Brian Batko's Steelers chat: 12.14.20

Yeah, Diontae Johnson is just impossibly slippery at the line of scrimmage. That's always been his best trait. But what good does that do if you can't reel it in? It's strange to me that Chase Claypool isn't playing more, because I think he's the best of both worlds. He ran fewer snaps than Washington last night. Hilton will continue to be heavily involved, for sure. As for Tuitt, a rare quiet night for him. Saw him get a little pressure late on Allen but that was about it.

Is Matt Canada unreachable by the Press?
Brian Batko
2:45
I requested an interview with Canada about a month and was told the team would begin doing interviews with various assistants. We talked to the OL and DL coaches that week, and none others since, perhaps due to all the wonky scheduling. So, to answer your question, kind of?

If you are being truly honest with yourself, can you see these Steelers making it to the Super Bowl let alone winning it all? Thanks for chats Brian.

Yes, I still can. Because, truly, the NFL is a crazy league and crazy things can happen. Ben is bad right now, might be bad going forward, but I'm not ready to write him off completely. So, if he gets back in a groove and this defense heals up, sure, they can still go all the way. They aren't the favorite, though, and I never thought they were.

This offense is Randy's at this point, it looks the exact same as it did last year with Duck/Mason at the helm... at what point does Tomlin let Canada have more influence in the game plan and play calling?
Brian Batko
2:48
I'm not sure how much influence any coach has when Ben and the receivers are out there drawing up plays in the sand.

Is DeCastsro playing hurt or has he permanently lost a step?
Brian Batko
2:49
Could be both. He's not one to make excuses, though.

Hi Brian-  Thanks for the game time chats.  Sadly - and I mean no offense- the chats are now best part of watching games. This will no doubt be a one and done year.  Looking forward ...I hope 2 of top 3 draft picks are OL.  Lack of run game starts right there. Now injuries will made an already weak unit weaker.
Brian Batko

I'm not offended whatsoever, Yates.

Tomlin said last night after the game that the offensive woes can be fixed in a week.  If that is true, why havent those problems been fixed over the last three or four weeks?
Brian Batko
2:51
You could argue that their schedule has been thrown off that they've hardly been normal weeks. But yes, Tomlin more or less promised that they'd roll up their sleeves and get the running game fixed. Still waiting on that one, right? As for the why, it's fair to ask if they simply don't have the personnel right now to fix it.

Brian - in more trouble than we thought.  Can't run block at all and can't pass pro more than 2.5 seconds...ouch. Is there a fix?
Brian Batko
2:52
Play better. Just ... play better.

Thanks very much for these chats, Brian.
Will the last game of the year see the Steelers playing the Browns for the division title?
Brian Batko
2:53
*rubs crystal ball* No.
The Next Head Coach of a Team
2:54
Howdy sir. What does it say when the Steelers coordinators are never ever in the conversation for head coaching jobs? Can we get someone decent for a change, once?
Brian Batko
2:54
It says that Mike Tomlin built a staff with plenty of experienced coaches not considered hot-shot up-and-comers, and perhaps did that with stability and loyalty in mind. Whether or not they're "decent" is up for debate.

Can we panic now?
Brian Batko
2:55
Yep. Steelers should just pack it in, hang up the cleats, don't even show up for any more games. Concede the division and their playoff spot. I'll find something else to do in the meantime. Maybe cover some Duquesne and/or RMU hoops
2:57
Just kidding, of course. But wow, has it been an hour already? I gotta get a move on with some other tasks. Appreciate everyone stopping in, despite the doom and gloom. Ray Fittipaldo will be back tomorrow at 1 p.m. for more therapy.
