Should the Jays look at adding Chafin?
Steve Adams
1:32
He's probably the best reliever on the market at this point. Every team should be looking at him.
Dreg
1:32
Now that the Twins have a SS.

What do they do about the starting 5? Does Kepler get moved for a SP?
Steve Adams
1:33
Kepler's not going to bring them an impactful starting pitcher on his own, but I could see moving him for bullpen help or in a package for something in the rotation.

No chance on Alcantara, but do I pull the trigger on a Pablo Lopez for Anthony Santander trade? Seems to make sense for both squads. What else do you think would need to be added to make this happen?
Steve Adams
1:36
I think this overvalues Santander and undervalues Lopez. Both have two years remaining and I'd much, much rather have Lopez. The general landscape of MLB front offices doesn't like the Santander skill set much (low-OBP, corner-only players whose offensive value is predicated on power and power alone).

Also, the Marlins already have too many corner OFs. They need a center fielder, and Santander isn't it.

If you want to suggest like ... Mullins for one of the younger and more controllable options (Luzardo, Cabrera), maybe there's a framework there, though probably not in a straight-up swap.

Any chance this deal falls apart too after a physical?
Steve Adams
1:38
Twins have already checked out his ankle/leg. I think it'll be done before too long this time around and Correa will stay in Minnesota.

Hey Steve, Does a 2023 World Series win for the Dodgers help legitimatize their 2020 WS Championship? I get it was a 60 game season and different than a normal season but I think it’s really unfair that a lot of people in the baseball world want to call it a Mickey Mouse Ring and say that it should have an asterisk next to it. Can’t we catch a break? I mean after what happened in 2017 we just really can’t catch a break LOL. Sorry for my rant just wanted to hear your thoughts. THANK YOU!!
Steve Adams

The same people ragging the Dodgers for winning the 2020 World Series would be trumpeting it if their own team won -- just as, if the Dodgers fell short, many Dodgers fans who feel jilted by criticism from others would be doing just that... criticizing the Rays or whoever else won
The Dodgers won the agreed-upon tournament that determined baseball's champion that year. If anything, they should get some credit for surviving the largest playoff field in MLB history, I think.
It's a legitimate title, and I don't really buy that anyone saying otherwise would maintain that viewpoint if their own team won it.

What kind of deal will Andrus get? Two months ago, I'd have said 1 year, $4M.
Steve Adams
1:42
I had him at like 2/15 before the season. I think Tim Dierkes was at like 1/7. Don't remember where Anthony and Darragh were at when we were chatting prior to the offseason.

Andrus was quietly worth 3 WAR per both B-Ref and FG last year. He can still play shortstop, and he hit reasonably well. Maybe it's viewed as too much of an outlier to get the second season, but he was a good player in '22. A 1/4 deal feels too light ... if he's taking one year it should be at least $7-8MM.
1:44
Red Sox announce Trevor Story had an internal brace procedure to repair the UCL in his right elbow. He'll miss time in 2023. Woof.

Could we grab a playoff spot? Pitching has really improved.
Steve Adams
1:45
It's not out of the realm of possibility, no. A lot depends on the health of their pitching, deGrom especially but also Eovaldi. Pretty remarkable how much better they've gotten more or less just by spending though, ha.

What does the equivalent of the 9.3 spent on Belt get in terms of available pitching left? RP or SP (note: I secretly love the Belt move)
Steve Adams
1:45
Could pretty clearly have offered that to Cueto and gotten him. He just agreed to 8.5 for one year.

I asked earlier about Gary Sanchez because I am curious how the Giants think they can go into the season with only Bart and Wynn
Steve Adams
1:48
They might not even have Wynns. They designated him for assignment to make room for Luke Jackson.

The Giants tend to pick their backup catchers off the scrap heap. That's how they got Wynns in the first place. I doubt it's a major area of concern for them right now. If they've determined Bart's the guy, they'll add a low-cost or waiver backup and go from there.

I'll say this: If I were them (or another club looking for a catcher), I'd be calling the Cardinals since Ivan Herrera no longer has a clear path to a prominent role with Willson Contreras in St. Louis for five years.
Austin Wynns
1:48
Wynns had a pretty solid season for a backup catcher. Were you surprised at the DFA?
Steve Adams
1:49
Not really. It was 177 PAs of roughly average offense for a catcher that came with career-best luck on balls in play despite making hard contact at a career-worst (and near bottom-of-the-league) rate.
1:50
I love rooting for guys like Wynns -- never a prospect, didn't debut until 27, not a high draft pick, grinded through the minors for like 6 years before getting a call-up....... but realistically, he sort of embodies the fungible backup catcher mold we see passed around on waivers a lot.
Retired?
1:51
I saw that the M’s announced their coaching staff for the upcoming season and Stephen Vogt was on the list. Has the player retired or am I confusing the names?
Steve Adams
1:52
Vogt announced his plans to retire back in September
The Mariners named him their quality control coach. We'll have it on the site before long here. Lots of news today, and I'm chatting, which takes me out as an option to write it up.

By moving Bryce Wilson and Zach Thompson, it feels to me like the Pirates are making room for pitchers that would come back in a Reynolds trade - I'm thinking Marlins or Rangers.  Thoughts?
Steve Adams
1:55
I think you're overthinking it. Wilson was DFA'ed to clear a roster spot for Jarlin Garcia. Thompson to clear one for Rich Hill. As I said before, I don't think Reynolds will be traded this winter.

We need a #1 starter. Badly. Not a former #1 or a could be #1 but is really a #4. We have big leaguers and intriguing minor league talent to send their way but we are having a tough time finding teams willing to part with their big arm(s). Are there any bona fide aces we could actually get?
Steve Adams
1:56
Most teams need a No. 1 starter. They're rarely available in trade, and the current market isn't an exception.
Michael Sozinho
1:57
What is the outlook on Mondesi this year? will he be 100% for spring training?
Steve Adams
1:58
Far as I know he'll be ready for Spring Training, yes, but the Royals can't reasonably count on him to be even a semi-regular contributor. I think whatever you get out of him is a bonus, and since he's a free agent next winter he'll probably be a trade chip this summer with a decent/healthy start.

Signing of Phillips looks like trade prep. Who might they be targeting?
Steve Adams
1:59
Looks more to me like they just wanted a premium defensive asset to back up their current, all right-handed outfield. Phillips is that.

Carrasco +prospect for Lourdes Gurriel. Feasable?
Steve Adams
1:59
I'd rather have Carrasco than Gurriel

Does it seem likely that the Marlins will be able to acquire a bat like Triston Casas? What could other possible packages for one of their SP look like?
Steve Adams
2:02
Marlins and Red Sox fans are ultra-fixated on Casas based on one report that the Marlins asked about him.

The Marlins have basically all of the top candidates on the trade market... I doubt there's more than a handful of names inside the game's top 30, 40, 50 prospects that they've not at least asked about when gauging interest in their arms.

Casas isn't unique in that he's the specific name they're focused on acquiring; he's just one person who some good reporters heard about when looking into the Marlins' trade possibilities.
