Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 10/22/19

Steve Adams

Apologies on the lack of a chat last week -- we had some lengthy meetings consisting of offseason projections and preparation, and it superseded the weekly chat. I'll be back on schedule moving forward

Any Free Agents the Orioles night look at signing?
Steve Adams
3:30
No one that exciting, though I do think they'd be well served to at least find one stable source of innings to help anchor the rotation alongside Bundy and Means. Can't really count on Cobb returning to health or form at this point, and the upper minors are thin, even if guys like Keegan Akin seem like a lock to debut in '20.

Also more corner OFs available than teams in need... if the O's can give someone like Avi Garica or Corey Dickerson or whoever it may be some consistent at-bats if the market falls through, I'd support that as well.

But if you're looking for a notable name they'll sign, it's going to be a pretty disappointing winter.

Do you think Joe Girardi is a lock for Phillies manager
Steve Adams
3:30
There's no lock until they announce the move.
Bob

Castellanos on a two-year high AAV deal to Atlanta?
Steve Adams
3:31
I think he's got more years than that waiting in free agency, even though I'm guessing MLBTR's prediction for him will be lower than predictions you'll see most other places.
Mr Red
3:31
Grandal, resign Iglesias, and ? to help the Reds offense?
Steve Adams
3:32
I think they'll be in on Grandal, but they're going to have plenty of competition -- and there's no good reason for the Brewers to let him get away.

Reds seem like a team that'll add a corner OF this winter ... could see them on any of Ozuna, Puig, Avi Garcia, Castellanos, etc.

Who in Astros PR decided they wanted to get fired alongside their Assitant GM?
Steve Adams
3:35
Houston's handling of the whole thing has been baffling. They plainly called Stephanie Apstein a liar, threw her credibility (and Sports lllustrated's credibility) under the bus. Then, some 18 hours later, after a dozen others have confirmed the accounts, they issue a non-apology that doesn't even acknowledge the manner in which they tried to harm her career.

Saying "I'm sorry if anyone was offended by my actions" isn't taking accountability and isn't an apology, and failing to offer a retraction of a TEAM-ISSUED comment that accused her of "fabricating" a story is just that -- a total failure. They should be embarrassed.

Chase Anderson's option at $8.5M.  Do I value starting pitching that much?  Do I value this starting pitcher that much?
Steve Adams
3:36
(Brewers GM = David Stearns, for those unaware)

I don't think they'll put that high a price on Anderson when they don't let him pitch more than five innings at a time, typically.
3:37
I can see him being bought out and non-tendered.

Will there be a MLBTR FA prediction contest this year?
Steve Adams
3:37
That's the plan, yes. We'll release our annual Top 50 and predictions shortly after the World Series and then have the contest up shortly thereafter

how about a poll? Who wins WS?

Nats won't pick up Gomes' option so what will he sign for? Possible destinations?
Steve Adams
3:40
There are tons of teams in need of some help behind the plate...

Astros, Rangers, Angels, White Sox, Rays, Rox, Brewers, Reds, Braves

Any of those clubs could use a backup, at the very least. Most could use a higher-end piece than Gomes, though there won't be one available for all them.

What big reliever is a f.a for yankees if they lose Chapman
Steve Adams
3:40
I think they'll re-sign Chapman after he opts out (or tack an extra year onto the deal before he gets to the point of opting out)
Michael Scott
3:41
Braves sign Grandal, let Keuchel walk, exercise Teheran's option and flip him for minimal return to clear salary, and bring in Wheeler.  Reasonable offseason plan?
Steve Adams
3:41
None of those ideas are crazy to me in a vacuum. All of them coming together, while it'd make for a nice offseason, is unlikely. (As is any sequence of three, four or five roster moves coming together in conjunction)

What would Travis Shaw cost in a trade?
Steve Adams
3:42
Next to nothing. He's a non-tender candidate as it is and might just be available to sign cheaply as a free agent five weeks from now.

Odds Ozuna accepts qualifying Offer?
Steve Adams
3:46
After talking through the potential market for corner OFs last week, I think he'd have to consider it more strongly than I'd have originally expected. There are tons of corner alternatives -- Castellanos, Puig, Avisail, Corey Dickerson -- and there are several contenders who aren't going to spend heavily at all this winter, particularly not on a position where there's so much supply. (That list didn't even include trade candidates, of which there are several).

I think it'd be in his best interest to accept, but I'm not fully convinced he'd do so.

Whatever happened to the investigation of yankee pitcher German? It seems like MLB treated him as guilty until proven innocent.
Steve Adams
3:47
Every player is placed on paid administrative leave in these situations. He wasn't treated any differently. His leave runs through the end of the World Series, at which point the league will likely be finished (or close to finished) with its investigation.
Eppler
3:47
If I fail to land Cole, is this an unsuccessful offseason?
Steve Adams
3:50
(Angels GM Billy Eppler)

Not at all. If the bidding goes insane, taking a "sign him at all costs" approach doesn't do the team any long-term favors. (See: Pujols, Albert). The Angels need to add some high-end pitching, for sure, but it doesn't have to be Cole and Cole alone. If Strasburg opts out and they sign him and Wheeler for a comparable total, for instance, I wouldn't call that a mistake. Nor would it be a mistake to sign a lesser arm than Cole and trade for another quality starter.

If the Angels come away without any meaningful upgrades and again take some fliers on one-year candidates, then yeah, it's an unsuccessful winter.

where has Blake Swihart gone? He isn't a strong defender anywhere but why not just let him catch and focus on that? He is in need of a reclamation project
Steve Adams
3:51
He was injured for much of the season once again. He went unclaimed on waivers when the D-backs outrighted him, and he's a free agent.
George Springer
3:51
Evan Gattis is going to be part of the opening ceremonies tonight. Does this mean he is done? Is he retired?
Steve Adams
3:52
He finally commented today saying he's not retired but also didn't have a strong desire to play. He's not closing the door but it doesn't sound like there's a return coming anytime soon

3:53
do you think the yankees let didi walk?
Steve Adams
3:53
I think he'll sign elsewhere, yeah. They have enormous infield depth and don't need to pay a premium for a player who right now is a bounceback candidate. This year's OBP woes were pretty glaring
Nationals
3:54
Any pending free agents the Nats bring back next year? Parra? Dozier? Gomes?
Steve Adams
3:55
I'll be stunned if they don't keep one of Rendon or Strasburg (who I do think is opting out). Wouldn't be shocked if they find a way to keep both. Zimmerman will probably be back on a lesser deal once his option is bought out. Howie Kendrick makes a lot of sense to come back, too. Daniel Hudson as well. Less sold on the three you mentioned.
