Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 1/15/19

That'd be Twins chief baseball officer Derek Falvey, and as I've said continually, they should be. Zero dollars on the books beyond '19. AL Central is weak. Move Sano to 1B, push Cron to the Tyler Austin bench bat role / safety net at 1B/DH. It's an easy fit. Plus, do they really want a division rival to sign him for way less than most expected him to command at the outset of free agency?

Why would Sonny Grey in Tampa be awkward? Share baseball gossip!
Steve Adams
3:37
Question was in reference to Gray reporting to Yankees spring training in Tampa
So, yeah ... a little awkward to report with the team you know spent all winter trying to trade you, but I'm sure he'd handle it professionally. Doesn't strike me as a Jimmy Butler type, ha.

What's Adam Jones got left in the tank? Would he make sense for Dodgers as a fourth outfielder/RH pinch hitter off the bench?
Steve Adams
3:40
He made clear that his two priorities would be to play for a winning team that had a regular role for him. Dodgers check one of those boxes (contending), but I don't think Jones will be eager to sign on anywhere as a fourth OF. Really, he could sign anywhere that gives him regular ABs and know that on a one-year deal, he'll probably be flipped to a contender that summer if the team is out of it anyway.

I like the Indians as a fit for him. Would make sense for the Braves or ChiSox as well (though I'm not sold on the currently constructed iteration of the White Sox as contenders)

I get that most of us here are big baseball fans, but can people please end this tired trope of asking questions as GMs who not everyone here would know by name/team?
Steve Adams
3:42
I've started explaining who said GM/president/manager/owner is my answer when that happens. I don't really care what people make their names here so long as it's not profane or offensive. And if they do that, I just mute their questions on the back end of the software, so they keep asking but I never see them, ha.

Orioles going to play in free agency at all?
Steve Adams
3:43
Probably scoop up some bargain infield/rotation/bullpen help once guys start taking one-year deals worth under 5MM, but they're not going to add anyone on a decent-sized contract or a multi-year deal

Any chance that the tribe is in on Pollack, or is he too far out of their price range?
Steve Adams
3:44
Too far out of their price range

3:44
If the Phillies sign Machado, does that leave the Nationals as the only team willing to pay Harper
Steve Adams
3:45
Nah, White Sox would probably ramp up their interest, then, and I don't believe that in the end, Boras will only be able to find two teams willing to bid for Bryce. He make sense too many places

3:45
Speaking of Adam Jones.  Anyway the Reds sign him as a CF option since they've clearly got a whole there?
Steve Adams
3:46
Jones is corner OF at this point. The defensive drop-off from Hamilton in CF to Jones would be one of the most precipitous in history, I'd imagine.

With Kyler Murry opting for NFL, does that effect the MLB draft order? Will it push Sf from 10th to 11th? If they were to sign Pollack would they have to surrender a draft pick now?
Steve Adams
3:49
There's no comp pick for the A's if Murray goes to the NFL.

The Giants have to surrender a pick to sign Pollock or any qualified free agent, and the Top 10 is irrelevant. You're thinking of the old rules. Here's an explanation of what the Giants (and each other team) would have to give up to sign a qualified free agent:

Shouldn't all contracts be on a one-year basis?
Steve Adams
3:50
The number of people who side with billionaire owners over the guys actually playing the game and entertaining us never ceases to weird me out.

No, I don't think that they should all be one-year deals.

If I'm still a Marlin come spring training, I should sit until I'm traded, right?
Steve Adams
3:51
I don't see how whining and pouting is going to make other teams anxious to add him.
Show up, be a professional, and know you'll eventually be moved. It'd be a slap in the face to his teammates anyway.

Why not Reddick to Braves for  Teheran?  Both have needs and salary is about the same. Thoughts?
Steve Adams
3:53
I doubt the Astros really want Julio Teheran. He's not that good.
Les Gomez
3:54
Would Dee Gordon be a good target for the Mets?
Steve Adams
3:54
Seems like they already have plenty of infield talent

3:54
Surprised Ottavino is still out there?
Steve Adams
3:55
A little bit, given how many teams were on him. Maybe he's just waiting for Kimbrel to sign, or maybe they simply can't get a team to push to the third year and are still working to make that happen.
Dick Williams
3:55
Is Kuechel worth a four year deal?
Steve Adams
3:56
Dick Williams = Reds president of baseball ops

I think he'd be a fine value at four years and 15-20 per year, but the Reds probably won't spend that, and Keuchel wants than that, it seems.

Panik getting traded to Brewers soon?
Steve Adams
3:56
I don't know that Panik is a demonstrably better option than any of the numerous second base options they could sign in free agency.
AngelsinTheTroutfield
3:57
Cody Allen on a 1yr deal?
Steve Adams
3:57
Still think there's a chance for Allen to get two. But Angels make sense as a fit, and hey, maybe he's rather take one year at this point and try to build some stock back up

Over/Under Alex Reyes (STL) throws 120 innings?
Steve Adams
4:00
He's literally never reached 120 innings in any season of his career -- Major or minors.

Kluber to Braves / Camargo to Padres / Renfroe to Indians. Is this a rough draft for a successful three team trade?
Steve Adams
4:02
Renfroe is in no way anywhere close to a good enough return for Kluber. He wouldn't even be the top piece in a package for Kluber -- maybe not even the second piece. Corner OFs with OBP struggles are easier than ever to come by right now
