Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 10/22/19

Dodger's GM
3:56
What will it take for us to keep Ryu?  Is he to old to warrant a multi-year deal?
Steve Adams
3:56
A multi-year deal seems like a certainty. Injuries aside, he's got three years waiting, in my view.
Jerry Dipoto
3:57
Do I surprise everybody and add significant pieces this off-season? I didn't do a full tear-down for a reason. ML roster has talent, and there's salary space to make big moves, namely for a starter(s).
Steve Adams
3:58
(Jerry Dipoto = Mariners GM)

I think they'll add a couple of starters but not high-end names. A durable innings guy like Tanner Roark and maybe an upside play (Alex Wood, perhaps?) would make sense.
Johnny

If the Angels sign Cole and a lower level starter say Odorizzi do they say goodbye to Calhoun to save money and take advantage of the glut of corner OFers.  In this situation do they also go after Rendon or is Zobrist coming over?
Steve Adams
3:59
I think Calhoun's option will be bought out, and I can't fathom a scenario where they get both Rendon and Cole.

The Braves have to at least be semi-serious players in the Cole sweepstakes, right? They can't rely on volatile young arms to anchor the rotation for another year....right?
Steve Adams
4:01
I don't think the Braves are going to be serious players at the record levels Cole is going to command.
There are certainly other names to consider: Wheeler, Bumgarner, Odorizzi, trade candidates, etc.

4:02
Will/should the Rockies sign a catcher?
Steve Adams
4:03
They desperately need help behind the dish, but the Rockies have basically no money to spend this winter. They already have more money committed to the 2020 roster than they spent on the 2019 roster (including arbitration projections)

4:03
What kind of return could the M's get for Vogelbach?.
Steve Adams
4:04
Not much of one. He'a a pure DH -- maybe a 1B if a team is optimistic -- and there aren't many teams with that need.
Archer's Option
4:05
Do the buccos pick it up for $9MM?  Seems like a bad investment for a frugal franchise.
Steve Adams
4:05
Definitely. Even if they've decided they're done with him, another club would take a chance on his arm for 1/9 with a second-year team option.
King's Court
4:07
Do you think a team like the Astros would take a chance on Felix and try to turn him around? I'm not convinced he can't have a big rebound.
Steve Adams
4:07
Some team -- not the Mariners -- will take a chance on him
Grantland Rice-a-roni
4:08
If Ozuna walks, do the Cardinals take a 1 yr flier on Puig?
Steve Adams
4:09
Possible, sure. Could also just turn LF over to Tyler O'Neill. Other options I can see on one-year deals ... Corey Dickerson, Avi Garcia.
Bumgarner Livestock
4:12
How will turning down my QO affect my FA?
Steve Adams
4:13
With Bumgarner, I don't think it'll matter too much. There'll be a few teams who don't want to punt the pick, but I still think he's got a strong four-year deal out there.
I Like Making Guesses

Angels land Cole for 7 years at $210-225 million w/ at least one opt-out & a club option for year eight. They still need another starter on that staff... would 3 years at $48 million be enough to land Ryu?
Steve Adams
4:13
I think you're light on Cole.
BVW
4:14
Presuming Wheeler declines the QO, who is my fifth starter? internal candidate, trade, or sign?
Steve Adams
4:17
The offseason prep I referenced last week led Jeff, Connor and I to talk a lot about the Mets... I don't really even see how they can comfortably add a low-end fifth starter. Jeff turned that into a post and laid things out pretty well here:

Do you see Madbum and Wheeler getting the same offers?
Steve Adams
4:19
I think some clubs will prefer one to the other, but I'd prefer Wheeler and think he's going to command a larger deal. He's still trending upward; I don't think teams feel that way of Bumgarner
Rob F
4:21
Where does Rich Hill ultimately sign?
Steve Adams
4:21
He's pretty strongly hinted he'd prefer to stay with the Dodgers or land back in Boston. We have him back to Boston at the moment.
Andrew Friedman
4:21
Will 8 years/$250M land me Gerrit Cole?
Steve Adams
4:22
(Andrew Friedman = Dodgers pres of baseball ops)

I think 8/250 is plausible for Cole, but the Dodgers' preference has been to make shorter-term offers at super-premium annual values.
Castellanos
4:23
Will the bidding take me to JDM level, especially if he doesn’t opt out?
Steve Adams
4:25
No way that happens. He's not as good a hitter as Martinez, firstly. Secondly, the demand won't be there. Most AL teams have their DH spot accounted for, and there aren't going to be any teams comfortable committing 5 seasons to his glove. I can't see him getting more than 4, personally, and our collective projection will come in south of that most likely.

4:25
What—if any—free agent(s) do you think the Giants go after? ny chance they spring for Rendon (and move Longoria to 1B)? Or Cole? Or even Ozuna?
Steve Adams
4:27
I like Ozuna as a fit there. Farhan Zaidi spoke about adding power than plays at Oracle Park, and Ozuna is among the best free-agent hitters in terms of pull power (and really, in all of MLB over the past three seasons). Can't see Rendon or Cole
Eddie Rosario
4:28
Am I playing for a new team this spring? There are a lot of young whippersnappers coming up behind me, and even though I might bring a lot to the team, they need pitching really badly.
Steve Adams
4:30
I don't think Rosario is all that crucial to the Twins -- poor OBP skills and his defensive numbers have completely collapsed. But for those reasons, he's not going to bring back a ton in a trade, either.
4:32
Ok, I have to wrap up for the week. Jeff will chat later this week, Mark on Sunday and then Connor on Monday. I'm on Twitter @Adams_Steve.

Have a good rest of your week, and enjoy the World Series!
