Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 1/26/21
powered byJotCast
Steve Adams
2:02
J.T. Realmuto is a Phillie (Philly?) again -- happy Tuesday, Phils fans. That and plenty of other things to chat about for the next hour.
2:03
Also sounds like Jotcast has been working on some things over the past few weeks but has gotten a good bit of the work done, so hopefully that eliminates the crashes we've had late in our last couple chats.
2:04
I also opted not to embed the frame in the post this time, as I think that'll help to keep from artificially inflating the number of participants (previously, anyone on the homepage of MLBTR could view) ... hoping that all leads to a smoother experience here!

Do I actually sign a shortstop?
Steve Adams
2:05
I do think they'll sign a shortstop, but I'm not 100% convinced it's not something weak like re-signing Galvis.
(That'd be the Reds, btw, where Nick Krall is GM)

1 year $12M for Paxton, too much?
Steve Adams
2:06
Seems reasonable enough in a world where Kluber and Smyly got $11MM apiece and Richards gets $10MM for a year. I think Darren Wolfson reported on his Twins podcast last week that Paxton was looking in that range.

Obviously a pretty risky sign given the velo dip, the forearm strain AND the back surgery in 2020, but if he looks good in bullpen sessions, he's among the highest-upside arms on the market.

What’s next for the pirates?
Steve Adams

Wouldn't rule out trading away any of Brault, Kuhl, Rodriguez, Stratton, Stallings or Frazier.
FA Market
2:07
With JT signed do we see the market start to really move
Steve Adams
2:07
I'd say the market already has been moving pretty steadily for the past week to 10 days.

With Realmuto off of the board what catchers could be available in trades for teams that still need one?
Steve Adams
2:09
Willson Contreras, Jacob Stallings, either of Roberto Perez or Austin Hedges in Cleveland, maybe Pedro Severino. Jays have a lot of young catchers they could peddle, too. Free-agent market still has Yadi.

What are the chances of the red sox signing Ozuna?
Steve Adams
2:10
Extremely minimal? I know they've thrown around a little bit of cash recently, but it's all been on short-term deals at half (or less) the annual rate Ozuna will be seeking.

No DH in 2021 is really bad news for the Mets, no? I can't think of any team that would benefit more from the universal DH.
Steve Adams
2:11
Any team that has some money and would want to sign Nelson Cruz or Marcell Ozuna? But yeah, the Mets obviously could really use it with Smith and Alonso both there.

Could the Jays trade for Bryant as well as lock him up to an extension?
Steve Adams
2:12
As a Boras client whose stock is currently at an all-time low, I'm sure Bryant isn't looking to sign an extension right now.

The Rockies seem allergic to doing ANYTHING. What is the number one move you think they should make this offseason?
Steve Adams
2:14
Tear the entire roster down to the studs because it's a top-heavy collection of big leaguers with no real help on the farm system. I loathe rebuilds, but the Rockies aren't in position to do much else. Trade Story, Marquez, Freeland, Bard, Oberg -- Arenado if you somehow can. They need a reset.

If you're giving me literally one move -- trade Story. The Rockies aren't going near the Dodgers or Padres this year, and Story is a free agent next year who they probably won't sign long-term because of their bloated payroll and public declaration of a lack of financial flexibility.

$23.1M  is greater than $23M. Congrats to Realmuto for setting a new AAV bar for catchers, even if only by a little.
Steve Adams
2:15
Right. It's largely symbolic but it surely has meaning for him. And hey, first catcher to break $100MM in free agency, too. I'm sure they were hoping for more; the Mets' early pivot to McCann really hurt JTR's market.

Should Oriole fans be concerned about the Orioles asking Santander & Mancini to defer their one year salary?  Am I reading into it too much, to assume that the team might be in a uniquely bad financial situation?
Steve Adams
2:20
I was pretty stunned to see The Athletic report that the O's tried that. I texted a couple agents that story and was basically met with "are you f'ing kidding me?" replies. It does not speak well of the org or of the chances for the team spending anytime in the near future. Then again, you probably didn't need more hints that the O's weren't going to spend jack after they traded Jose Iglesias' $3.5MM salary and non-tendered several cheap, playable options in December

I may as well ask........Adell get traded?
Steve Adams
2:21
Nah, I don't think the Angels would sell low on him. It's certainly possible he's part of a package for a sizable rotation upgrade, granted, but I ultimately think he'll get more opportunities with the Halos.

Love, love, love Brett Gardner but at this stage isn’t Eddie Rosario a better fit if the Yankees want to add a LH Outfield bat (which they really do need). He has more pop and is only 29. Maybe get him on a one year deal for some of the Otto $$$?
Steve Adams
2:22
Gardner will be cheaper, works counts much more effectively and even at 37 is probably a better option in center field than Rosario.

2:23
Seriously, what's going on with the Mets and Bauer?
Steve Adams
2:23
They made him an offer that he has not accepted as he continues to talk with other teams.

Should mets trade for correa and have lindor at ss and carlos at 3b?
Steve Adams
2:24
The Astros would have to want to trade Correa, which I doubt they do. Bryant would be a more realistic 3B target if they wanted to go that route.

Who is hurt by delayed Arizona spring training?  Will unsigned free agents try to set up an independent site to train?
Steve Adams
2:25
The Cactus League informed MLB it wants to delay the start of Spring Training. There's been no indication that will actually happen.

Is Jed Hoyer alive, will the Cubs do anything to help team in 2021?
Steve Adams
2:27
It's been abundantly clear all winter that the Cubs are going to have a worse team on Opening Day than they had when they finished the 2020 season. I wouldn't bank on any major additions to the big league roster, but I'd imagine they'll bargain-hunt for some pitching depth late in the winter.
Jojo
2:28
Where do u see Jackie going?
Steve Adams
2:28
I've liked the Astros as a fit for Bradley most this winter. I'm sure the Mets and a few others will keep involved, but the Mets have their eyes on larger pursuits right now and have a crowded outfield as it is
