confused by that too. Savvy attempt by a rookie to pull that one off. And he nearly got away with it too! (Scooby Doo villain voice)

As a Steeler fan it was great seeing the stadium filled with black and gold, but as an NFL fan that was embarrassing. Why would anyone in LA connect to the Chargers? The NFL has crapped on their fan base in California in my opinion. Good to know the Steelers will never move, or will they?
Brian Batko
12:50
Eventually, with advances in science and modern technology, every NFL team will play on Jupiter

12:50
Devin Bush is the best Rookie Defensive player we have has since who....?
Brian Batko
12:51
Ehh, TJ Watt was still good as a rookie. But Bush is in pole position to win DROY. Should be between him and the Bosa in SF. I can never remember which one is which. I think he's Nick.

3 dropped int's last night by Chickillo, Hilton and Haden. How bad would Putt have won if they'd held onto the ball?
Brian Batko
12:52
That's right, I forgot about Chickillo's dropped INT. That one was much worse than Hilton's.
Jason Jones
12:52
Hey Brian thanks for the chat. It was a fun game last night but I'm a realist too. That wasn't KC or NE spreading us out and going up tempo. But I did like the fight and the energy the team had last night. Do you think we win the next three games at home?
Brian Batko
12:53
Thank you, Jason. The chat would be nothing without you loyal readers. And yeah, it wasn't KC or NE, but it was still Philip Rivers with a half-dozen legitimate weapons at his disposal. Bad OL though, and it showed. I'll say the Steelers win the next two but lose to the other team from LA. Not that they're looking like their Super Bowl selves either at this point.

Any word on what was wrong with Bush when he was obviously hurting pretty badly for a bit?
Brian Batko
12:53
Looked like an ankle and he walked it off

Maybe you as a reporter/journalist can answer this question: why do fans gravitate towards back-up players?  Especially back-up QBs.  During the Cowher and Noll years, I don't remember getting excited about a back-up QBs (Stoudt, Woodley, Jim Miller, Tomczak, etc)

The O-line last night was spectacular in both the passing and running games. What changed from earlier in the season?
Brian Batko
12:54
They must've brought back Mike Munchak to be a shadow assistant
sean
12:55
Good afternoon Brian! thanks for your time...was it just me or were the TEs mainly there to block last night and maybe thats why the running game looked a lil stronger? thanks again have a great week!
Brian Batko
12:55
You too, sean. They're definitely allowing the Steelers to play more 12 personnel, which they were really good in last year with Jesse James. Using Xavier Grimble as your second TE wasn't nearly as encouraging.
Sidney
12:56
Boswell was money yet again. Time to sign him to another extension!
Brian Batko
12:56
One hundred percent on the year, can't argue with that. Would've been interesting to see if he'd hit the long one when the Steelers punted late.
Rudolph
12:56
Steelers have the next 3 at home. Sounds like 5-4 to me. Your thoughts?
Brian Batko
12:57
So the Steelers will be 7-8 going into Week 17 at Baltimore? Yeah, I think that's realistic.

Rivers is the father of 10 if I recall correctly... Was that fatherly 'advice' he was giving Hilton at the end?
Brian Batko
12:58
He said Hilton was waving at the LA sideline and that he was just sticking up for his team.

Good game until foolish deep pass that was intercepted. It gave a beaten team life and a spark. Offense was chewing up yards and clock until that play call. What was an easy win became a nail biter.
Brian Batko
12:58
And then Hunter Henry got me 8 billion fantasy points, so that was nice

It was nice see that DuPree showed up to play.  Every week he seems to be more involved.  Do you think this can continue?
