Trade them for players who are much worse at football but calmly hand the ball back to the ref when they don't make a catch.

Brian:  this is probably nitpicking against an offense that has numerous problems, but doesn't it seem like most of the shotgun snaps are very low and slow to get back to KP?  This can't be helping the cause as every pass play seems to take that extra fraction of a second to even get started.

Yeah, Mason Cole is not having his best season in any respect, be it snapping or blocking. Very nice fellow, can definitely be an NFL player still, but a clear area to upgrade.

Many will overlook the fact that the Steelers offense was offensive, woefully predictable and inept for 3 quarters against the Rams. Do you believe the media and fans will hear the "company line" from both Tomlin & Canada this week again that the "offense is close" and that "we need to start the game better"?  That said, I was at SoFi yesterday and most of the stadium workers were saying, "Welcome to Pittsburgh" since the majority of fans there were Steelers fans!

The company line is that they don't care how they win as long as they win. Like it or not, this is the philosophy and has been for a while, especially in the post-Ben era. If that's a temporary band-aid, then OK, I guess that's understandable. If the powers that be believe this is sustainable, I'd have to shake my head at that.

Brian writing today from the pool at the W south beach where the Steelers game was on local Miami tv.   Was it really crazy loud with Steelers fans as it seemed on tv ?
Brian Batko

Gee, thanks Tom. One thing about being in the press box is that it's always hard to get a feel for stadium noise. I didn't even get to hear the halftime Ice Cube concert, which was a bummer for me personally.

Bradshaw dissing Pickett at halftime seemed wrong to me. What do you think?
Did you see Canada drumming his fingers after the Harris TD? He seemed peeved again that Kenny changed the play on him. Agree or disagree?

Didn't see the halftime show, but no, I don't agree that Canada's reaction means anything, be it the one against the Ravens or this one. I asked around after the game about that check Pickett made at the line of scrimmage on Najee's touchdown run and all parties involved indicated that play was set up to be adjusted by Pickett once he saw the Rams' front, and he simply communicated the alert he needed to for it to work. That's called offensive football, baby!

Hi Brian thanks for the chats.  So has JPJ always been a poor tackler throughout his college career?  His ball skills are great but the whiffs on tackles is making me a little worried.  Is this something the coaching staff can get corrected?  Maybe he needs to spend a little quality family time with his dad in a tackling ring.
Brian Batko

His tackling was definitely viewed by some as a weakness coming out of Penn State, but I don't share your concerns. He's a rookie adjusting to life in the NFL. The size, the frame, the bloodlines, the willingness to stick his nose in there, all of that tells me he'll be fine in the long run.

When Ben used to come alive in 4Q we said it was because he was a great winner. When Kenny does it we ask what is the problem
Brian Batko
1:58
Your point is well taken, but let's be honest, Ben was a great winner early and often in his career. Sure, he had a fantastic defense and run game helping him out, but you earn a certain amount of equity when you accomplish all he did. Pickett hasn't done that yet. Also let's not forget that Ben was also downright prolific for long stretches of his career, too.

Despite the win and solid performance by the defense, I thought the ILB were quiet and largely ineffective. We just kept watching Minkah fly past them from 5 yards down field to make plays. Doesn't seem like any ILB's wanted to hit the holes and make plays. Holcomb's stat line shows 8 tackles (only three solo), but I'd venture to say first contact was probably 3-4 yards down field on average. Do you think the Steelers need more from this group, especially in the run game? We know they're not great pass coverage guys, but they're not looking to hot in run support either, which is obviously needed in a 3-4 scheme.

Not as noticeable as they were in the Ravens game, but I didn't really expect them to have as many chances against a pass-happy team like the Rams. Could've been better against a bunch of mediocre running backs, but hey, Minkah Fitzpatrick is a missile. I think his run-stopping is more of a testament to him than an indictment of the ILBs.

Good afternoon Brian What do you think about The Play of Jaylen Warren it was nice to see him score yesterday
Brian Batko

He's a breath of fresh air, not just what he does on the field but his jubilation for Najee Harris when the starter scores, his unassuming humility after games when he praises just about everyone except himself. That guy impacts winning and is a likable football player.

RE: Pickett-Cousins comparison.   I think he's more like Brett Farve - the gun slinger.  Sometimes things go sideways, but when the chips are down he comes out shooting and wins.

Geez, that's pretty lofty to compare him to a Hall of Famer. But if there are any Pickett-Favre similarities, I just hope they don't extend off the field, am I right?
2:03
OK folks, that's all the time we have for today. I gotta go catch a flight back home to Pittsburgh. The Steelers are 4-2. Really, they are. Talk to you soon.
