Chat With MLBTR's Anthony Franco: 11/11/21

Do the Marlins actually make some good moves for the lineup and is moving me to CF a viable option?
Anthony Franco
3:40
I think Miami's going to trade a starter for a controllable position player -- something along the lines of the Kirk/López swap suggested earlier in the chat
3:41
I don't see why they'd move Jazz to CF though. He's a good second baseman

Haven't heard a tonne about Steven Matz. Will he garner a fair amount of interest?
Anthony Franco
3:41
He's already been tied to Boston, Angels, Detroit and the Jays. Half the league will be in on him, and I think he gets a three-year deal ultimately
3:42
Matz is part of a group (DeSclafani, Alex Wood, arguably even Kikuchi) of capable mid-rotation guys. They'll all have a lot of interest, but I'm guessing teams will line them all up differently
2022 AL East
3:43
Which team do you see winning the AL East in 2022?
Anthony Franco
3:44
Could literally see anyone except the Orioles. I'll go Blue Jays for now but that's obviously dependent on what happens in the next few months

You predicted that Freeman would sign with the Red Sox. Care to give more insight about that bold prediction?
Anthony Franco
3:45
That was mostly about symbolically taking the field on Freddie. It's really hard to imagine him elsewhere, of course, but that's been true of other franchise legends who've left (Pujols most notably)
3:46
The Braves are already at last year's payroll mark, essentially. It'll go up based on the World Series win, of course, but they also need some work in the outfield and arguably the rotation
So I don't think it's a foregone conclusion Freeman comes back
3:47
If Freeman leaves, then you're looking at big-market teams that move things around to add an impact player (Padres, Yankees could also do this). The Red Sox have J.D. Martinez off the books after next season, and their incumbent first baseman Bobby Dalbec wasn't great this year
3:48
So I think they could sign Freeman, let J.D. walk next winter, and have Freddie and top prospect Triston Casas split 1B/DH in 2023 and beyond

Sanchez + low tier prospect for Contreras?
Anthony Franco
3:49
Not going to be appealing to the Cubs. Sánchez is a free agent after next season, and if the Cubs are moving Contreras, it's because they don't think they're competing in 2022

Are clubs hoping Nick Martinez is a Miles Mikolas 2.0?
Anthony Franco
3:50
That'd be ideal obviously, but I think they're more expecting he's a capable 4th or 5th starter. He's not going to cost much, and if he gives you 140 innings of 4.30 ERA ball or something like that, he's a valuable piece of a pitching staff

Do you think the A’s could get Taylor Walls+ from TB for Montas?
Anthony Franco
3:50
I think the Rays would do that, yeah. Oakland might be able to beat that though

Thoughts on Ranger Saurez? Legit #2, maybe a 3 or did he already peak, catch lightning in a bottle, fads to 6+era?
Anthony Franco
3:52
I think he's a good #3 starter. Does pretty much everything well: throws strikes, gets a bunch of grounders, misses a decent amount of bats
He's not an ace and his ERA will probably regress by more than two runs next year just because it was great in 2021, but he's a good pitcher
Frank dont tank
3:52
did Frank Schwindel do enough to prohibit a Rizzo reunion?  The mlbtr projection for Rizz comes an awful lot lower than what the Cubs supposedly offered in an extension
Anthony Franco
3:53
I don't know that Schwindel really stands in the way of a Rizzo reunion, especially since I expect the new CBA will have an NL DH that'd give the Cubs a chance to still get him at-bats
3:54
If Rizzo ends up at 3/45 like we project, though, does it make sense for either side? Cubs fans would probably love it, but Rizzo's a declining player and the Cubs aren't especially close to contention. I think he winds up with an immediate contender

3:55
Jorge Polanco and the Mariners make a ton of sense. Matt Brash and Noelvi Marte .. Who says no ??
Anthony Franco
3:56
Man, I kind of love this one. I'm not sure either team would actually do it, since the Twins want to compete next year and the M's might not be quite ready to go all-in, but I think the value's pretty good on both sides

Are you a fan of the “tanking” in baseball?
Anthony Franco
3:57
It doesn't really bother me, honestly. I'm probably in the minority on that, but I'm mostly of the opinion that some teams have to be bad and I don't much care whether that's by design or because their efforts to contend flopped
3:58
I think the more frustrating situation is for a team like the Reds that's right on the doorstep of contention but tears it down at the last minute

What kind of prospect(s) could 2 yrs of Luis Castillo fetch? Could they get Julio Rodriguez from the playoff hopeful Mariners?
Anthony Franco
3:59
Speaking of which
I'm doing a deeper dive into Castillo for Front Office subscribers this week
But broadly speaking, I think he'll bring back two really good prospects, including one in the top 20 or 30 overall
But I don't think the Reds are getting a top five guy like J-Rod

Do I take the QO?
Anthony Franco
4:00
I doubt it. He's the best reliever in free agency IMO, should come fairly close to Liam Hendriks money
4:01
Ok everyone, that's all I've got time for today, since I have to take over the main feed from Mark
Thanks for all your questions! Sorry about the dozens of other good ones I didn't have time for
