Cubs Talk

My take is that the Cubs does not sign either Arrieta or Darvish.  Theo will sign Cobb and trade for Samardzija.
Steve Adams
3:19
I don't know where everyone gets the Samardzija thing from, but that's not happening. It seems like Cubs fans are still hanging onto that bogus Shark/Heyward report from earlier this offseason.

They may very well end up with Cobb, but that'd be about the extent of their rotation shopping with Lester, Quintana, Hendricks, Chatwood and Cobb all on board then, plus Montgomery to make some spot starts.

Any way the Jays could trick KC into taking Kendrys back? What would it take?
Steve Adams
3:20
The Royals are actively trying to shed salary (with the exception of their weird fixation on bringing Hosmer back). They're not taking Kendrys

Why would the Orioles move Machado to shortstop and Beckham to 3rd?  It does not seem like that helps the Orioles much what's in it for the Orioles in making this change?
Steve Adams
3:23
Keeping Machado happy for his final season. Plus it's not like Beckham is some world-beating megastar that is now a lock to be a big future piece.

He had a great first month in Baltimore and then completely tanked in September as his K problems got worse than ever.

Beckham has been a huge regression candidate ever since he had that ridiculous August. I feel like there are going to be a ton of false narratives about how the move to 3B and playing an unfamiliar position caused his breakout to evaporate, when it already started disappearing in September.

Could ATL tempt MIA into a trade for Realmuto if they agree to take on Prados contract and give lesser prospects?
Steve Adams
3:23
Nope. If they trade Realmuto, it's going to be talent over cost savings.

Could you see Hosmer and Moustakas re-sign with Kansas City at team friendly contracts
Steve Adams
3:24
The Royals have already offered seven years to Hosmer. There's nothing team-friendly about that.

Your prediction on Teoscar Hernandez?  Will he get 550+ at bats and hit 30+ HRS?
Steve Adams
3:27
Not after they traded for Grichuk and signed Granderson. I do think he'll work his way into a fairly regular role by season's end, though. I'm a big fan. His batted-ball profile in September was excellent.

What's the logic behind the Mets DFA'ing Josh Smoker?
Steve Adams
3:28
His command sucks and he's 29? I mean, there are guys I'd have hung onto him over, but I wasn't stunned to see him DFAed or anything.

3:28
Any chance Angels get J Harrison?  What cost?
Steve Adams
3:29
He seems entirely superfluous for that team. Depth is great and all, but paying his $10MM salary and surrendering legitimate prospect talent for him doesn't make much sense for the Halos.

Is Keon Broxton worth anything in a trade?  Strikeouts are a huge problem, but he's a 20/20 CF who has at times played defense at an elite level.
Steve Adams
3:32
Think the jury is pretty mixed on his defense -- metrics hated him in 2017 for the most part, though OOA loved him. He has five years of control with speed, power and range -- he has some value but not like farm-system altering value or anything.

He also has an option remaining apparently, so might as well keep him if no one's offering much. Not a "they've gotta trade one of these guys!" situation there.

3:32
Any word on texas rangers and yu darvish?
Steve Adams
3:33
I don't think anyone has portrayed the Rangers as a serious Darvish pursuer for like a month now. They have a payroll range in mind, they don't want to blow past it. They're not going to step up and pay him if he's really getting five-year offers.

Thoughts on the Oak-KC trade last night? Seems like KC got burnt getting only an out of options Jesse Hahn and Heath Fillymer after trading Matt Strahm and intruging infield prospect Estuery Ruiz (I think) in the Buchter deal at the deadline
Steve Adams
3:34
Yeah it doesn't look great in retrospect, but you can't undo the previous trade. Hahn gives them an immediate rotation option, Fillmyer a decent back-end SP prospect, and they still shed some cash and still have Maurer from the Strahm trade, who has time to salvage some value.
3:35
Generally speaking, I really liked the Padres' buy-low move on Strahm though.

3:35
If you were Orioles GM, would you trade Machado now or in July?
Steve Adams
3:36
I'd have traded him, Britton and others last offseason when it was already apparent that they had nowhere near enough pitching to be taken seriously.

Well, I'd have pushed for it anyway. You need ownership on board to do that, though, and it doesn't sound like Peter Angelos has ever been close to being there.

Does stroman get traded at the deadline if we not contenders
Steve Adams
3:38
Would basically be signaling that the Jays are overhauling the current core and waiting for the Vlad Jr. / Bichette generation to reach the Majors. Atkins and Shapiro haven't shown any willingness to do so. I think they'd look more closely at moving short-term pieces like Donaldson, Happ, etc.
Logan Morrison
3:38
WHere will I play at
Steve Adams
3:39
Rockies, Royals, Cardinals -- if his market gets to a certain point, a team without a clearly set DH should just jump in and sign him. If he's there on a mid-range two-year deal and is sitting on a 130 wRC+ over 900+ PAs going back to mid-May 2016, I say just make room for the bat. Twins would make sense in that regard.
3:40
Your daily reminder that prospects are prospects and you should always take even the most respected rankings with a grain of salt:

Brewers designate Andrew Susac to clear room for Matt Albers.
Going to get a headline on that up at MLBTR real quick, one second.
3:43
Also: Rangers sign Jon Niese to minors deal
James Franco
3:43
Cobb a good fit for Colorado? His ground ball % was 50% last year
Steve Adams
3:43
He also had one of the worst swinging-strike rates in all of baseball. I don't love that much contact being made at Coors -- decent GB% or not.

What do you expect from Jason Heyward this year?
Steve Adams
3:43
Good defense and not much else
G Dubya
3:44
Assuming they are competitive all season, how do Twins handle Dozier this year? Offer extension? QO and take the draft pick?
