Cardinals OiR Chat: 2022-23

Ivan Herrera traded at the deadline this year?
Anthony Franco
11:31
Yeah I think this happens if Herrera's hitting well enough in Memphis that another team still buys him as a potential #1 catcher

The Cardinals seem to have consistent success with lower draft picks and even resurrecting unwanted players. They crank out a lot of major leaguers. Do you have any idea what sort of contrarian internal metrics they might be relying on?
Anthony Franco
11:35
I don't know if it's a data thing or if they're just really good at scouting (probably some amount of both) but they're great at finding guys who understand the strike zone. Donovan, Nootbaar, Edman to some extent (though he's also a great defender) were all mid-round draftees who didn't have overwhelming physical tools on draft day but maximized their skillset because they pick good pitches to swing at
11:36
The hit tool is the toughest thing to evaluate and tanks a lot of players with very promising physical acumen, but St. Louis has a really good track record in that regard
Hornsby
11:36
Contreras/Gorman the DH platoon?
Anthony Franco
11:37
I think Carlson's more likely to pick up the at-bats against LHP
11:38
Probably by playing the outfield and giving one of Nootbaar, Walker or O'Neill a half-rest day

Mo recently stated that he is looking to trade from the surplus of LH relievers on the 40 man to create room for Walker.  Obviously any move would be a depth piece/prospect not on the 40 man. Is there really anything of value to be had from a trade of Genesis or JoJo?
Anthony Franco
11:39
Not really. Maybe a low-level prospect who's of moderate interest, doubt they'd get anyone from another team's top 30 prospects for either

Thank you for the chat! Appreciate talking Cardinals! I think Jimmy Edmonds dropping off the ballot in his first year was a great travesty (relative to baseball type things). I think Yadi was great but not sold he is a sure fire HOFer. I think he should be in but after Edmonds debacle I am not counting chickens. All that to say, what current Cardinals are HOF worthy? Wainwright, Goldschmidt, Arenado? Any of those you would bet the house on getting the call?
Anthony Franco
11:41
Agree on Edmonds. I don't know if I'd have voted for him but he'd be an edge case. Would've been nice to see him stick around on the ballot for a while
11:42
Arenado feels like a lock to me. Goldy wouldn't get in yet but he's trending that way and should make it. I think Wainwright's a little bit short
Tony
11:43
Thanks for the chats. I think the pitching is bifurcated. The starters are going to be OK/solid. I think the bullpen is going to be top 5 in the league. In the scheme of the modern game, for the postseason would you rather have a couple of TOR horses or 5 or 6 lights out relievers? Both obviously but we aren't the Dodgers, Padres, Mets...
Anthony Franco
11:44
I'd lean towards the latter and have an aggressive hook with the starters given the amount of off days. But in general, I think the idea that any one way of building a roster being conducive to playoff success tends to be overstated
11:46
We've seen teams like the mid-2010s Royals win with a couple elite relievers and a bunch of contact hitters. The 2019 Nationals did it with like four starting pitchers and Daniel Hudson

11:46
How long can they go with Knizner, with not hitting? surely there is somebody better out there?
Anthony Franco
11:47
I'd guess they go with Tres Barrera over Knizner this week
Yepez
11:47
Do you think he makes it back to the big league roster? Does he have a future in St. Louis given his defensive limitations? Is he a trade chip?
Anthony Franco
11:48
Yepez is a depth guy for me. Nice bench piece, solid power bat to have around when he has minor league options and the kind of player who can crack a playoff roster as a pinch hitter
11:49
Given the lack of position and the extremely aggressive approach, I don't think he's an everyday player (either in St. Louis or the kind of guy another team would give up a ton in trade for)
Kevin
11:49
Seems to be a logjam of players without a position right now or in the corner OF/DH role. Who would you trade out of the following for some pitching/prospects - Yepez, Burleson, Gorman, Carlson/O'Neill, Moises Gomez?
Anthony Franco
11:51
I could see Alec Burleson getting moved at some point
Jim
11:51
What does a “successful” season for Gorman look like? What does a “breakout” year for him look like?
Anthony Franco
11:52
I'd consider a .315 OBP with a .450 slug and 15-20 homers successful. Breakout season probably involves cutting the strikeout rate to like 27% and pushing the OBP around .350
11:53
Maybe a little less than that if he proves he can play second base, but I'm skeptical on that one

11:54
Is Jordan Walker as "can't miss" as Julio Rodriguez when it comes to the hit tool?
Anthony Franco
11:56
Not really fair to expect to hit the ground running the way Julio did. I think Rodríguez had a little better floor at this time last year than Walker does now because he's an elite baserunner and above-average defensive center fielder

Does the Cardinals offense have a legitimate chance at being the best in baseball this year?
Anthony Franco
11:58
They were fifth in runs and wRC+ last year. Walker's up now and Contreras should be a big offensive boost over Yadi. I don't think #1 is entirely out of the question but it requires MVP-caliber performances from Goldy and Arenado again

Are Woodford's changes real? Is he going to have a little more in the K tank? Can he be a viable top five starter or is he just depth piece, long term? Thanks!
Anthony Franco
12:01
It's always going to be more of a ground-ball emphasis than strikeouts with Woodford but I buy him as a #4/5 starter, sure. The control's good and the sinker/slider combo works against right-handed hitters

Oh my, I have been waiting for this chat. A couple of questions. 1. Does Tyler take center? 2. Jordan Walker higher/lower .300 BO? Better 2nd, Donovan or Edman?
Anthony Franco
12:02
O'Neill's got center to begin with. I'd take Walker under a .300 batting average but over on OBP. Edman's a better overall player than Donovan but he'll be the starting shortstop
Redbird
12:03
Better defensive 3rd baseman? Rolen or Arenado?
Anthony Franco
12:04
You guys are probably better qualified to answer that than I am. I didn't see most of Rolen's prime

"if Gorman proves he can play second base"   ....  Isn't second easier than third?  If he can play 3B, I gotta think he can play 2B.
Anthony Franco
12:07
Not sure I'd agree with that. I think they might be equally challenging overall but second base feels like more of a range/footwork based position (particularly for the work around the bag) while third is more about reaction time and arm strength, which is where I'd feel a little better about Gorman

How do you see Libertore fitting in this year? Has he regressed or just not progressed as originally thought.
Anthony Franco
12:11
In retrospect, I think he was a little overvalued early in his career because the fastball and curveball don't play off one another all that well. It's a lower spin fastball that works better towards the bottom of the strike zone than the top. That negates some of the value he gets from the curveball, since it becomes easier for opposing hitters to differentiate than if he had one of the higher-spin fastballs that stays true towards the top of the zone for longer
