Should the Cordarrelle Patterson experiment be over?
Tall Guy
12:45
Does Patterson give us anything?  He doesnt seem to move as well as our other two backs and his 6 catches this season doesnt show me we need him in the game for his hands.  Why not go with the two headed monster?
Brian Batko
12:45
Yes, unless there's an injury in the backfield. He surprised me in the Colts game and even his long run in the Detroit preseason game, but as much as I like the guy and appreciate his career, it might be a wrap for him. As Tall Guy said, I'm not sure what skillset he provides at this stage of his career.

Hi Brian.  As annoying as it was to see Garrett celebrating his sacks on Thursday, the think that jumped out to me is how the Browns move him around from snap to snap, run him on stunts, etc., which makes it harder to double team him, chip him, etc., while the Steelers rarely move Watt to get him away from the doubles and chips.  Does he not want to move around, or do the Steelers not have those kinds of schemes in the defensive playbook?
Brian Batko
12:47
Watt probably would never say he doesn't want to move around, but my sense is he's comfortable rushing from the left side and feels like he's perfected his craft there to the point that if it's not broke why mess with it? This week might get the coaches talking about whether it's broke, or at least not operating at full capacity. So we'll see.

Over/under 350 yards passing for Burrow against us on Sunday?
Brian Batko

He's done it in back to back weeks vs. Chargers and Ravens, but I'll go under.

Hello Brian.  The play calling vs. the Browns was hard to watch at times.  1st, 2nd, 3rd... Run, Run, Pass...  I kept hoping for play action, pass to the flat or a drag route play to beat the pass rush on 1st and 2nd downs.  The calls did show me that winning may be more about scheme than personnel with this team.  So, why do the Steelers seem to always play down to the teams that they should easily beat?
Brian Batko
12:52
Hi, Jay. To me, your premise is flawed. They didn't play down to the Raiders, just blew them out. They beat the Jets easily, though they actually were underdogs in that game to a 2-5 team. Winning in the NFL is rarely simple because talent is spread across the league, 14-team postseason keeps more teams involved and engaged, and guys have contracts to play for.

Morning, and happy Thanksgiving. I get that the team does not have an elite QB and Mr. Tomlin's formula keeps the team competitive and games close, but do you think this team can really win 1-2 playoff games without opening up the O and taking a little more "risk"?  Thank you!
Brian Batko
12:53
Yeah, I've been fairly skeptical about the idea of winning big in January/February with defense and a power run game. That strikes me as an identity that can win you one or two, perhaps benefit you in the cold-weather win-or-go home games, but eventually you're probably gonna have to keep pace with the superhuman QBs who can dice up even the most complete defenses.

Is Thursday's debacle a "Tomlin game" or a result of playing the Raven 4 days before?
Brian Batko
12:56
As bad as Tomlin's record is on Thursdays, it's even better on Mondays. I have to subscribe to the notion that as long as he's been doing this, his teams gain an advantage with an extra day to prepare situationally, game plan-wise, etc. and lose that edge to some extent when you have a quick turnaround.

Hi Brian, after watching another Steelers loss to an awful team, can we cool the talk about Tomlin being coach of the year? We are most likely looking at another December collapse. Can we actually see 3 more wins this season? I don’t… 8-2 and will finish 10-7…..
Brian Batko
12:59
Hey. I still would have him in the conversation, but Andy Reid, Sean McDermott, Jim Harbaugh, Dan Campbell, Sean Payton, Kevin O'Connell and even Nick Sirianni should probably be in that discussion, too. It wouldn't surprise me if the Steelers go 2-6 the rest of the way, no. Or even 1-5, not to get too morbid...

I do not see a good end to this season. with a suspect secondary and the competition level raised, I can see us only winning 1 or 2 more games...

To me, it's mainly more about the competition than the Steelers playing bad ball. They could play good ball and still get beat by the Eagles, Chiefs, Ravens, even Bengals if they figure things out at all defensively.

Well, OK, I didn't mean to end the chat on such a dour note. It just happened. But you come here for the real talk, the objective outlook, so we did that. Thanks for stopping by, enjoy your Thanksgivings and be safe if you're on the roads this week.
