Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 1/24/23

Steve Adams

They've also signed Kenley Jansen, Chris Martin, Masataka Yoshida, Adam Duvall, Joely Rodriguez, Justin Turner and Corey Kluber this winter (in addition to acquiring Mondesi)
2:05
They weren't far over the tax in the first place -- which is its own silly mistake and a whole separate discussion -- and those mid-range salaries pile up quick.
Eduardo Rodriguez
2:06
Given the FA pitching market, am I now a decent trade asset?
Steve Adams
2:06
Not with the opt-out next winter, no.
2:07
He either pitches well and is gone in a year's time or is hurt/pitches poorly and the new team's stuck with him. Acquiring E-Rod (or any player with a notable opt-out) is teeming with downside.

Is Kendall Graveman capable of holding down the closer's job in the absence of Hendriks?
Steve Adams
2:07
He's a really good reliever, yeah
Wacha
2:07
Where do you think I sign?
Steve Adams
2:08
Orioles once your asking price drops into their comfort level or with some team who loses a SP early in camp? I have to think Wacha went out looking for far more than teams thought he was worth. I'm not a huge fan; beyond his ERA, the overall profile just isn't super appealing

What would it take to get Houser and Hiurra from MIL? I feel like the sinker-baller would make sense for us and Coors might help resurrect Hiurra's potential some.
Steve Adams
2:10
I don't have much faith that Hiura's ever going to hit. His mechanics are all over the place, he's never consistently made contact, and he isn't a viable defender basically anywhere.

Houser can probably be had for some optionable pitching help, a la the Renfroe deal. (Not the exact same iteration, just pointing to those Janson Junk types of assets)

I think Houser would be a decent pickup for the Rox, but really, any decent starter would be. That staff is ugly and, as always, lacking in depth because pitchers don't want to sign there.
Gary Ward
2:11
Do you think that Nolan Jones will be starting OF in Colorado?
Steve Adams
2:12
He'll get a chance. I don't see any reason to think he's incapable of pushing Grichuk to a bench role, but I'm not a huge Grichuk fan. Even dating back to when Toronto extended him, I was just perplexed.
Cubs

Do you think Madrigal gets much playing time at third this year?
Steve Adams
2:13
I don't think he has the arm for it.,
Orioles Hype Train

Should Os Fans be disappointed with the offseason?
Steve Adams
2:13
If I were an Orioles fan, I would be.
2:15
They swapped out Lyles for an older and arguably worse starter, and the remaining additions are marginal. I think Frazier's a fine one-year dice roll, but Givens doesn't do much for me.

I didn't ever think they'd storm out and sign Correa or something, but this pretty arguably isn't any better than the 2022 version. Yes, a lot of the improvements were always going to come from within (full seasons of Adley, Henderson, etc. -- a hopeful summer return from Means), but there were still so many opportunities to supplement the club and raise the floor.

Alright I've got to wrap up for the week. Thanks, as always, for chatting -- and sorry for all the questions I can't get to in these. I'm on Twitter @Adams_Steve if you're so inclined and always happy to take more questions there.
